Find And Run Robot / Re: Portable mode?
« Last post by mouser on May 01, 2007, 11:22 AM »
hehehe.
well the new version will fix this, i could build you a copy for testing.
but let me clarify something based on my understanding of vista which might help you understand what i think is happening.

when farr first starts, if the ini doesnt exist yet in VirtualStore, it will read the one in its application directory.  when it saves it, it will try to save it in its application directory.  but vista will intercept this and write it instead to VirtualStore.

thereafter, even if you copy and replace the ini in the application dir, vista will trick the app into using the one in VirtualStore.

basically VirtualStore is alike a secret hidden cache, which makes apps think they can write into the application directory when they really cant.  it can cause EXACTLY the kinds of troubles you are experiencing.

personally this seems to be like a horrible solution on microsoft's part, though i understand the idea.  In my opinion they should have set the permissions to let an app write into its own directory.  that would have made life so much simpler.

--

anyway try this for now:
1. exit farr.
2. delete the virtual store ini.
3. copy your desired ini into application directory.
4. restart farr.
that really should work.

if you restart farr between steps 2 and 3, you trick yourself.

ps. if this still gives you trouble don't worry about it and email me for new vista-aware version ([email protected]).

wait, i think i already incorporated the vista stuff in 2.00.82 , so its using vista user directory :)

sorry for the confusion!

so can you tell me where you WANT to portable usb copy to get its farr ini file from and save to?  is it the case that you are running it on vista and you want it to store its settings in the usb drive application directory where farr lives, instead of to the user settings on c drive?  will vista let an application on the usb drive write to its application directory? if so i can tell you what to do to convince farr to override vista default save location.

youll need to exit far and then copy over the config file and then restart.
btw im just adding code recently to handle vista user access permissions so you may have to delete any FARR ini file in the VirtualStore directory of vista before it will actually see and read the new ini file in the application directory.  (the newer versions will know how to handle this all automatically and should be released soon.)

i used the report page a couple of times -- it says its blocked, then it unblocks. weird.
it's not a big deal at all, there's no point expending energy trying to stop people from bypassing the need to register on the forum -- if they really don't want to, they will find a way and it's no skin off our back.

there is no special option BUT you might want to try version 2, which preserves the %startmenu% type directory patterns and does not save the resolved versions, so its better suited for portability; farr v2 also knows how to support directories that are relative to the farr path.

i'm sending you forum message with farr v2 download link.

ps.
that doesn't explain the phenomena you described, which sounds like basically you copied over your configuration file with your workstation one (the configuration is stored in the program directory in FindAndRunRobot.ini so don't copy over that file from workstation to usb).

General Software Discussion / Re: Microsoft's Silverlight
« Last post by mouser on May 01, 2007, 07:22 AM »
sounds quite nice in that write up:

The biggest part of the announcement today is that Silverlight will now include a mini-CLR (Common Language Runtime) from .NET. What this means is that a subset of the full .NET platform that runs on desktops can be accessed from within the browser. As with the usual .NET runtime, with Silverlight you can code in a number of supported programming languages. At this time the languages supported are C#, Javascript (ECMA 3.0), VB, Python and Ruby. The Python and Ruby interpreters were built by Microsoft and have been released under their shared source license meaning that developers can get access to the code and are able to make contributions to it.

question: does it matter how you launch the url?
ie by double clicking it or by hitting alt+#
does this problem also occur if you launch a URL from normal search in farr not using bookmarks?
26961
rssaphire are you using the latest farr alpha? if you're not sure can you redownload and update and see if it's still happening.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: ExeGo comparison
« Last post by mouser on April 30, 2007, 05:22 PM »
20mb ! hah!
ok try this:
First, back up everything.  make a zip of your folder with your toolbars in it just in case.
(I really want you to backup stuff just in case things go wrong!)

then do tools -> maintenance -> cleanup unused image data
then do tools -> maintenance -> remove all but required icon pairs
then do tools -> maintenance -> cleanup unused image data
then do tools -> maintenance -> remove all but required icon pairs

then either save your toolbars or do file -> save as.
check file sizes.

ps. we might be better off debugging this over email until we get it solved and the report here the findings :)

there is no limit to the number of icons..

when you add the icon does it show up in the left hand tree also?
does it matter what icon you add?

may i ask what version of lbc you are running?

try this:
backup your toolbars (go to Tools Menu -> Maintenance ->backup current files)
THEN do
Tools -> Maintenance -> Evaluate Tree Consistency.
and make sure it doesnt report any errors.

mail me your toolbar file and tell me which icon never shows and ill see if i can reproduce it.

oh that's very interesting, i didn't even know about firefox keywords, but i don't think it should be too hard to add.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Problem with Remote Desktop
« Last post by mouser on April 30, 2007, 08:51 AM »
ouch.

ok for the first problem maybe the solution is to disable the built-in CHS option to start with windows and instead add your own entry for chs to your REAL user startup group, if you know what i mean.  so it wont start up with remote login.

for the second problem, that is really odd.. could you try disabling the option in chs to monitor the clipboard and let's just confirm that that fixes the problem temporarily.. if the problem is that chs and rdclip are getting into an endless loop of notifying each other about changed clipboard contents, i may be able to fix it.. it's possible that both are reseting clipboard contents to a value that is already set which could cause the issue (i'm not sure i have to look into it).

oh yeah i forgot i already added that recent docs to default search paths :)
heheh, ok no need for that then, just the recent programs launched then.

took me a year before i found it myself  :P
26973
this was recently suggested by someone else and i think it's a very good idea to add, perhaps as a plugin.

so in other words, FARR should know about recently launched programs and recently open documents and can either show them on request, or search for them when searching, with higher scores.

if any c++ coder wants to work with me to add this as a built-in function into farr, i'd be very happy to work with them on it -- if you write generic c++ code to grab me a list of recent docs and recently launched files i'd be honored to integrate it into core features of farr.  email me at [email protected].

momonan is correct -- it's a little secret but if you click on either the little page icon in the last post column, OR the blue "new" button in the subject column, you go to the last post you read:

great idea gottadoit - this would be a nice idea for a plugin.
