thats a fine place to put it, BUT you might want to put the subdir in the Installed folder directory since its not something you are supposed to be editing.

then just go to FARR options and close options, that should get FARR to rediscover all alias files.

Developer's Corner / Re: Is this the right place?
« Last post by mouser on July 17, 2007, 07:18 PM »
it's the right section of our forum but since there are only 1 or 2 smf coding people here it's unlikely that someone here will be able to do it.  there is a smf forum section for asking for people to do work, though my recent experience on smf forum discussions has left me feeling a bit antagonistic to them, despite the great product.

ps1.
i like your avatar :)
ps2.
in general the people on this site code for the fun of it, and it's probably not the best idea to offer to pay people in credits, etc.  mostly credits are just ways of saying thank you to someone rather than a way of hiring someone :)

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FarrUninstall plugin - v1.0
« Last post by mouser on July 17, 2007, 06:30 PM »
one thing that might be cool to think about for a future version:
when triggering on an app, instead of launching the uninstall dialog directly, what if it brought up a small dialog showing some info about the the program that could be installed, like:
directory size, last execution date, install date (dates could be inferred from file dates?),
and then with buttons for:
Uninstall, Browse Directory (which would launch explorer at the program directory), Google program name, or Close.

just an idea.

i agree we can come up with ideas here, but it would help to have someone who is going to work on it before we bother.

it should be more over the top:
"since the dawn of the micro computer age, there is one feature that all users have dreamed of.."
"even albert einstein, the creator of the theory of relativity, could not have forseen the revolutionary mathematical algorithms that make possible the technology behind this program.."

"Using patented technology developed co-jointly by Nasa and the Russian State Cosmology Institute, and China's famed PRJKHA secret service, and stolen by industrial espionage in the 1970s, FARR is able to anticipate your every keystroke.  Even when the results are not what you were thinking of, you can rest assured that the program is thinking 2 steps ahead of you and has suggested the right file."

I was originally thinking the video would be just powerpoint slides with narrators.

But maybe it could include a mac vs. pc style intro, with one person being FARR and another being an unnamed competitor?
26209
I had a funny idea today..

I'm going to make a bunch of real video screencast demos of FARR v2 to show how to use all of it's features.

But i was thinking it would be hillarious if we could also make a satire one, you know one of those fancy-looking videos narrated by someone with an upper crust accent telling you how this product will revolutionize the world..

I was thinking something really over the top, which had like testimonials by people with 5 different accents, saying stuff like about how FARR has mind reading abilities and works even while you are asleep and the computer is unplugged.. Stuff like that :)

But i don't really have time to make this since i have to work on FARR 2 coding!!)&(*@&@$(*@$

Anyone feel like volunteering to round up the narrators and create this? you only have a week or two at most..

I think it would be so fun to see.  :-* :-* :-*

i like what you are thinking of.. i wonder what the best way to do it is..
I could add controls to do what you want i think but maybe we can think of an even better way..
Can you describe exactly what you are trying to do and maybe it will help me understand what is needed.

By the way, member Ehtyar has written an extremely cool plugin he is going to post soon that is made to let other programs talk to FARR, and he might be willing to add stuff to help you..

Find And Run Robot / Re: CPanel alias problem
« Last post by mouser on July 17, 2007, 03:54 PM »
heres an example of the power of aliases:
if you wanted a version of cpanel that always showed all results, you could make a new alias
called for example: acp

and use the dosearch special alias result to conduct a cpanel search with +sall added to the search string.
i'll leave the details as an excercise (see my post on pf alias for clues).

if no one figures out how to do it i will post the solution :)

yep jgp has it nailed.

when there are more results than will fit your search, only the top few are shown.  narrow down the matches by typing more keywords or type +sall to show them all.

Living Room / jayisgames competition playable games now being posted
« Last post by mouser on July 17, 2007, 10:46 AM »
JayIsGames.com has begun posting the winners of its latest flash game competition.. if they are anything like the last competition they will be of high quality: http://jayisgames.com/

ps.
it seems they have also taken this occasion to start prominently inserting unlabeled paid advertisement images for sponsors games.  not very nice

Did you ever hesitate to leave your laptop for a few minutes in a public space like a library? Afraid that someone will take your laptop? Now there is a simple and free solution to this problem! Laptop Alarm will ring a loud alarm whenever someone tries to steal your laptop!

  • The alarm will ring when someone tries to log off or shut down your laptop to take it with him.
  • When the laptop is disconnected from AC-power (someone pulls the AC adapter plug out) the alarm will go off!
  • When your USB mouse is pulled out the alarm will go off! If someone wants to take your laptop he will definitely pull your mouse out.

this is as good a place as any for this good question.. now where are the replies!?  I know we have some people here who love web2 online apps, surely they must know some forums for discussing them.

Coding Snacks / Re: Page data harvest
« Last post by mouser on July 17, 2007, 10:07 AM »
browsers already have a function in file menu for saving html for a page.. maybe you are asking only for a simple addon or hotkey that will trigger that file save function (and name it a certain way?)
26218
this sounds like a useful request (the batch part specifically -- is that where the existing programs are failing to live up to requirements?)

Just tested it, works great.

I still can't get over the fact that TnS did this completely on his own without a single question asked of me (like all of the other plugin writers!)

TnS drop me a line to say hello :)

This one is very well done and fun too with some nice design twists.  I still don't know how to use the middle upgrade stuff..

It would be nice to see some sample gui mock-ups of the game.

Having seen your drawing skills, which are similar to mine, I wonder if there isn't someone on the forum who might be willing to help in this department..

yes, mugs are still available to plugin writers!
i'll include a picture of my cat in addition, as a bonus prize.  :P

DcUpdater / Re: Crazy and probably not feasible idea: DCUpdate swarming.
« Last post by mouser on July 16, 2007, 12:04 PM »
it's not a terrible idea, but my understanding is that the download bandwidth on dc is really not a problem, so it would really be a matter of solving a problem that doesn't exist, while adding a lot of extra coding..  it's not a bad idea in general though, and it could be something to think about for some software if dcupdate is to become more general.

for example the remote update file on the server might simply point dcupdater to a torrent or file checksum which dcupdater could then launch in an external tool.  so dcupdate would detect a new version, alert user, and then initiate a download of the new version via an established torrent tool.
