dr.dobbs journal is a very very good programmers journal, so if you are a programmer, you want this.

When I upload using ftp it uses permisions 755 (owner rwx and group/other are +rx) by default, which is fine for all folders except the attachments and uploads folders, which need to be world writable.

you can drag resulting files off of farr window into other apps..
and you can drag folders into farr search window to search in those folders.

i dont think you can drag files onto farr window - but now that i think of this, it should be added shouldnt it, so you can find an exe, and then drag a desktop file/folder onto that found executable.. adding to todo list.

Oh wow..
These are the very 2 items that I found deficient in UE (UE macro editing was better than many, but still a real pain) -- it's quite good news to hear they've improved that.

(version 13.. hmm are they aiming for largest version number award?)

I understand completely.  I'll put it on my todo list - the autohide stuff really needs improvement as has been noted in other threads.

Due to order of the Dutch government in cooperation with George Bush and European Union, all angry Dutch text must be encrypted and obfuscated.  Sorry that I cannot elaborate but I am under a top secret hush order and have said too much already.

[as f0dder said, it looks like a unicode bug, i'll put it on my todo list to take a look at and see why it might be happening].

Thank you for reminding me about this - things have been crazy at my house this last 2 weeks but Ive got this coming weekend to catch up and Screenshot Captor definitely needs a new release; I hope some of you suffering from this will be around to help me test the fix.  I promise I will attend to this before next week.

Let me give some guidelines on how i upgrade smf, since it's a bit unusual and it may help others.  And in the process i'll answer gri's questions.

First:
I keep two copies of the forum software in different places.  One is the real one we use here, and another is basically a copy of this one, that i always upgrade and test first on.  I do this because I have modified so many files that there is always something i forget.  Having the test installation lets me safely experiment first.

Second:
I always unpack the smf (and all web scripts i install) locally on my pc, where i keep a mirror image of the server account.  Then I use Beyond Compare to compare the new and old version (on my pc and moved to like smf_OLD), and see what has changed.  This is also when i merge any of my modifications into the new upgraded smf files.

Third:
After I've unpacked all the files and merged all of my changes, I ftp into the TEST server, and upload all files (or all new files).  Then i test my test forum, make sure all works well - if not i modify the files locally and reupload.

Fourth:
After I know all the files work well on the test server, i ftp into the real server and upload the new files.

So to answer gri's question about how do i set permissions and create directories - for smf installation i do it all from the FTP client.  (i've been trying SecureFX recently but any one will do).  Certain directories like the attachments directory need to be made writable by all (right click on the folder and chmod to +777 or +w for all.  I think smf will alert you if you haven't dont this properly.

You do not need anything special as far as a control panel or special database access - it can all be done through a normal ftp client.

Sorry guys, I've been building a massive wall-to-wall bookcase and moving at the same time, and it's sapping alllllllll my time this last two weeks.  Good news is that things will be back to pretty much normal at the end of this week

Allen (respected DC member here) also swears by TextPad, and i'be been waiting for it myself for a long time, hoping for the inline spelling error highlighting that i'm so sorely missing in UltraEdit, so i'll be giving it a very close look.

better for sure.  But when you go up or down it shouldnt affect your horizontal movement, and also each tap should give a little acceleration, so that you can speed up movement or slow it down.  Find yourself a nice web page on this stuff!!

i think i see what you mean.. i am not an eggdrop or tcl expert, so it's a miracle i ever got the eggdrop bind interception to work at all (i had help). maybe someone out there can add code to deal with these unusual special argument cases?

I tell you i think this has real potential.. once you fix the gravity and friction!!
i think it should feel like you are nudging a bouncing ball, which wants to fall and bounce on it's own due to gravity (at least this is my view of how it should feel).  It's not hard to do, you just need to find a little article on the web on controlling a character or ship with gravity, velocity, acceleration, friction.  It might sound scary but it's fun to code.

I'll be adding a full set of links you can use to go to any control panel applet or any of the special locations like "My Computer" etc, in an upcoming version this month.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Avafind mini review
« Last post by mouser on March 04, 2007, 07:06 AM »
Really nice work, and great to see all those pictures, thanks for posting this!

Suggestions for improvement:
There is a mini-review template available when you make a post (see the drop down box that says "Add Preset Text..")
This template shows what info should be in a mini review up front (ie webpage, price, etc).

Also, a big thing is that it's much better to ATTACH images to posts instead of linking to offsite images, since those offsite images are likely to dissapear eventually or else make the owner unhappy about us stealing bandwidth.

if the native resolution of monitor is 1440x900 i think i would buy a new graphics card that supported that resolution.

avafind looks nice - i'll have to study it for farr ideas..

Thanks for the report, sounds like i have to do some Vista compatible improvements. I think i can solve these easily by just using the Documents and Settings location for config file by default instead of application directory, which i do now, which is what is presumably causing the issues.
