Official Announcements / Re: Winners of the June 2007 Software Giveaway
« Last post by mouser on June 17, 2007, 09:50 PM »
Carl, Thanks again so much for running this and organizing the discounts this month. It's only because of your work that there are discounts and giveaways in June

In case anyone is curious, the prize optimizer i wrote works quite well and *most* things are automatic, but the method for keeping track of weights so people dont win too ofter requires a manual step that is very easy to forget, so it's as much my fault as anything.. i'll try to fix the program to make this less likely in the future.

hi chris,

i forwarded your email from june14 to cthorpe who is handling discounts and stuff on donationcoder.  i should have sent you a quick reply when i got it anyway so you know we got it.. you can imagine things get pretty busy for us and it can take a while for us to get around to these things.

anyway, i did get the email, and it's in the hands of the person who will follow up :)

the other possibility is that it's some bacteria or something in your keyboard.. since keyboards are cheaper than lcds, one quick thing to try would be buy the cheapest keyboard you can find and try that for a week or something.

also don't forget that cleaning stuff and soap could cause it, so don't trick yourself into thinking you have an alergy by constantly cleaning everything on your desk and then finding you keep having the alergic reaction.

I tend to pay a lot of attention to tests that run in the browser and and simulate what another website could do.  but any "test" which requires me to download and run an exe is not something i consider very relevant, since i think if a malicious adversary can get you to download and run an exe on your pc (and you dont run it inside a virtual machine like vmware or virtualpc), you have lost the game already, and there isn't much you can do to prevent harm.

Now that's not to say that they don't make a good product, I don't know.  If they are coming up with an easier way to virtualize specific applications, etc., that could be a cool thing.  I'm only saying i don't need a "test" to tell me that if i download and run a random exe on my machine that there is little protection against what it wants to do.

I would love to see zaine post about his feelings about microsoft.. He has definitely been pursuing an interest in open source stuff lately, but he has also in the past been a defender of Microsoft if my memory serves me, and a fan of some MS tools I think (OneNote?), so he is not one of those pure Microsoft Haters..

off topic:
Spoiler
Personally I veer back and forth between liking and hating Microsoft.. In this age where we increasingly see giant companies which do virtually nothing but buy out technology of other companies and market it, i wonder how long it's going to take before we really start missing the days of Microsoft, when companies actually developed code in house..

wow that is strange, i've never heard of that one before..
searching around newsgroups suggests this:
"I have seen this kind of behavior when some one has Extra Large or Large
Fonts enabled. "

do you happen to have your computer configured for super large fonts?

I've also read a suggestion that it could be a bug with "ComCtl32.dll" system dll -- maybe you could check the version of this file on your system? (find the file, right click on properties to see version).

ps. We might take this discussion off to email ([email protected]) until we figure something out..

Living Room / Flash Game of the Day: Walk in the Part - Very Sweet

This is a really sweet game where you control a dog who walks with his friend, a guitar playing wheelchair bound man.  Definitely play through the tutorial to level 1 where they have to work together.. If you have a family member in a wheelchair it might even bring a tear to your eye.

f the application window is closed, treat that as pushing the [cancel] button so that nothing is written--not even a blank file.
agree.

Change the name of the [close] button to [Output & close].  Honestly, I didn't even understand the real function of the [close] button until I read this forum.

yeah, something like that is needed.

I might also add that the protection feature that warns you that you're closing the app without saving the tree sometimes forgets to warn you.

let me fix this, and then decide whether auto saving tree changes should be automatic.

i am slowly adding the ability for all of my programs to be configured to use options stored either in their program directories or in docs and settings or user chosen directory.  the option is important for people who like to run the programs portably.  the feature has been added to screenshot captor and find+run robot.  i'll add it to the form letter machine too.

Newsletter for June 15th, 2007
Codename "Heat Wave"

"If you read nothing else on our site, read our BLOG"

1. DonationCoder.com News
Do you wake up in the middle of the night with a cold sweat fearing that you missed some important news on our website?  We didn't think so.  But you might still be interested in catching up on some official news from the site.

2. Editor's Corner
Welcome to another edition of the newsletter.  We normally do two a month, but occasionally things get backlogged and we end up with one giant one.  This "Editor's Corner" section is a new part of the newsletter, where I'll try to write some informal comments about the website in order to make this newsletter worth reading even for the hardcore forum members.  For this newsletter I just want to tell you about some cool stuff coming up in July, because I'm really excited about it.

Find and Run Robot v2 Beta will *finally* be released to the public after over 6 months of constant development.  It's a huge leap forward from version 1, and with the plugin contest ending in July, it should be a big month for FARR.  The new update checking code should be in place by then as well, which means update checking for all DonationCoder software, and perhaps 3rd party software as well(!).  Forum member Gothic and I have also been working on a very cool top secret open source project which is bound to create some interest from some other communities.  And hopefully by then Wordzilla will unveil his improved forum searching code.

3. Your Input Requested!
We want your participation on the DC forum! It's ok if you're normally shy and reserved and scared to post questions and comments -- we give you permission to make an exception for these posts.  Some people think our forum is only for expert power users, but it's really a giant mix of users, and we want you to participate, regardless of your background.  So take a deep breath and jump in!

4. Reviews and Mini-Reviews
You'll find two kinds of reviews on DonationCoder.com: Big Comparative Reviews, and Short single-program Mini-reviews.  This month we have a bit of both for you.

5. Discounts for June
Supporting Members, you've only got until June 17 to enter the shareware giveaway drawing, and only until the end of the month to take advantage of this month's discounts:

6. General Software Discussion
Above all else, discussion on the DonationCoder.com forum focuses around software, old and new, and finding the best tool for the job.  Have a question or want advice on what program to use? Ask it!

7. Fun and Games
Our readers are obsessed with productivity and time management, but even the hardest workers need an occasional quick burst of recreation and diversion.  Nothing too complicated -- just enough to recharge your batteries.

8. The Wonderful World of the Web
Are you suffering from IOS (Internet Overload Syndrome)?  We thought so.  Have you just figured out what web2.0 means? (get ready because web3.0 is coming soon).  To help reduce your overload, here's a list of some of the more interesting website discussions, debates, and discoveries that have come up on the forum over the last month..

9. Developer's Corner
Don't be thrown off by the name of this section on our forum.  It's not just for programmers.  It's also for people interested in starting their own business and website developers, students and entrepreneurs.  Even if you're not sure whether you belong in that category, you might want to peek your head in and see if there's anything interesting out there that might want you to start up a new hobby.

10. Website of the Month
Our website of the month in June is Gizmo's Tech Support Alert. Gizmo is a great guy and his generous inclusion of some of our software in his freeware lists has brought some of the nicest people to our site.  Gizmo's list of Best Freeware Utilities is legendary, and his newsletter has developed a well deserved devoted following.  Highly recommended for anyone who loves software!

And did you know that DonationCoder.com has a list of all of our past best-of-the-web recommendations? Well now you do.

As you all know, this site has no other funding besides the donations of normal everyday people who use our software and enjoy our website.

We don't have venture capital investors, we don't charge companies for talking about their software, we don't accept commissions on sales, etc.

So naturally it's important to us that we find a reasonable way to keep encouraging donations, while not giving up our ideals.

  • A large number of you have donated to the site, and for that we are grateful. Thank You!! :)
  • For those on a very limited budget who don't feel they can afford to donate, no further explanation is required, and we have no interest in trying to convince you that you should (see my little little joke chart of recommended donations by income).
  • This post is really directed to those people who feel they could afford to make a donation, and might consider doing so in the future, but don't feel like we are doing what we need to do yet to earn your donation.

So, if you've already donated, you can ignore this thread.  And if you're not donating because you can't afford it, you can also ignore it.

But if you have some advice for us on how we might be able to earn your donation, please let us know by posting a reply (or if you feel shy, you can send me a personal message on the forum or email me at [email protected] and i will keep your comments confidential).

Of course I'm not at all guaranteeing that we are going to make any changes that people suggest.. In fact we're probably more inclined to make changes to please those people who have already donated, but we do care about what you think and I can promise your suggestions and criticisms will be treated with the utmost respect.

Thanks for the nice comments -- I really do appreciate hearing when people like my programs.

The problem you are posting about has been mentioned before and should be fixed, if you do the following:
go the options -> general settings tab, and for DPI put 72.  The lower the DPI, the bigger the image will appear in programs like Word.

Screenshot - 6_15_2007 , 2_03_45 PM.png

Note that any images you grabbed before changing the DPI will still have the old DPI so you need to manually change their DPI from the menu if you want to fix pre-existing screenshots.

The default DPI i think now is set to 72 but if you had an old install with a higher DPI that could explain your problem.

i'll look into it and see if i can duplicate the issue.  no reason it shouldn't work, but it's one of those features that doesn't get much testing so you never know..
