i tried using IDE3 today.  I can't seem to establish a connection.  I've tried all the relevant ip addresses that I could think of, and none of them worked.  Can anyone advise how to use it?
One pc has to be running in server mode, and the other pc's connect to it in client mode, using the IP address of the server machine.

There is some instructions for the previous version here: http://appsapps.info...ide2/info/index.html

And if you click the blue question mark button at the top of the current version, there is some info within the application.

If you are still having problems and can't get it to work, send Martin a private message.

I have also recently asked Martin to put an page related to this version of IDE on his site along with the most recent binary for download, and he agreed to do it when he has the time (don't know when that will be, though). He wants to build a portfolio section on his site showcasing some of his past work, and I told him to make sure he includes this one.

Also, are there other freeware alternatives that can be used to chat with in a private LAN environment?  Something without the need for a server component.  Just lightweight clients.

Without using your own server component, you'd be forced to use a 3rd party provided service over the internet (like Yahoo, Windows Live Messenger, AIM, etc). They would be the ones running the server.

very nice -- i like this idea.  maybe add a link to the thread where the idea originated?

The idea didn't originate entirely from that thread, but I added the link to it and the other info in the description.

NANY 2011 Entry Information

Application Name Crazy URL Thing
Version 0.0
Short Description Semi-Automated Mass Searching Assistant (SAMSA)
Supported OSes Win-all
Web Page (none yet)
Download Link (none yet)
System Requirements
  • a Windows based PC
  • a browser (your choice)
  • a bunch of keywords
  • a desire to do a lot of searches on a lot of stuff, or on a lot of sites.
Version History
  • nothing yet
Author app103

Description
Allows the user to take a list of search terms, select a site, and keep clicking a button to pop open pages in their default browser, one page for each search term.

The idea evolved partly from this thread, and partly from 2 applications I had been working on, one was Stupid URL Thing, a small utility (just for myself) to make retrieving a list of the last 3000 tweets for the top 1000 twitter users faster and easier, and the other, SocBar, was focused on advanced searching of any and all social networking sites.

Features

Planned Features
  • ability to either paste in your keyword list or load from file
  • ability to edit and save keyword lists
  • ability to print keyword lists
  • ability to use user generated category files, containing info on all the sites in that category (such as Category: Social would contain info for the application to launch searches for nothing but social sites, Category: Search Engines would contain nothing but general search engines, etc)

Screenshots
(Subject to change)

Screenshot - 8_10_2010 , 8_01_24 PM.png

Usage
Installation
You can't install it yet.

Using the Application

You could use it with a single keyword and open searches on multiple sites, or with a list and search on a single or multiple sites.

For example: Let's say you wanted to search for the best price on a single item. You'd enter your search keywords in the small box, select Category: Shopping, select the first site you wanted to check, and then click the "Go" button to open a search in your browser for that site. Then switch to the next site and click the "Go" button again.

If you had a whole big list of things you wanted to buy and wanted to search Amazon.com, you'd either paste in your list (or load from file), select Category: Shopping, select amazon.com, and click the button repeatedly to open up individual search pages for each of your keywords on Amazon's site.

The reason why it is semi-automated is because a lot of sites will block you if you perform too many searches in rapid succession, and it might not be practical to open 100's of pages at the same time, if you have a really long list.

Since it would be impossible for me to include every site on the internet that you could possibly want to search, I will include a starter set of category files and instructions for making your own, so you will be able to create, share, and trade category files with other users.

Uninstallation
Since you can't install it yet, you also can't uninstall it.

Known Issues
It's not ready yet.

I came up with another great idea for an app. I still plan on doing something cross-platform if I have enough time, but there is the possibility that might not happen.

I had heard about this before. It was mentioned briefly in an article about the BP oil spill.

Mr. Hoagland has suggested that there are cracks in the ocean floor, and that pressure at the base of the wellhead is approximately 100,000 psi.

Furthermore, geologists believe there are another 4-5 cracks or fissions in the well. Upon using a GPS and Depth finder system, experts have discovered a large gas bubble, 15-20 miles across and tens of feet high, under the ocean floor.

These bubbles are common. Many believe they have caused the sinking of ships and planes in the Bermuda Triangle.

That said, a bubble this large — if able to escape from under the ocean floor through a crack — would cause a gas explosion that Mr. Hoagland likens to Mt. St. Helens... only under water.

The BP well is 50 miles from Louisiana. Its release would send a toxic cloud over populated areas. The explosion would also sink any ships and oil structures in the vicinity and create a tsunami which would head toward Florida at 600 mph.

Now, many people have called Hoagland a fringe thinker and a conspiracy theorist. And they may be right... But that doesn't mean he isn't on to something.

I usually use WinRar for extracting (right click file and extract) and rarely come across anything it can't handle.

I use Winzip for archiving (right click and archive) because the preferred format for distribution on the web is .zip and I don't want to fuss with doing things the more difficult way and actually run an application first and mess with settings to make a .zip.

ProcessTamer / Re: Process Tamer and Process Lasso

I think he is trying to say that Process Tamer is better for a single core, and Process Lasso is better for a multi-core.
That may be what legendcvb is saying, but the Process Lasso website seems to suggest that Process Lasso is especially effective on less powerful computers: "Process Lasso is very useful and effective on even the latest high-end PCs. However, its ProBalance algorithm achieves maximum effect on PCs with relatively little CPU 'power', such as Netbooks, Tablets, and older desktops."

I know what it says, and it could also be said of Process Tamer. But that statement from the Process Lasso website doesn't compare the 2 of them in use. What legendcvb said could still very well be true.

Unfortunately, I can't evaluate either one of them on my older lower CPU power machine and make my own comparison, since neither of them will run on it. (WinME not supported).

Some antivirus software manslaughter. Chinese-made anti-virus software Duba on manslaughter.

I am not sure if he is trying to say that some antivirus software interferes with Process Tamer, or that antivirus software is a killer on the system without Process Tamer.

Process Tamer 在 单核电脑使用很好 Process Lasso 资源占用就不太好。经常有卡死现象。多核心电脑 Process Lasso  就优异一些。

Fried babelfish translation:

Process Tamer well in single-core computing resource usage Process Lasso is not good. Phenomenon often stuck. Process Lasso on multi-core computers of some merit.

I'll tell you what....give me some time and I'll come up with something really nice for you that will do what you want (sort of...semi-automated), and maybe a bit more.

It won't be a firefox extension, though. It will be a stand-alone app that's browser agnostic (use default browser).

And when I say give me time, I really mean that. Might release it as my NANY 2011 project. I plan on making it worth the wait, though. I am going to combine a few of my other project ideas together with the basic concept behind my "stupid URL thing" that I made for my own use.

Very, very early teaser screenshots (consider it just a concept mock-up):

Yeah!  Might as well go bake a loaf of bread, you're not gonna do much else for a while .

Actually, that's when I switch to using AOL search. It's pretty much nothing but Google with a different URL & logo.
2689
Google will block me if I perform several searches in rapid succession, e.g., spelling variants, modifiers, and the like.  It claims that I appear be using an automated search system and then it will block any searches from my IP address for 30-60 minutes.  Seems I've run into similar blockages at other search engines in the past, as well.

That does not bode well for your search  :o.

You must be working really fast! I use Google pretty much constantly on some days, with several searches a minute for sustained periods (as many as 15 in a minute, or one every 4 seconds, in some cases). Not that I doubt it's happened to you, I'm just surprised.

- Oshyan

I have run into this problem with Google, too, and it's very frustrating when it happens.

Free Dock

Because it floats "freely" on the desktop, rather than being stuck on the side of the screen like most other docks
-ArchaicTimeFrog (August 06, 2010, 07:53 PM)

This has my attention

The problem with that name is people will expect to get it for free, or expect it to be open source.

Perhaps Freedom Dock might be better?

Circle Dock / Re: Change of Licensing from Version 2 (Cancelled)
« Last post by app103 on August 05, 2010, 01:29 PM »
if you are the author of code you release under GPL, can you in fact give "permission" to someone to release it as part of a closed source commercial application?

If the code is not 100% yours, you need the permission of every contributor, first.

If the code is 100% yours, you can, without question. You are the copyright holder. GPL is only a license. It does not change the fact you own the rights to that code. It does not take away the original developer's rights. GPL only serves to give rights to the user. You can license it to someone else under any license you want, including multiple licenses.

But, you can't take back what you have already given away, and anyone that has a copy of the code under the GPL license can still use it as long as they comply with the GPL.

I just checked out this guy's other videos and they are bizarre.

My advice to any author is think very carefully before releasing any software with a GPL (or similar) license. If in doubt, don't!

I would also suggest the same for anyone that is considering contributing to or taking over a GPL licensed project.

Um, you'd also have to offer sourcecode for YOUR binary build (aka latest circle dock!)
That's how it works, unfortunately. It was kind of expected, tho.

Not if he stops working on it and removes it from the market.  And also not if he removes all GPL code from any new build of CD that he does.

I just downloaded the latest version. Am I not entitled to the source? It is not posted anywhere on the site.

« Last post by app103 on August 04, 2010, 02:18 AM »
If I distribute GPL'd software for a fee, am I required to also make it available to the public without a charge?

No. However, if someone pays your fee and gets a copy, the GPL gives them the freedom to release it to the public, with or without a fee. For example, someone could pay your fee, and then put her copy on a web site for the general public.

Anyone that doesn't like your new license terms can pay for the commercial version of CD and then subsequently offer it for free (with a copy of the source that you must provide to them when they purchase it) on their own website. Or they could decide to charge money for it, just like you. You can not stop them.

I'd like to license my code under the GPL, but I'd also like to make it clear that it can't be used for military and/or commercial uses. Can I do this?

No, because those two goals contradict each other. The GNU GPL is designed specifically to prevent the addition of further restrictions. GPLv3 allows a very limited set of them, in section 7, but any other added restriction can be removed by the user.

In other words, you can't restrict the free version of CD to only personal use. And I don't think you can limit the number of copies a user is allowed to install.

Does the GPL allow me to require that anyone who receives the software must pay me a fee and/or notify me?

No. In fact, a requirement like that would make the program non-free. If people have to pay when they get a copy of a program, or if they have to notify anyone in particular, then the program is not free. See the definition of free software.

The GPL is a free software license, and therefore it permits people to use and even redistribute the software without being required to pay anyone a fee for doing so.

Anyone that decides to offer your commercial version for free on their website, anyone that downloads it from their site and uses it, does not have to tell you or pay you for the right to use it. And if someone decides to charge for copies (even for your free version), they don't have to share that money with you, nor tell you about it, nor does their users have to pay you anything.

I understand and sympathize with sgtevmckay and Markham, but the GPL is the GPL, and since that was what Eric released his original under, you have to understand and comply with the GPL.

And if you don't like the GPL license, your only alternative is to not contribute to a GPL project.

Markham already made one mistake by adding to a GPL project and releasing his versions under the Microsoft Public License (Ms-PL), which is listed as incompatible with the GPL. That means Markham's license is incompatible with Eric's license, and by all rights, Markham shouldn't have the right to use Eric's GPL'd code in his version of CD.

Please proceed very carefully, or you could put the entire project in jeopardy, and then there will be no more CD for anyone, except for Eric's original version.

The downside could be renting the farm space, but tech-savvy angel investors will appear to alleviate that aspect, methinks.  They show up everywhere else  ;D.

Yes, but most angel investors don't actually want a chunk of a small company that plans to be in it for the long haul. They want a chunk of the cash when it's sold to a big corporation, which they will push to make happen.

Nobody wants to risk their money and time investing in what could be the next Google, when it's easier to make the company sell to Google and they get a big cut.

I had a laptop, a WinBook, that I bought in 2000 ... it died earlier this year.  For nine (9) years, it has been powered up around the clock, used as a desktop machine.  Shortly after I bought it, I hot-glued four (4) plastic bottle-caps, screw-off caps from beverage bottles, to a piece of cardboard from a furniture box, cut to just larger than the WinBook footprint.

My daughter has an enormous beast of a laptop containing a desktop processor (HP NX9600). It's a desktop replacement model with a full sized keyboard w/numeric keypad. And it runs very hot, too hot to use as an actual laptop without cooking yourself.

Someone bought her a cooling pad for it, but it's too small and the fan in it spins in the wrong direction, causing the laptop to run hotter than without it.

So my daughter keeps it on her desk, elevated with 4 empty tuna fish cans, wondering if she were to slide a baking tray under there, if she could bake cookies with it.  :D
