Find And Run Robot / Re: slenderFARR - a new skin for FARR
« Last post by mouser on April 11, 2007, 02:51 PM »
ps.
the newest farr does not use skins on the option dialogs so the problem regarding the skin in the options is not relevant for now.

Manu!

Sorry if i didn't reply to your bug reports before --
My memory is that i tried to reproduce them and couldn't reproduce the problem and was able to navigate to child directories with same name as the parent.

I will reproduce your example again and see what i find.

Request: can you try using the tab key to to auto-complete, or the alt+# key to go into the parent directory; it may be that hitting enter is opening the parent directory wheras the others will change to that directory in farr, which i think is what you want.

Or is the problem that you want farr to show the contents of the child directory c:\test\test even when you just type c:\test.  I have to think about this a little since it's not clear to me that farr really should be showing you the contents inside the child directory in this case (until you complete c:\test\test), BUT it is something i could add if people really think i should.  Anyone have any thoughts?

I guess my question is, is farr getting confused and behaving differently when the child dir is same name as parent, or is it the case that farr behaves just like any other directory but you want it to behave specially?

cnewtonne,
the force on top stuff only takes effect on restarting farr, so make sure you exit and restart after you change that setting.

as far as making farr dissapear if you move focus away, it sounds cool but it might be problematic because sometimes you want to drag and drop files into farr.

did you know that you can type the hotkey again to close farr window (or tap escape twice).
27181
powerandy it's a good idea. keep in mind that FARR should remember your last position and size for the farr window so that once you set it, you should never have to worry about this again.

I'll be working on this for the update coming this month.

heheh, i'm afraid i do this mistake every once in a while regarding version #s.  I'll fix it on the next release.

ps. if you really do need a time traveler's license for DonationCoder software due to the fact that you are an interstellar being with the ability to warp the space-time continuum, you can get one here:

The wonderful comments by Gizmo in his latest newsletter about Process Tamer have convinced me that I need to do another update as a thank you, so I thought I'd start a new thread and collect some of the outstanding feature requests and bug reports so i make sure not to miss them.

ps. Welcome to all Gizmo's Tech Support Alert readers!

Thanks for reminding me to fix this (it's actually been reported in the past but i've only just recently figured out an acceptable solution).

ps.
I've been inspired by Gizmo's newsletter post and plan to release an update of Process Tamer this month in tribute to gizmo so you shouldn't have long to wait.

thank you for the report warbird -- actually it's a new bug, caused by a change i made to the try to tweak the "ontop" settings of the forms.

i will upload a new fix today or tomorrow.

i've uploaded a new version with skinning disabled in the options -- let's see if this fixes the problem.  redownload at same url and just install over previous version (but make sure it's exited from the tray when you install new version).

Living Room / Re: Microsoft is Dead
« Last post by mouser on April 11, 2007, 02:15 AM »
Interesting reply article at http://suniltanna.co...dead-to-paul-graham/

The first thing to understand is who Paul Graham is. He’s a venture capitalist. He invests in tech start-ups. Yes he has a tech/programming background, but today he’s basically about investing in small tech start-ups with the idea that one of them will grow huge and make him a big pile of money to add to the big pile of money that he’s already got. Nothing wrong with that - although you do have to realize that it colors his arguments throughout.
...the real reason that Paul Graham thinks that Microsoft is "dead" is simply because the kind of start-ups that he is involved with, are no longer trying to compete with, nor displace, Microsoft. In other words, he’s saying that his start-ups aren’t going to try to take a chunk out of Microsoft’s $44.2 billion (and growing) annual revenue. Or to put in other words, competing with Microsoft as a business-plan, at least as far as Paul Graham is concerned, is what is really dead.

Joomla has the advantage of a very large userbase, but i never particularly liked the feel of it.  We've had some cms discussions before, and it may be time to have another, so everyone chime in and hopefully we can find someone who has some real experience with these things who can offer an informed opinion (i can only offer infuriated opinions).

i still hold out some hope of using drupal for more powerful custom cms stuff - the use of generic nodes offers some very intriguing possibilities.  but i have a low threshold for frustration and drupal is just beyond frustrating when it comes to even the simplest of things..  my advice: stay far, far, far away from drupal if you are human and want a pleasant experience setting up a standard kind of site, and don't want to invest large amounts of time learning something very alien.  if you have special needs, that's a different matter, and drupal may still be a good choice.

these are some good ideas.. i think most can be added without too much trouble so i'm putting them on my todo list - but it will be at least a month before i get to them only because TFLM has to get in line in back of needed updates to a few other programs of mine.  i hope you can wait until then!

i will try to fix the vista bug this week.

BaboViolent 2: This is a fun one!!

Very similar to Bloodmasters in spirit, though i think it might be a little more "manageable" in terms of the chaotic overload quotient of your brainstem.

It has some fun capture-the-flag games and the servers seem nice and fast.  Comes with a free server too! Someone start up a server and let's get a DC game going!!

BV2 is a top down shooter where you control a "Babo," a red or blue orb that rolls around the screen with one of six weapons attached to it. The intuitive keyboard + mouse interface helps you get into the thick of the action as quick as possible. It's as simple as joining one of the many active servers and hitting 'F'. You are immediately dropped into the action and start tossing grenades and molotov cocktails at anything that moves while firing to stay alive.

I have to say that some of the core Drupal structural organization things, like using generic nodes, is an absolutely wonderful and super cool idea in theory.  And it does let you do some wonderful stuff (like having forum posts also shown under book hierarchies, which is similar to the modifications i wrote for the simplemachines forum that let us create the blog page, etc.).  But god damn is the drupal administration thing confusing..

Not just confusing but totally inexplicable.  You've got this powerful infrastructure, and then absolutely horrible facilities for formatting content and the documentation is atrocious.

ps. it's hard to describe how messed up drupal is in human english words.  if you want to try an experience in sanity-destruction, try to set up a drupal site with a reasonable calendar/event display module which shows which events are scheduled for which days and times.  good luck.

General Software Discussion / Drupal is f*cked
« Last post by mouser on April 10, 2007, 04:48 AM »
Because I made a post a long time ago saying how I liked drupal a lot, i thought it was only responsible that i make another post saying that after trying to do a few things with it, i'm developing a very deep hatred and disgust of it.

I can't help but feel it has some great technical cool aspects but is not suited for humans to use it.  I may change my mind eventually but right now i would warn everyone to stay away from it if they actually intend to use the site they create with it.  I can only assume that the large population of people who like drupal are mentally disturbed in some way..

Thanks for your post JarC.
I'm actually going to be updating Process Tamer in the next couple of weeks and I think I will add code to check this value and report to the user if it's disabled.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Scripting to be added to Screenshot Captor
« Last post by mouser on April 09, 2007, 12:06 PM »
it's not dead at all - i've been working on my plugin system for quite a while now, and FARR (Find and Run Robot) is my first program that has implemented it.  The first 3rd party plugin was in fact written for FARR using it and released by taichimaster (see https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=7998.0).

the same basic plugin engine i wrote for FARR *will* be added to screenshot captor, no doubt about it.

ps. note that for things like ftp'ing, you dont really need a plugin, you can use SC's existing external tool configuration system to do what you are asking for.
