It was more-or-less random/wordplay. I'm a bit infatuated with... OO, CAKE! I mean, Portal. Yes. "Aperture Science, I'm making a note here..."

"Portal" in any context immediately triggers my need for Portal. *Wreckedcarzz head begins spinning in an endless paradox/Do Until i = 1 Step 2*

Hello, and again, welcome to the Aperture Science Computer-Aided Enrichment Center. We hope your brief detention in the Relaxation Vault has been a pleasant one. Your specimen has been processed, and we are now ready to begin the test proper. Before we start, however, keep in mind that although fun, and learning are the primary goals of all Enrichment Center activities, please refain from ...

Oh, wait, damn. That's Windows only still. I would kill for that on Ubuntu. KILL. DESTROY. TERMINATE!

Oh, nice list, too. Too bad there isn't, CAKE. :'( :P

Lolz.

This thread has gone from epic fail to epic win within 5 posts. So when someone posts a song, 5 replies must be made, then the song won't suck so bad. :P ;D

(That means, when I post, we need like 25 posts to even it out, k? ;D)

Yea. It is just a shell. Nothing else changed.

It works basically the same as explorer (your taskbar, Start Menu, desktop and folder browser that comes with Windows since 95a). If you go to Task Manager and to the Processes tab, and Terminate explorer.exe, it would replace what just "disappeared".

To open explorer back up, go to File > Run from Task Manager, and type "explorer" or "explorer.exe"

Living Room / Re: How to make an external HD SHUT UP?!?!
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on January 26, 2009, 04:13 PM »
Yea, I'll bug my mom for an old washcloth or something if I can't get ahold of any carpet.

Powered USB hub = UPS for USB? Right now I am using EVERY USB port except ONE in the front/top (inconvenient to get to, iPod cable BARELY fits, if that gives you an idea how close this is) along with 2 open on a USB hub (ironically, the USB hub takes a USB port...). I'd rather get a normal UPS first, seeing as I'm still on the "old fashioned" power-strip-only setup.

Scannie sent me an app, revoSleep, that might help, but it has a disclaimer that if your HD dies and/or explodes and/or activates SkyNet, your the sole person responsible. Not really... comforting. (It's something, though)

o_O rubber band idea might work... I don't have any shelves though. The cabinent has 3 levels - bottom, w/ keyboard tray and (removed) writing tray, monitor area (where tower/monitor/speakers/external HD is), and an upper level where I toss all my random stuff. I might find a way to pull it off (hooks attached to bottom of top level?). Dunno yet.

It was originally on my carpet floor, but I don't have a patch of carpet available. We had carpet samples, but my mom threw them out recently (I'm looking around the house with my dad for any unused carpet, we have 2 large 3'x3' sections, but that's a bit too large for 2"x6"). That's a good idea though, and one that I didn't think of (I moved it off of carpet, but didn't think to use carpet again).

We don't have any gelatin-like stuff, though, so that's out.

Things to try: Carpet section, hooks+rubber bands.

No fan - it is your basic HD within an enclosure (one large unit, warranty void if opened, bla bla). No cooling other than passive (holes @ bottom). :-\

It is sitting fine on the wood surface that is my cabinet, and no matter whether it is vertical or horizontal (designed for either) it makes the SAME noise. :'(

Also, unplugging it would be a somewhat viable suggestion, but I need about 3" more width (desk space, that is) than I have now, so I would have to move my speakers, rotate my monitor, turn the HD around, unplug, and reverse (minus the plugging back in) to get back to work/play on the computer. (I'm continuing to complain @ parents for a real desk)

Living Room / How to make an external HD SHUT UP?!?!

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

That's the sound my external HD is making. No, there is no damage to the drive - I love the thing, its in perfect condition (although a bit fragmented I assume). I recently moved my computer BACK from it's makeshift desk area (aka the tower of dead computers/cases with my PC on top) into my computer cabinet, once again, spewing hot air back at me (its winter, so it works). But I also have a new external HD that I use for backups - and the cable is about 18" long (1/2 meter?). Too short to stay in it's current position. So, logically, I moved it behind my monitor, inside of the cabinet. Out of sight, out of mind, into ear, teen-programmer-goes-axe-murderer.

I don't know WHY it's making such an annoying noise - my dad's WD "MyBook" 500GB drive doesn't, but this is a Maxtor 250GB One Touch III - and I don't really care why; but I *really* need suggestions on how to make this thing ST*U before I go nuts. I have used HD quieting cases before for internal drives, but I'm looking for something (preferably free, but anything at all is more than welcome) that will quiet this thing down (unplugging/bashing into wall excluded). :wallbash:

Thoughts? Anything?

Last second thought: It *just* (I mean literally as I went to hit "Post") turned itself off due to idling - is there a software that'll do that as SOON as read/write to the drive has "ended"? That might do it...

I got a Lexar 16GB flash drive that is now 60% full (10GB, and I've yet to put COD4 onto it (for those out-of-the-way LAN games :D)). I would love to get a 32GB next year :)

OMG, I forgot how to attach external images... ugh. I'm an idiot.

EDIT: ironically, my flash drive is at the same "used level" as the image.

Edit 2: Oh yea, my iPod Nano 5th Generation (8GB) isn't bad, either. Flash drive still takes the cake, though.

LaunchBar Commander / [Bug] LBC bad uninstall info
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on January 24, 2009, 03:06 PM »
Found this while going through eliminating old apps - I've noticed this a few times, but never brought it up

LBC calls itself "MenuCommander" in the Add/Remove (or Programs and Features for us Vista users) menu. Not huge, but just thought I'd point it out.

General Software Discussion / The Worst Downloads of 2008 (CNET)

Download.com comes up with some very... whats the word... bizarrely interesting (that seems to fit) software from '08. Check it out here.

Summary:

  • SKAT - Rat card playing game
  • MB Free Psychic Color Test
  • Alien Communicator
  • Psychiatric Diagnosis Suite
  • Automatic Print Email

In the little snippet about "Automatic Print Email", GreenPrint is mentioned - I use this program on ALL my computers, and absolutely love it (I'm not related to GreenPrint in any way other than an end user).

Nowadays free good quality programs start to overtake the market. My favorite one is Skype call recorder

This thread *is* over 2 years old - you might have gotten a better, more updated version.

Also, now Skype can record conversations on its own I believe (scannie was driving me nuts doing this)

Not really. Pamela Pro for Skype.

O_o my end told me about it? Whatever, I'm a Skype noob :P

And I promise to do my best to pull all the documentation together and create a PDF user manual by the time I "get" it all.  :)

Send me a copy of that PDF, will ya? Except for opening stuff and going through directories, I don't use (lack of knowledge) any of FARR's other features.

:o I was looking to grab a couple (smaller) Seagate Barracuda drives over the summer to bring my old PC back to life, but it looks like I'll keep the PC 100% WD (and offline, but offline is better than bricked) - I'm on a Seagate drive now and love it (not affected), but I don't want to risk anything.

EDIT: OMG! I HAVE LEET POSTS!

I call these donate-software a kind of neo-shareware.  >:( People have to 'donate' to get a certain function, people have to 'donate' to get the first preview, blah blah blah. How's that different from a shareware? Sign.

Yea, that's kind of the idea. I wouldn't mind paying for it if it was shareware, I like the idea and what I'm seeing/reading, but it is kind of pushing it to a limit.

That would be like mouser making a FARR v3 and those that hadn't donated to DC couldn't download it for X amount of time (taking Cario's development timespan, it looks like about 18 months?). Isn't that a little... too far? Why advertise so early?

But whatever, I'm not pointing fingers.
