Living Room / Re: Choosing a keyboard and a mouse
« Last post by mouser on March 15, 2007, 08:10 AM »
I think choosing a particular keyboard/mouse is kind of like choosing a programming language.  Depends on the individual.

Quite true -- best thing you could do is go to a local store and try some out.

Just some brief observations:

1) I didn't think i would need a wireless mouse -- now i wouldn't go back to a wired one, the wire does become annoying and an obstacle.  Only downside is need to change or recharge batteries.  Read reviews to make sure you don't end up with a mouse needing an inconvenient recharge every 10 minutes.  I had a rechargable one once that had to be put in its "base" to recharge, which i just could not ever remember to do.  Never had any trouble with reception of my wireless mice.

2) Wireless keyboard - can't see the use for this if you dont work from bed/couch/etc and constantly move keyboard.  However, given quality of wireless mouse transmission i can't see any reason why the wireless keyboards would have any noticable defficiencies over wired versions.

3) i've had bad experience mixing microsoft and logitech mice recently, and so i would probably go with either both MS keyboard+mouse or both logitech keyboard and mouse.  Ive used mice and keyboards from both companies and been very happy.

4) i'm currently using the MS ergonomic 4000 keyboard and have grown very fond of it, even though i never expected to like one of the ergonomic types.  Be warned though that it may be hard to switch back and forth between ergonomic and non-ergonomic keyboards if you use one type at work and another at home, etc.

5) in short my summary recommendation: buy a Microsoft or Logitech bundle which includes a wireless mouse and a wired or wireless keyboard depending on your preference.

While reading this thread on DC forum about file encryption, I came across this blog entry from last week by the author of the well-know open source encryption tool AxCrypt.

It seems that he has just released an alpha preview version of a complete rewrite of his encryption software (AxCrypt2Go):

http://www.axantum.c...Crypt/Blog/Blog.html (see also http://www.axantum.c...t/Architecture2.html)

News 2006-02-26! There is now an alpha-version, or community preview, of AxCrypt2Go available. This is the next generation of AxCrypt - completely rewritten, faster and it runs without installation, from a USB-driver or any other media. Download  (Win 2K/XP only!) now, and give us your feedback!
..
..the following are now the primary design goals of AxCrypt 2.x:
    * Security within the bounds of a user mode program.
    * Ease of use.
    * Install-free AxCrypt2Go version as well as the traditional AxCrypt shell extension.
    * Full cross platform portability for non-interactive and command line components.
    * More robust and less complex installer.
    * International user interface support.
    * Compatibility with AxCrypt 1.x
    * 256-bit encryption.
    * Open Source.

General Software Discussion / Re: Tools for Password Protecting Files?
« Last post by mouser on March 15, 2007, 07:28 AM »
AxCrypt seems like it takes the traditional route of decrypt->modify->reencrypt, which is pretty useless as it leaves plaintext residue on your disk.

Just my 2 cents:
I have always had the feeling that AxCrypt was a quality piece of software (open source too), made by someone who knows what they are doing.  The issue about leaving plaintext "residue" on your hard drive is really only of importance to a small subset of the people encrypting files (those who need to be absolutely certain that there is no trace of the original file left on their original pc).  I'm starting a new post about his new version 2 which he recently announced was open to testers.

The latest verion (1.03.01) seems to be working fine here and doing it's magic as expected.

I went and checked out Traditional-Chinese, the problem with implementing it is that while there is an option to translate English to simplified Chinese, there is no option to go backward back into English, so boomerang can't use it.

However I will try to finally make the start and end languages configurable and in this case you could use it as your end language.

binary, perhaps you could resize that signature image a little bit  ;D
You aren't the only one with a giant signature but I suggest we try to keep sigs down to under 400 or 480 width and under 80 or 120 height (personally i prefer smaller but i know not everyone agrees).

Yes, i'm afraid so, if you remove an image from the middle youll have to renumber.
(alternative is to remove all and re-add all in proper order).

I'm sure you're not the only one wanting to know what the current state of anonymous surfing is.. I look forward to a reply from some of the people here who know something about this and the current software to support it.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Screenshot Captor License Key Saved
« Last post by mouser on March 14, 2007, 07:04 PM »
I've never heard of this bug.. but it surely is a bug -- you should never see that after the first time..
Strange.. can you tell me what operating system you are using?  What version of Screenshot Captor?
When you go in the about box does it say your email, etc?

Email me directly and I can try and help more ([email protected])

I've uploaded a new version to try to fix these issues:
Version 2.00.60 - March 14, 2007 - ALPHA PREVIEW RELEASE
 • Added special +sall modifier which says to show all matches and ignore the normal result limit.
 • Tried to add code to prevent a situation where you type very fast and hit enter before results are updated (may need improving).
 • Fixed bug where folder history items were being displayed inappropriately.
27412
very good guess JennyB.. actually what happened is this -- old code stripped off the \ at the end.
then in order to fix another feature where path completion was sometimes appearing in lowercase, i wrote a function that automatically determined the canonical mixed case path of any given path.  problem is this function gets rid of the \ at the end, so indeed the old code was still stripping off the last character, leading to the behavior seen.

thanks for discovering that, i was having a lot of trouble reproducing it -- you guys are so incredibly helpful  :-*  :Thmbsup: :Thmbsup: :Thmbsup: :Thmbsup:

actually the difference between attachthumb=# and attachthumb=1 is non-existent in this case, as the # version just attaches the images in order, so with only one image there is no difference.

the reason that its not following the link is simply because when you do an attachthumb, a click enlarges the image, so the link is disabled.  i wonder if i should change this behaviot?

nyway, instead of attachthumb use attach, that will solve your problem.

27415
I like it.
Question: Can you still add any files you want to a project? Files from outside the main project directory, etc?
27416
Josh+ecaradec, ok let me see if i can add some code to make sure that it won't launch until it has refiltered and displayed something based on your latest typing. Perhaps i can just have it wait an extra few milliseconds in this case and then launch the result based on what you type.

JennyB, that's quite bizzarre.. does it happen all over in lots of directories??
It even gave the phantom entry a unique date.. STRANGE! I'm having trouble reproducing it..
27417
Could it be possible to not launch the first result if it does not match the query ?

FARR should never be showing results that don't match the query, can you give an example?
You also might try disabling those options that TucknDar posted to change behavior of what happens when you hit enter.
27418
jdmarch and cnewtonne, can you try v 2.00.59 and see if it solves your issues?
27419
getting better but the control is still screwy!!!!
clicking up shouldnt stop your horizontal momentum.
wreckedcarzz you are going to kick yourself when you finallly take the time to go find some article on how to use acceleration and velocity, it's just so simple and natural and it will make a big difference for your game.
27420
cnewtonne the action alias thing is written up on a little card in front of me, i havent forgotten it, it's next.

jdmarch, checking your issues now, i may have turned off the "check full path" option and thought i fixed it.

Alpha Version 2.00.58 is now uploaded to same address as previous alphas.  As always if you need a download link send me a private message via the forum or email.

Mostly bug fixes as you can see from the version history.
27422
the preview part is not important, but yes all images should be put into attachment fields at the bottom of the post new message page, and then put:

inside the body of the post wherever you want the images to go.

right, it's going to install some version of .net so it wants you to uninstall any beta before it does.

I think it might be saying that you need to uninstall any BETA OR TECH PREVIEW releases of .net framework.
I agree that the language is DAMN confusing.

Are you asking for a utility that will encrypt your data filess so other people can't read them?
Or are you asking for a utility that will password protect some executable programs on your pc and require a password before it runs?
