Many of the clipboard enhancers offer permanent clips - freeware ones include ClipCache 1.41 and ArsClip.  "Big" ones like ClipMagic keep everything permanently anyway, unless you set automatic purge features, and you could set a specific group.  Kevin Solway's ClipText is a bit like a more limited version of Multi Clipboard mentioned by tinjaw above.

Alternative approaches - PowerPro's snippets, or a keyword-driven system like Type Pilot, shareware, or their freeware but less-featured version, Speed Pilot.  Or AutoHotkey's hotstrings.

Hi,
For me, what is important is very small footprint (better so if the application remains closed but can be fired open in negligible time using Directaccess or Activewords hotkey), allowing me to jot my notes and gets closed in a jiffy.

This is an advantage of Treepad Lite.  It's one of the smallest, so fastest to load.

Of late, I am using simple .txt files (windows notepad) to capture the notes and use a simple activewords macro to "saveas" using text in the first line of the note.

Despite your use of Syncback, etc., aren't you running the risk of overwriting existing date by accidentally giving text files the a name you have used already?  Unless your macro adds date and time to the name, of course.

Ideally yes. But I hesitate to commit myself to any propereitary format for obvious reasons.

This seems to me one of the outstanding problems of this class of software  :(

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Spell-checking needs wrapped lines?
« Last post by rjbull on April 15, 2007, 11:46 AM »
I haven't been able to properly replicate it at home (Win98), will try again at work if I have time.  But, TED Notepad, being an editor, by default doesn't add CR+LFs, so it may well be something to do with that.

General Software Discussion / PowerPro development to cease this month
« Last post by rjbull on April 15, 2007, 11:30 AM »
Message posted by Bruce Switzer in the main Yahoo! Group for PowerPro:

Folks:
My current plans are to stop all PowerPro development at the end of
April.  I have fixed a couple of small bugs in the last weeks, and will
look at any that are reported before April 30.  After that, I will no
longer respond to bug reports (or feature requests).

I am aware of a couple of outstanding bugs which I have decided not to
attempt to fix:

- *window menu move fails if dialog open:  too complicated to fix

- missing tooltip help for some dialog elements of configure dialog:  I
don't want to open the configure program just to do this.

Can Process Tamer be remotely enabled/disabled, i.e., can you put a command in a scheduler to enable or disable it?  Then when running 24/7 I can let the remote administrators do what they will when I'm not present, but can automatically reclaim a reasonable degree of control when I am.  If you see what I mean...

Clipboard Help+Spell / Spell-checking needs wrapped lines?
« Last post by rjbull on April 13, 2007, 06:19 AM »
Mouser,

I wrote a chunk of text in the excellent small editor TED Notepad, pressed Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C to copy it to the clipboard, then Ctrl-Alt-V to bring up CHS 1.11.01 in spell-checker mode.  The formatting of the text in the view pane was so scrambled it was hard to read.  If I committed word-wrap in TED-NP and repeated the process, the text appeared OK.  Is this a known buglet?

2607
I'm very new to Process Tamer and I'm using 2.06.01.  I think the help file needs minor re-wording where it says disable/enable by double-clicking the tray icon.  You can set it that way in Configuration, but I don't think it does that out of the box, and the help file should probably put the default action first.

Does it make any sense to be able to set percentage trigger levels individually?

ProcessTamer / Re: Process Tamer gets rave review

Is it just me, or are you sure you put in the right link now?  I can't see any reference to ProcessTamer on that page?  ...  ?

You can also do what you want with PowerPro

Nomadin,

Do you need to enable PowerPro's tray support, which isn't the default?

Creating new outlook items

cnewtonne,

I take it this is for the "full" version of Outlook, not Express?

I thought of giving Outlook etc. an alias of Bureaucracy, which turned out to shorten by John Knowles' ABCZ system to "bury."  Which is about what I'd like to do with it...

It will be interesting to see if FSL ever finishes his freeware...
When I looked at that one, it seemed to me that one way for someone to make extra money in a situation like that might be to keep it in development, motivating people to pay by giving them special access to the otherwise unavailable software.

Isn't that much like old-fashioned commercial transactions, before the idea of shareware got invented?  Not sure I see how it would make extra money, especially as alternatives exist...

KenR, any hope of a comparative review?

Hmmm, interesting question rjbull. I'll tell you what, you take a look at Link Commander and then tell me if you think there's any need for a comparative review. I looked at all the programs and I thought it blew the others away.

I looked at the cost of a commercial license for the portable version, and thought it too high for me.  Also I'm not sure if the license would cover all needs, such as using it from a USB stick in an Internet cafe or similar, though I suspect it would cover such uses.  Actually, as a registered user of ClipCache, I had a chance I passed on for a discount on LinkStash.  I'm kind of hoping that Rose City Software might make me another special offer some time   ;)

It will be interesting to see if FSL ever finishes his freeware...

General Software Discussion / Re: Monitor Resolution change tools?

PowerPro can change resolutions, and toggle between them...

- kill running processes.

May not need a new item - check out Taskill at DS Software.  Can be used as a command-line app, you just need to add the name of the executable to kill, e.g.  "taskill foobar.exe"

There's a free program killer add-on for SlickRun, too.

2615
There's also LinksBase by FSL, but it's permanently "coming soon"  :(

KenR, any hope of a comparative review?

2616
If you don't mind command lines, there's XXCOPY  The free version is perfectly capable, but the payware one is better for networks.

2617
Don't have a direct answer, but a great source of free software suggestions, especially for graphics and the Web, is Ken Laninga's list,  http://www.sticksite.com/freesoft.htm  Maybe Background Magic from his Page 2, or Reptile from Page 3, would suit?

Post New Requests Here / Re: Ini-File writer
« Last post by rjbull on March 25, 2007, 04:06 PM »
You might find IniFile a useful tool:

IniFile handles Windows type INI files with section names in square brackets, and assignments of the form: item=string.

Syntax:

INIFILE filename [section] item=string    change or write
INIFILE filename [section] item=    remove item
INIFILE filename [section] item==    clear item
INIFILE filename [section] /remove    remove entire section
INIFILE filename [section] item > temp.bat    read item
INIFILE filename [section] > temp.bat    read all items of section

Items and sections are generated if not found. The INI file must exist.

Reading an assignment sends a SET statement to STDOUT for redirection to a temporary batch file.

General Software Discussion / Re: Text xpander that can handle RTF
« Last post by rjbull on March 20, 2007, 10:37 AM »
Type Pilot says this:

You can use Type Pilot as a depository for storing thousands of long words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs or even entire messages. You don't even have to define keywords for them - any phrase can be easily "extracted" from Type Pilot using a tree-like structure. The program works in any word processor.

You can also use Type Pilot as your usual pim (personal information manager). The program allows you to keep any text, formatted text, OLE objects (ex. pictures, waves and so on) in a tree-like structure.

Note the word "formatted," but, they don't specify exactly what they mean by that.

What do you mean by "support RTF?"  That is, if you're in an RTF word processor, all you're seeing is the text, so presumably most text expanders would work?

Back in the 'Old' days when I ran a BBS that received files from a satellite system, I had written a program that did this in order to initiate other actions...

I immediately thought of John Souvestre's SLEEP.  Ah, the good old days...  :(
