• [Improvement] Tweaked the detection of a simple left-click in region capture mode to avoid spurious case where a single click was interpreted as a drag and release capture in region capture mode.
• [Improvement] Added 'R' shortcut in region capture mode to switch to fixed sized region move mode.
• [Improvement] Added ability to quickly select preset region sizes in region capture mode using your favorite and last sizes, using keys 0-9.
• [New Feature] Auto selection adjustment (under Edit Menu) -- will resize (both and expand and shrink) the current selection region to tightly fit the foreground contents on a solid background.  Great for isolating GUI controls, windows, etc.;  New toolbar menu item for this command, and shortcut key 'a' in editor.

• [BugFix] Pixelation effects grid borders were sometimes off by one pixel.

• [BugFix] Eliminated unnecessary long delay after closing options panel and performing other operations that effected the thumbnail panel (sorting, etc.).

• [BugFix] Ragged/splice effects dialog was not remembering choice of affected edges.
• [Improvement] New option for post-capture pop-up dialog, you can choose whether the main app should stay minimized when you hit enter from the post-capture pop-up dialog if it was already minimized when you triggered the capture, or should always show the main window afterwards (previously the default).

Let me check into this long delay on closing options issue..
I don't think I changed anything so it may be an issue with windows or antivirus.  Can I ask what OS you use and what antivirus program you us?

I have reproduced the problem -- I'm looking into it now..

You can now try the new auto-adjust region (shrink) using the "A" key when in main sc editor, or use new toolbar button;  Also you now have an easier way to select from your MyFavorite region sizes.

Given the rather appalling offerings in the browser market I'm wondering if there is some value in creating a new(?) board, similar to the mini-review board but specifically for browsers (Browser Wars)?

I am of the feeling that there is some "harm" done every time we make a new section, in terms of fractionating the community.   So my preference is always to avoid creating new forum sections.

I'm looking for a shrink-wrapped rectangular selection.

Please try the brand new "auto adjust region" option under the edit mode in the main sc editing window in the new beta and see how it works for you - it does what we are saying, shrink-wraps the current selection.

NOTE: this function is only implemented so far in the sc editor, NOT the region capture mode -- I understand you want it in the region capture mode.
So for you to use it you would just select a rough region when capturing, and then in the main editor do select-all then edit-> auto adjust.
But if it works well for you then I can maybe add it to the region capture mode itself.

My current implementation of AutoAdjust region will actually first "grow" the region and then contract it -- that can make it easier in some rare cases, but I'm thinking it's probably less confusing and more generally useful if it never expands the region and ALWAYS contracts around whatever you have selected...

I have disabled the "grow before shrink" action, as I think it could lead to some confusion.  Ideally I will put back a grow mode in a different place, as it could be useful for selection some regions in some scenarios.

New substanial feature that may be quite useful:

• [New Feature] Auto selection adjustment (under Edit Menu) -- will resize (both and expand and shrink) the current selection region to tightly fit the foreground contents on a solid background.  Great for isolating GUI controls, windows, etc

It's good for helping you select GUI elements -- basically just select a rough area around (or even intruding a bit into it) a screen object on a solid background, and then trigger the region auto adjust and it should conform to the object.
It's still in early stages.

I will soon be adding some options for it and letting it conform to convex objects that are not perfectly square.  But it seems quite useful  Now includes convex cropping.

I'll make a video soon showing how to use this feature.

There are a couple of approaches to handling such files that you don't trust:

1. User a virtual machine to open and test it and work on it
2. Use a 3d party tool to open it instead of using microsoft office (like an online service or a 3rd party office compatible tool)
3. Turn off macros/scripts in excel until you are sure you trust it.

I've installed but not used OpenSCAD yet.  I've noticed that there are quite a few thingiverse items that are "parametric" and made with it -- meaning that you can adjust some parameters to change various aspects of the size and shape.

So far I've been using my 3d printer quite a bit -- but only to print 3d parts for board games that I play.. It's slow and fiddly and prone to messing up, but it absolutely feels like the future.. There can't be much doubt that in 10 years we will all have these machines in our houses.

Magic wand feature would be terrific.

Yeah but one thing I am keen to avoid is I don't want to implement things twice.. SC already has a magic wand selector in the main image editing mode, and I don't want to implement a second one.. It's tricky because this issue has come up before when talking about region select mode -- I use to recommend everyone just always capture full screen and then select and crop from the editor.  But I have realized that region select mode is what people prefer, to select a small region from the start, rather than capture full screen and edit/crop/etc.

But I still need to avoid trying to make selection mode over feature filled to the point where it is competing with normal SC editing mode.  So I'm not sure a full magic wand is called for, but maybe something simple and quick..

You've actually given me an idea as well.. I could add a hotkey feature that auto grows (or shrinks) the region border by detecting uniform background, much in the way a lasso function works..
You would select a region outside the image and it would contract the region walls as long as the background on each side continued to be uniform.  That would let you capture small objects very precisely with little effort.
If it started by EXPANDING the region if borders didn't start out uniform, it could be used both in cases where you initially select a region larger than the object, or in cases where you selected some interior region including the object of interest.

I guess I am a bit confused.. I use the zoom overlay when I want to capture something to exact boundaries..  I use the mouse to get close and then nudge a couple of pixels to get it exact.

Is it that you are basically selecting one corner and then you know you need to go say 16 pixels right and down, and so you want to be able to go +10 and then +1 +1 +1 +1 +1 +1 without having to do much eyeballing?

Can you try the new version and see if the acceleration helps?  I can see why if you had to count out 16 (or 32) clicks exactly then it would be a pain to have to do it using sixteen +1 nudges..

It just seems to me that with the acceleration, zoom panel, and tooltip showing the capture size, it would be pretty efficient to get it approximately right and the tweak one or two pixels to get it exact, rather than counting out.


Related question:  If the issue is getting exact SIZED captures of small things (rather than eyeballing with overlay window, etc), then perhaps you would benefit most from the feature I am about to add that lets you use 1-9 key to adjust capture region size to one of a set of user-configurable "favorite" sizes.  Then you could set sizes of 16x16, 32x32, etc. and easily select them..
