Official Announcements / Announcement: DonationCoder.com Has Been Sold to Apple
« Last post by mouser on April 01, 2007, 07:36 PM »
Good news!
Yesterday I had a long conversation with Steve Jobs, and he has made an offer to buy DonationCoder.com!

Now some of you may have heard me slagging off Apple and Steve Jobs before, but that was all in the past.  Now that I am part of the Apple family I love them.

Everything you know and love about DonationCoder.com will stay the same, except for a few minor changes:
  • All MS Windows-based versions of our software will be discontinues as of April 4th.
  • All current software will be ported to the Apple iPhone.
  • The official website url will be changing to iDonationCoder.com
  • All about boxes will now show a photo of Stever Jobs with a glowing Halo above his head.
  • Our software will only be available on iTunes and will cost $500 per license.

Many of these things are already embedded in X1 or Copernic. So, *maybe* FARR could be made to send search terms and arguments in X1 and/or Copernic ? Or would it be better to have a more autonomous FARR ?

personally i think this is a very good idea, like plugin for farr that can ask x1/copernic/googledesktop/windowsdesktop to search for stuff and return results to farr window.

Find And Run Robot / Re: slenderFARR - a new skin for FARR

coooooool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May I add this to the set of skins installed by default with FARR ?

Regarding the usability issues.. Perhaps i can make a special exception to turn of this skin while configuring the options.

I see i'm a bit behind in fixing this.. I'll try to get a new version out this weekend -- Hopefully you guys/gals can test it and see if i've solved it (hard for me to test if i can't reproduce the bug).

Developer's Corner / Re: SkyIDE - Latest Release Information

It always amazes me how much SkyIDE develops with each day..
I can't help but think that while there are quite a few powerful c++ IDEs, that there may be other languages for which SkyIDE might be a unique solution..

Thanks for the report enar

I think need to either make it so it don't need admin rights OR have some kind of check that reports on vista that its not running under admin rights and needs to be.  And also try to have the installer set it to run as admin automatically.

As for version:
I think i probably just forgot to update the about box (ask people around here it's something i regularly mess up  :-[ ).  My about box shows i'm running 2.17.01 as well :)

I hope to publish this weekend the API/SDK for FARR Plugins, including a sample or two in C++.
Plugins are just DLLs that implement certain functions, so you should be able to write a DLL in most languages (vb, delphi, c#, etc.).

Any requests for abilities you'd like the plugins to have?

I'd really love to see some more simple sample plugins written using different languages to include as samples as well, to help others.

ps1.
The Plugin system I wrote will basically be used in all of my big programs from now on, including Screenshot Captor, Clipboard Help+Spell, etc., so once you learn the basics you should be all set to write plugins for any of my programs in the future.

ps2.
I'd like to run a little FARR Plugin contest soon after release.. something to consider :)

screenshot captor can try to send pgup, pgdn, etc to try to scroll image when doing an autoscroll autostich capture, you might want to try doing an autoscroll capture of the window with screenshot captor. it probably won't work right, but if it works a little, let me know and i might be able to add a special option for you to tell it to send left, right,up,down cursor keys.

oh so the new gentle mode is different because you dont lose health when you hit the blocks, is that right?
27289
ok ill fix tonight.

i'm not 100% sure why this thread isn't getting more attention.. i think once you get the movement/gravity/acceleration down nicely there is sure to be an audience for this.  i wouldn't worry about program size.  i'm going to hold off voting until i try the next gravity thing or at least get some more info on what this new mode compared to previous mode so i know what im choosing between, because im not sure what you mean by the more fun/easier mode.

NoSquint looks really useful, how about adding a picture to your post and i can blog it.

So i just released the latest version of my FARR plugin FarrFox which allows you to search firefox, ie, opera bookmarks (see here).

Having written code to read bookmarks from ie, ff, opera, i wondered if there was any need for another tool in the universe to work with bookmarks from dif browsers.  Is there need for another tool which can work with browser bookmarks from the different browsers, or do good free tools for this already exist and nothing more is needed.  Any other ideas?
27295
Anyone using this plugin? How do you like it?
27296
If you use the FARR v2 plugin FarrFox, you might like this update.

Screenshot - 7_27_2007 , 2_59_48 AM.png

FarrFox now searches your bookmarks from: FireFox, Opera, and IE-based browsers, all at once.  No configuration should be required.  8)

NOTE: FARR now knows how to install the FarrFox plugin automatically if you run the updater, so there is no need to download and install it manuall unless you want to for some reason.
Manual Download: https://www.donation.../FarrFox/FarrFox.zip
Install Instructions: Just copy the files over existing files in the Plugins/FarrFox subdirectory of FARR.

Usage: Just type 'ff keywords'

Note: the first time you use it after a long period of disuse it will need to rescan all your favorites, which can take some seconds.

Version 1.03.01 - March 29, 2007
  • Advanced options lets you configure which browser bookmarks to search, and whether to include folder paths in titles
  • Different icons are now used for firefox, ie, opera.

ps.
here's the thread about the error when originally encountered in another one of my programs, and how we tracked it down and fixed it: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1024.0

One of my oldest and dearest friends, and someone with more integrity than anyone else i know on the planet, works for google, so I know they can't be all that bad.  But I continue to have deep misgivings about how the biggest company on the web has built a dominant world wide empire based entirely on selling and pushing advertising.

Here's an article about the new google Click-per-action program..  Let's hope the consequences aren't quite as bad as Scott Karp at Publishing 2.0 fears:

Google’s contextual advertising revolution has already transformed the structure of the web, leading to the creation of millions of web pages with no other real purpose than to serve AdSense ads. The content on these pages is purely a vehicle for advertising — the traditional Chinese Wall between editorial and advertising has been obliterated. And it has force many publishers who follow a more traditional editorial path to start poking holes in the wall. Content has always been a marketing vehicle, but never at such a granular, easy-to-manipulate level.

With its CPA program, Google will drive this phenomenon to the next level. With cost-per-click ads, spammers create bogus pages where confused consumers click on ads in an effort to escape. But with CPA ads, clicking is not enough. The game is now to manipulate consumers not only to click, but to take some further action. And I don’t use the word “manipulate” arbitrarily. This is about turning the web into one big pile of junk mail, aimed at getting you to sign up, buy, or commit to something that you hadn’t necessarily wanted.

the FARR alias syntax looks somewhat daunting!
thats not the syntax you use when configuring an alias, just the format for pasting one in that someone else wants to give you.

ok i know that dreaded richedit line insertion error, let me see if i can find where its occuring and have a version for you to test before this weekend.

email me at [email protected] so we can correspond about it.

ps. my memory of the nature of the bug is that it is caused by some semi-faulty dll on the system, but i have an easy workaround if i can find the place in the program triggering it.

ps. since this is a program from the program itself, it seems like its installing fine, just having this error at startup.
