FARR is running fine on vista for me.. anyone have any idea why there would be this problem?

a whole new wonderful hotkey system is coming in the next release..
no more hotkeys associated with aliases.. now all hotkeys (main ones for showing farr), and helper ones for starting searches, will be unified, and you'll be able to create as many hotkeys as you want to do different searches and alter the way farr shows on they keypress.

i also note that josh will finally get his ability to use Win-key for FARR hotkey.

Thanks cnewtonne, that cheers me up -- i always feel strange when i see another FARR "competitor" out there, like why am i breaking my back if someone else is getting paid well to do similar work.

I think much of what you say is really true -- much of software is designed for the lowest common denominator, and the power users experience can suffer.  I try to listen to the power users most of all, since those are the people that interact with me here.

But of course I know you agree that doesn't mean there isn't stuff to learn from these smooth operators, and try to make the user interface experience as painless and natural for everyone.  There is always lots to learn from other programs.

Seriously though, thank you for those words of support -- I needed to hear that people still want FARR :)

This is a realllllllly cool plugin.
People might figure out other requests for things to be added as well -- it's sort of an advanced thing, so it might be a while before people come up with ways to use this, but i think this has great potential.

Maybe some communication in the other direction could be useful too -- like a way for a program to be notified whenever the user searches, launches, or selects something in FARR.

yes i will at the end of the month when FARR 2 goes public.
from the updater if you drag up the bottom of the panel, youll be able to see the download url.

the way it presents what you search against the current search result (like quicksilver)

can you elaborate on this a bit?

it seems that if you search Google using their google command, it will show your past searches (using that command)

interesting idea, and since FARR does keep track of past search histories by default i could add this as an option without too much trouble..

Looks pretty good - i'd appreciate hearing any features people see in dash that you think are missing from FARR.

thanks for the report.. good old eo video saves the day again -- i've actually used it for converting Quicktime (or was it Real) video in the past and it did an admirable job.

if you ever feel like doing a "mini-review" on the forum of eo video as a way of giving them some well deserved attention, please consider it.  it's probably a program that others could benefit from learning about.

« Last post by mouser on July 18, 2007, 12:15 PM »
keep 'em coming!!
i'm going to make a web page (wiki?) soon with all download packs for farr2.
26191
yeah i thought of that solution justice..
here is what i came up with however that might be better:

what if i removed the hotkey settings from aliases, and made hotkeys a separate tab, where you just basically configure hotkey + text pairs.  hit a hotkey and it pops up farr and starts searching for the text.

seems more sensible to me and easier to keep track of and manage your hotkeys too..

thoughts?

On first glance it looks wonderfully interesting.

I might just have a look at this from an AI perspective and give a little report on the approach when i get a few spare hours.

Thanks for the heads up.

yes, i think i can speed it up.

maybe all it needs is a manifest saying that pt must run with admin privileges.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Display Properties/Settings shortcut function
« Last post by mouser on July 18, 2007, 02:42 AM »
this is a very good idea.. there may be some existing tools to do that.
one non-free one that works wonderfully is UltraMon (http://realtimesoft.com/ultramon/), which lets you save profiles you can start via tray menu, which will set various resolutions on different monitors, including disabling or enabling them.
26196
new version is up -- those of you who prefered the old refresh method -- can you see if this one is any better.

keep in mind, yes there is a slight delay now between your keypress and the update of the display of results, but in fact the underlying search should be a little faster.

that's not to say that you won't prefer the old method. just a reminder that we aren't talking about a slower search.

anyway, let me know what you think since i'm making some hard decisions here about how this should work.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: NirCmd Setup, a guide of sorts
« Last post by mouser on July 17, 2007, 11:48 PM »
When DCUpdater does its stuff, all the updates get written to the virtual store directory. It was a real mess.

oh that is really not cool.
i specifically named the program dcupdate launches to unpack the files in a manner that i thought should make vista ask the user to elevate the rights of the unpacker so that they are installed in the real program files directory..  i am going to have to make some changes if its not doing that.

but wait.. the updater doesnt modify the aliases.. thats only done by the full install tool.

i think you may have misdiagnosed this particulat problem (though the virtual store may be implicated in other issues with farr).
i think this is more of a case of an old version of farr having the nircmd alias and the new version didnt deleted it just added one.  new users shouldnt experience this problem.
26198
strange, pt works fine on vista as far as i can tell..

im having a hard time reproducing the problem..
what exactly happens when you use the right "numpad" keys.. does it try to launch a file? if so then thats an option.

ah that would make sense.. a competing cmd command.
