Living Room / Re: PC World lists the top 50 tech products of all time
« Last post by mouser on April 03, 2007, 01:03 PM »
Does anybody else find it odd that the same site would list the Iomega Zip Drive as #23 in their 50 all time best list...and at the same time list it as #15 in their 25 all time worst list?

No site is more guilty of abusing and misusing "top N" lists than PC World.. And they've done so with some success.  I suspect soon PC World will change it's name to "ILL-INFORMED TOP 10 LIST" Magazine.

yep, as cnewtonne says, anyone can have the download link, just click the little "balloon" looking icon under my name and send me a personal message via the forum (or via email at [email protected]).

ps. i apologize to everyone on this forum who may be getting sick of this long drawn out FARR thread about v2 alpha testing.  version 2 is going to go public soon and then this thread will be retired

UrlSnooper / Re: URLsnooper refuses to start!

I'm most interested if the fix described here solves some of the winME/9x issues:
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=7503.0

I will also try to locate an older version of url snooper before some of the localization code was added, to see if that really is the cause of these crashes (or if its a new issue with winpcap).

One thing that should be done by everyone having trouble with autodetecting the network adapter: turn off this function(!).  The autodetection of the network adapter can fail if the firewall blocks url snooper, and it's a totally optional step.  if in doubt, go to advanced mode and then to options and disable autodetection permanently, and just select your adapter manually.

if it's any consolation, url snooper is one of the most popular programs on our site and it's used by tens of thousands of people without error.  I know that doesnt help you few who are getting these errors, i just want to emphasize that this is not the normal experience of people :(  I also know this doesn't help you much but i'll say what you've probably heard before, which is that the move from win9x/ME to XP was a wonderful experience for many of us, and is definitely something worth considering.  Having said that, i am still committed to making url snooper work well again on WinMe/9x.

To confirm, you can use up and down arrow keys to scroll the window vertically?
Is their any key for page down and page up? or just up and down arrows for scrolling a little bit?

I'm not a business person, I don't have the apptitude for it, but my real fear about these things, which is completely absent in paul's article, is the role that having well-positioned contacts/friends plays, and the importance of being chummy with heavily networked people.

It is my sincere fear that if you looked at the startups that "succeed", you might find less of a correlation with the quality of the product, than with the quality of the networked connections the founders have established.  It's a hugely scary idea, and i could be wrong, but it's what keeps me depressed about this business.  :(

Regardless, Paul Graham is one of the best writers about this stuff on the planet, and always worth reading.

Thanks for posting about that 2steps, i forgot to mention those details.

I should also remind people not to contact 2steps directly -- doing so will void your service contract.  Instead please call your local iDonationCoder town representative, who will give you a proper region identification code, which you can then use to determine your support representative, who will be able to direct your support phone call appropriately.

ps. I have been informed by Steve Jobs that the following terms should no longer be used to describe our stuff: donationware, freeware, software, shareware, etc.

From now on please only use the proper term: iWare.

Official Announcements / Announcement: DonationCoder.com Has Been Sold to Apple
« Last post by mouser on April 01, 2007, 07:36 PM »
Good news!
Yesterday I had a long conversation with Steve Jobs, and he has made an offer to buy DonationCoder.com!

Now some of you may have heard me slagging off Apple and Steve Jobs before, but that was all in the past.  Now that I am part of the Apple family I love them.

Everything you know and love about DonationCoder.com will stay the same, except for a few minor changes:
  • All MS Windows-based versions of our software will be discontinues as of April 4th.
  • All current software will be ported to the Apple iPhone.
  • The official website url will be changing to iDonationCoder.com
  • All about boxes will now show a photo of Stever Jobs with a glowing Halo above his head.
  • Our software will only be available on iTunes and will cost $500 per license.

Many of these things are already embedded in X1 or Copernic. So, *maybe* FARR could be made to send search terms and arguments in X1 and/or Copernic ? Or would it be better to have a more autonomous FARR ?

personally i think this is a very good idea, like plugin for farr that can ask x1/copernic/googledesktop/windowsdesktop to search for stuff and return results to farr window.

coooooool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May I add this to the set of skins installed by default with FARR ?

Regarding the usability issues.. Perhaps i can make a special exception to turn of this skin while configuring the options.
