UrlSnooper / Re: Network Adapter Detection Fails
« Last post by mouser on March 22, 2007, 09:15 PM »
Keep automatic network adapter detection turned off and select your card manually.  Does your network card show up in the list?  When you start snooping and then open pages in your web browser, does the status bar of url snooper show that it is scanning packets, or does it just stay at 0 packets scanned?

on vista, url snooper may need to be run with administrative rights.

try right clicking on the url snooper shortcut and selecting the option to let it run as administrator, then restart.

let me know if it works please.

It would be great if you didn't hard code fonts and just used the system fonts
That's the way the program operated until recently -- but i had to modify that to deal with people who had large fonts enabled to handle a problem where the fonts were too big for the dialogs. I guess you also have large fonts enabled on your system?

27356
customizable fonts are on my todo list.

FARR can't find items in when it is in a folder that contain a folder of the same name. If I am in c:\devel and there is a c:\devel\devel\, I won't be able to see and select anything.

i'm having a hard time reproducing this -- it seems to work ok and as expected for me.
27358
funny you should post this -- i have thought for a while about adding such a feature to my ScreenshotCaptor program.. it's not that hard to imagine cases where it might be useful.. the only thing that has really kept me from adding it is the thought that it might be more useful to make a general purpose program for arranging multiple images in such arragements easily via drag+drop..

thank you for this info -- very useful.

Addendum:
The Amtrak train station is an easy 10 min walk to my house.

I've just moved into a new place in champaign-urbana, IL (that's why i haven't been around as much this last month).

Gothic and Della (two DC forum/irc-channel people) are taking a trip to visit this saturday, and on the off chance that there are other people who visit this forum who live in the area or like driving (or taking Amtrak), i thought i would extend the invitation to join us for a late dinner and drinks.  We will be going out not eating at my place, but i'm happy to host anyone who wants to stay overnight (bring your sleeping bag!).

So it will be late dinner and drinks at a downtown champaign restaurant+bar, on saturday night, march 24th.  I'll post more specifics as they become clear but the details may change as the night progresses so you'll have to coordinate with me ahead of time.

We may end up going to the movies sunday afternoon and you are welcome to join us there as well.

Please message me or email me ([email protected]) if you plan on coming - and please do come! it will be fun

ps. It's ok if you are an anti-social person who never posts, this will be just a casual get together, nothing stressfull, and we won't be talking about DC all night long either.  I'm not very social myself so it will be an interesting experience..

edyshor, I think you make some reasonable points.  I also appreciate that you've come up with definitions that are useful (i think you made a good case about why you think it qualifies as "free software" and not "freeware").  Things become a little messy in the real world because most people don't have such a nuanced view of these word meanings.  I do think we should probably make a more determined effort to use the term free software whenever possible, and avoid using the term "freeware" except when forced to choose between labeling our software freeware vs. shareware.  I'd also agree that Donationware is not the ideal term -- the problem is that there is no existing term that perfectly captures what we do, and we have enough trouble explaining the site to not want to add to it by calling our software "PayWhatYouWantIncludingNothingButYouHaveToSignUpAtForumUnlessYouDontMindAnOccassionalReminderOrWriteToUs_WARE"

-standalone

The newer versions, even if not set to start with Windows, leave a System Tray icon running after I once use FARR.  Any way of turning this behavior off?

yes, i think if you put the option -notray in the commandline arguments for your farr shortcut, it should exit for real and not stay in tray (this is a change in the way it used to operate).

I want all launches to behave like I'd right-clicked, and selected "Launch and stay open."

it seems to me that unchecking the option "close window after launch" would be smart to behave as you ask so i will make that so.

To me, the key part of donationware is that whether or not a user chooses to donate, and regardless of the amount, they should have full access to the full program, without imposing any *non-trivial* work or annoyances.

The *non-trivial* part is where things get a bit subjective and fuzzy -- but at least speaking for myself, that's the standard i use, and i do consider what we ask of users who choose not to donate to be trivial.  For this reason i also consider the software to fall under the heading of free software.

Best ScreenCaster / Making screencasting in Linux - short but useful article
« Last post by mouser on March 20, 2007, 08:40 AM »
Many times a simple screencast showing how to do something by using a series of screenshots in sequence in a video can explain what paragraph after paragraph of words cannot. Linux and a few open source applications make the job of creating such screencasts easy.

I want to start a thread about ebay/auction helping software from those who use such tools..  There are some really great ones I know.

Anyone want to volunteer to help me build a nice list with screenshots and info for these tools similar to what tomos did for disc cataloguers: here?
27373
how do you get forums (like this one) to work?
i think wsw comes with dc forum as a built-in sample, you could take a look at it.
27374
maybe tap the spacebar to the beat, and the page starts scrolling at THAT SPEED

cool idea.
there should be some software out there for scrolling text display for people reading off cue cards, etc., for speeches and stuff.

but i love the idea of a simple text editor which would let you:
1) edit text files
2) change font to be as big as you want.
3) set scroll speed and have it scroll the text at that speed with hotkeys for easy adjustment of speeds.
