Living Room / PC World Editor Resigns - Bravo!
« Last post by mouser on May 02, 2007, 10:45 PM »
Sounds like someone with integrity

Award-winning Editor-in-Chief Harry McCracken of PC World resigned Tuesday over disagreements with the magazine's publisher regarding stories critical of advertisers, according to sources.
...
McCracken informed staffers in an afternoon meeting Wednesday that he decided to resign because Colin Crawford, senior vice president, online, at IDG Communications, was pressuring him to avoid stories that were critical of major advertisers.

Wired News reported Wednesday evening that McCracken quit after Crawford killed a draft story titled "Ten Things We Hate About Apple."

Living Room / Best Buy Geek Squad Confession (long and interesting)
« Last post by mouser on May 02, 2007, 05:14 PM »
...
The procedure taken to catch up on the computers was to take any computer currently in line to be fixed, or being dropped off to be fixed, and--if it had a software or operating system issue--wipe it, and reinstall Windows. Then, when the customer was given back his or her computer, an agent would inform them that due to an error, their data was lost. If they protested, the agent would be considerate, but in the end, if need be, point out #10 and their signature beneath it. For those that do not understand "wipe", it refers to completely deleting all data off the hard drive, and re-installing a fresh version of the Windows operating system. One supportive comment given by a manager, after a obligatory chuckle, was, "Oh well, they should have bought a data backup!" I never took part in this strategy, thankfully, as I was forced onto the floor to help people with their purchases after I was caught by a manager informing customers it would be better if they went to the Geek Squad a few towns over until we catch up.
...
Now, the difference between a Geek Squad agent and a hobo with a thumb drive is that the hobo with a thumb drive has the potential to efficiently fix your problem.

very very cool.
i can see only a few possible issues:
1) would be nice if you could solve the inuse issue especially when it needs to shutdown a program before installing new version.
2) checking the last-modified header of url is very very clever.. but i wonder if it means that on each update check the actual exe is requested from the server and "sent" (thus eating bandwidth? or tricking server stats into thinking there was a download?)  maybe you could have it check one file (like a dummy 0 length file) and then download the real one.  developer would have to update dummy file of course when the exe is updated.

Living Room / The Shopping Bags (tv show)
« Last post by mouser on May 02, 2007, 11:20 AM »
I can't believe i'm posting this, but damn it this show has won me over, so please forgive me!

It's sort of a low budget consumer reports show, and they strike just the right tone.
Hosts are smart and non-nonsense too. I'm impressed! (It's also a rare show that a couple could really enjoy together).

Recent shows have compared: cigars, t-shirts, garbage bags, cake mixes, and so on.

Delivering practical consumer information for those who like to shop, award-winning journalists Anna Wallner and Kristina Matisic take their favourite pastime to new levels, putting a wide range of products and services to the test.

The Shopping Bags is the one-stop shop for anyone looking to make educated purchasing decisions in today's marketplace. Whether searching for new electronic equipment, stocking the pantry or wondering which vitamin supplements are best, the show provides inside information to help everyone become a smarter shopper. Fun, fast-paced and entertaining, The Shopping Bags tells viewers what they need to know before they buy.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Configuring user tools
« Last post by mouser on May 02, 2007, 10:24 AM »
great questions -- it's been so long since anyone actually inquired about user tools..

regarding the "macros" -- the basic idea is this.
when invoking a user tool, CHS:
1) creates a temp file with current clip contents; the full path to this file is %infile%.
2) thinks up a name for a temporary output file where it expects the changed clip to be stored; the full path to this is %outfile%.
3) invokes your tool with commandline you specify
4) it then looks in the %outfile% file to grab the new contents.

SO,
basically lets say you wanted to make a perl script to do lots of processing on some text, to clean it up.
you would make your script take 2 parameters, the input file and output file, and then youd pass them on the commandline when you configure your tool via CHS, like so:

myscript.exe "%infile% "%outfile%'

---

ok you asked about commandline input and output; right now its not supported, though you could very easily simply use a .bat file to execute whatever command you want that outputs to commandline and rout it to outfile, which is the easiest way to do it.

--

addendum:
im not sure now whether %infile% and %outfile% have the complete paths in them or whether the complete paths are specified by "%tmpdir%/%infile%" and "%tmpdir%/%outfile%" which now seems more likely looking at the tool properties screen.

---

im happy to talk more over email to help you get things working and i'd appreciate a summary if/when you do get something working right, so i can update the help file with any lessons learned.. i think it's a nice feature in CHS but no one uses it so it's got very little testing.  if there are issues i'm happy to try to improve it for the one user of it (you!). :)

cnewtone, there is no way it should take that long, some bug must be slowing farr down (like when it somehow gets delayed checking for the existence of a network file).  can you email me your FindAndRunRobot.ini file? or actually you might want to wait until i release the next version which completely changes the way aliases are stored before you do.

jdmarch thanks for pointing that out, i will improve it.

Reply from the collectorz representative who i have talked to in the past:

Customers who want a free upgrade because of our former policy, can get one
without problems.  Just contact us using the contact form on our website.
-Syts

So it sounds to me like they will honor the lifetime free upgrades for anyone who bought it before this announcement, but you may have to take the extra step of mailing them and asking for it.  If you have any hassles don't hesitate to point out you are a member of DonationCoder or give them my email, and cite this reply we received.  And of course report to us if for some reason you are refused the free upgrade.

It's not a matter of hiding -- you have to sign up to download an extended or permanent license key, so having a bugmenot login would be a convenient way of bypassing that.  Not a big deal, but we do like to have people sign up and participate.

It might make it more fun to prepare these newsletters if we had more discussion on the threads once posted - people should sound off on which items are must reads, and which items we may have missed, etc. maybe?

There are quite a few ambient sound generators out there -- what's special about this one is that there are almost no parameters to mess with, and instead you load a "set" of sounds, and users can submit new sound sets to the website, which are pretty coool.

Sound Borb is an audio ambience generating system. The generative nature of Sound Borb's audio engine means that once you hit play, the ambience you're listening to will never end. It will never go to the next track. It will never loop. If you want to listen to the ocean, you can listen to the ocean from now until your electricity goes out. Various ambiences are available for download on the download page, and you can also create your own and post them for download here, if you're so inclined.

Parameters are kept to a minimum, so as to make Sound Borb easy to use. Just load an ambience, and start listening. You can adjust the overall volume, the intensity (how much activity is occuring in the sound), and the happiness of the ambience. Or you can set the intensity and happiness parameters to auto, and sit back and listen.

Thanks François  :) :) :)
It's really nice to hear when someone likes one of my programs.. Sometimes with all the support and fixing of issues it's just what i need to stay motivated :)  :-*

gcharron, i'll look into #1 that sounds annoying and i can't think of why it should happen.
as for #2, i removed the option as it became painfully hard to get that display to look right with the edit box at the bottom.. i may try to bring it back eventually if people really want it, but only after i finish the code that let's user customize font for editbox..

ps.
i agree with everyone about getting farr v2 into release candidate and public testing, i just want to make sure i have the fundamental stuff updated so people can create plugins and share aliases without having to worry about painful upgrading.

i've spent the last week completely reworking the way aliases are saved.  they are now saved in multiple xml files, so that it will be super easy for people to create and share and update various alias files, while also maintaining their own custom aliases, and not worrying about them being overwritten, etc.

DC ran discounts on collectorz software in the past.

They seem like very nice people - i'd be surprised if they didn't honor the lifetime upgrade for people who bought their programs when that was the stated policy.  Carol got it exactly right.

If they for some reason decide not to honor it, i think DC would feel some responsibility and we would of course contact them on behalf of all members and let them know this is not ok to do.
26947
ah ok this is a big clue..
i wonder if somehow farr isn't thinking that a drag and drop operation is occurring for some reason.. but then im not sure why i can't reproduce it..
i'll look more into mouse double clicking launch, there may be a clue there since i dont test that very often..

Mircryption / Re: Mircryption/XChat 0.4.0-alpha w/ DH1080 Key Exchange !
« Last post by mouser on May 01, 2007, 05:02 PM »
gjehle,

you may know that i added a cbc mode of key exchange for mircryption mirc, that will create a random cbc mode key instead of an old-style ecb style key, if both users are using mircryption mirc.  when you get a chance it would be great if you can implement this for your key exchange as well.  should require very little work it's just a matter of seeing if the other person returns an acknowledgement that they also support cbc and then prefixing a cbc: to the key set if so.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Portable mode?
« Last post by mouser on May 01, 2007, 12:04 PM »
does this mean that vista wont let the app write to the usb drive? what's the standard way to get around this for portable apps on vista? run in xp compatibility mode?

i mean i can make farr TRY to store ini on the usb drive, but if vista prevents it, what can i do?

or is it the case that vista WILL let farr write to the usb if it wants, but its a bug in farr which is not trying to do so.
