General Software Discussion / Re: PIM's
« Last post by Josh on May 25, 2007, 12:50 PM »
OK Folks, prepare for a rant.

I have recently been trying out Do-Organizer, mentioned in this thread. This program has everything I am looking for in a PIM and then some. The program is very well designed and incorporates a lot of nice technology. The program is a tad on the expensive side, as can be seen here, but in my opinion, for what (Do-Organizer) offers, it is well worth it.

While the program itself is great, the support is not. I have been evaluating this program and have tried to reach their support for over a week now. I have registered at their forum 3 times now (third time being today) only to find my account deleted after being in a "Pending admin approval" status for only a day each time. I registered yesterday afternoon, only to come in this morning and find my account removed. I have received no replies from their support staff ([email protected]) so contact with them seems impossible. People seem to rant and rave over their support, however, I cannot get any pre-purchase support. For a program which costs 24.95 plus upwards of 19.95 for each module, you would think the support staff would be a bit more responsive. However, this has not been the case. I am more than ready to shell out the $80 required for the modules I will use, however, if this is the support I can expect, I am going to have to look elsewhere.

Has anyone else had any dealings with them? If so, does anyone have a forum account which they can post a message for me using?

Anyways, end of rant, I will update if I ever hear back from them. If I get my account deleted without approval again today, I quit.

I am trying to save the way my folder tree is expanded so it opens as such everytime I restart outlook. Does anyone know how to go about doing this? Currently, everything opens up collapsed which is hugely annoying. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Living Room / To the community

To the DC Community,

Over the past year and a half, I have been a member of this community and I wanted to take the time to do something I feel is long overdue. I wanted to send out a huge thank you to The staff, the members, and all the guests/lurkers on this site. It is because of everyone here that I have found half the programs I now use on a daily basis. It is because of this community that I now have a much greater appreciation for compensating authors for their work. It is because of this community that I now have a deeper understanding of how coders work and how much they really do for their programs.

So in summary, thank you to everyone that is associated with this fine site. Its been fun so far and I cant wait to see what the future brings.

Respectfully
Josh

One step ahead of ya good buddy ;-)

Evolution looks promising, however, I dont need a replacement email client. I will still give it a shot, but I think a dedicated app would be best suited for this task. Thanks for your input :)

I like agenda at once
cause you can see list notes scheduler & calender all at one time.
Loads of shortcuts, fairly logical interface whatever.

Thank you for mentioning Agenda At Once, Tomos.

It doesnt seem to do contact management

Actual v3 beta does have contact management. Regarding other features, there's still lot to be implemented before v3 final.

I like to be able to organise in that manner but
I would love some sort of tagging system or being able to say mark X and Y etc. from different projects as next-tasks

In the v3 beta, you already can assign multiple categories (or tags) to a task. Current beta allows filtering just by one of them, but one of next betas will allow more complex filters.

Anyway, Josh or anyone interested, if you wish to try AAO v3 beta just let me know and I will add you to beta testers list.

-vradmilovic (May 10, 2007, 03:03 AM)

Dont know how I didnt see your post, can you add me to the v3 beta testers list? I would like to try it out and see if it has what I am looking for in a PIM

Movie collector is an awesome app. It beats the pants off of dvd profiler (although I wish they would fix their canvas drawing system as it is entirely too slow, just click on an entry in the main app and you will see what I am talking about). To see my collection, go to http://crosscut.whaddu.com/movies

By any chance, has anyone used essentialPIM pro or free extensively? I am just starting to test this one out and want to see what a long standing user thinks of it. Thanks!

I am looking for a good PIM program and open myself up to the likes of all the donationcoder citizens. Being that I've made requests for things like this from you all, I trust and value your input. So if you could, please list which you use or have tried, their strengths and weaknesses and what you like most/least about them. I, ideally, want one that does all the basics (calendar w/ reminders, todo, contact management) plus some advanced features (encryption of data, backup system, import from programs like thunderbird).

Thoughts? Conundrums? Concurrments?

This will not do damage to the drive, or it shouldnt if the drive was manufacturer in any decent fabrication facility. I wouldnt worry about it honestly. It would be like doing a full format on the drive.

General Software Discussion / Re: opera 9.2 is out

Like I said, opera is a great browser, but unexpected crashes at seemingly random intervals along with my inability to truely make the browser MINE by installing applications or "extensions" which allow me to work faster, better and easier are showstoppers for me.

spelled the same? KeePass != KeyPass last I checked.

A driver affecting a web browser? I doubt it. If I am having a driver conflict with opera and opera alone, then something is coded horribly wrong in opera. These crashes seem to happen on any PC I use opera on. One time I was in the middle of typing a large email into my webmail site, and opera crashed causing me to lose 30 minutes of my time reconstructing said email.

Opera is a very fast browser, perhaps the fastest (IN MY OPINION) and it works really well, however, the crashes along with the fact that I am limited to what the developers feel I should use, make me stay away.

I've experienced numerous crashes with opera when doing basic things like navigating BACK in history, reloading a page, or just leaving the browser idle. I've reported all of these with the crash log program they have on their forum, but never received any resolution on any of the crashes.

Security

In the Security preferences you can manage your security certificates and set up which security protocols to use. Opera can also warn you about potentially unsafe situations.
Master Password

To prevent other people from using your certificates, you can set a master password with strong 168-bit triple DES encryption.

You will then be asked to enter your master password when you want to use your certificates.
Select a password that is impossible to guess and keep it secret
Set Opera to ask for the master password every time needed if other people have access to your computer or user account

You can also use the master password to protect your e-mail, news, and Wand passwords.
http://help.opera.co....02/en/security.html

Well there you go!
No more need for Roboform then right?

Have you used roboform before? Becuase you seem to be missing the whole point of the application. Opera does not offer anywhere near the functionality that roboform provides. Its not just about remembering passwords, its about form completion (hell, opera doesnt even have autocomplete, something even the most basic browsers have). If Opera ASA really wanted users to swap, they would let them extend their browser in ways that they want to, not in ways the developer feels they should. Its also not about finding a way to SETTLE for what opera has, its about finding a way to use programs which go beyond what opera offers and gives the user what they want.

Exactly, and again, this shows you why allowing third party programs can be a good idea. It allows users to expand functions (absent or not) of the browser or application to suite their needs. By not allowing this, they block out users who would potentially switch.

While I can see that roboform isnt a necessity for some users here, it is for thousands of users whose voices can be heard by a google search of roboform opera and searching roboform on the opera forums. This, in my opinion, will be why opera doesnt make a bigger dent in the browser market. While it is customizable up the wazoo for its gui and its included features, its not totally customizable and the users are locked out of features that 3rd party applications can provide.

dantheman: roboform is a toolbar which incorporates into 99% of browsers minus WebTV, Compuserve, Old netscapes and Opera. Roboform itself is a standalone program for remembering logins but its primary purpose is to fill web forms, something which requires an API or a way to hook into the browser. Roboform is not the only application which cannot tie into opera, no application can. Google's and Yahoo's toolbars cannot tie into opera, various 3rd party applications cannot. Its not a matter of roboform not supporting opera, its a matter of opera not giving other applications a way to support opera.

Fastest where it really matters, in browsing speed (page rendering, back/forward). But again, that is subjective. On my system, opera runs faster when it comes to rendering pages, browser response, control response, and its overall lighter as well. But like I said, this is subjective. I am not out to start a war on which browser is better. On every system I've used, opera responds and handles better than other browsers. Please, dont turn this into a "Which browser is better" thread. I merely stated my opinion and am not intending on defending my position as I feel it has been done numerous times in the past on various other forums.

People will use what they prefer, and I know that I would prefer to use opera, however, I cant because roboform is not supported which was the main point of my post. Not to start another browser war.

I like opera, it is by far the fastest browser, but I simply cannot use it until I can have roboform back incorporated into my configuration. I understand opera's need for "security", but at least give the user a choice. Locking us down to what the dev's feel is pertinent to a browser is like ford telling you that you have to settle for a stock engine or stock radio when much better alternatives exist.
