Maybe a good way to add this, IF i add this, would be as a plugin, so it would be optional.

ProcessTamer / Re: Config always says Tray prog isn't running.
« Last post by mouser on August 12, 2007, 11:59 PM »
when the thing with the slow letters starts happening, quickly bring up the process tamer config and switch to the process view and see what process is using a lot of the cpu.

the problem could be
1) a misbehaving process on your computer
2) a high-cpu using process on your computer that doesnt respond well to being tamed by ProcessTamer.

but in both cases you'd see it having very high cpu usage at the time of the slow characters, so try to catch it when that happens.

one common type of program that can do that is a low-level security program like an Antivirus tool or similar thing.

General Review Discussion / Re: Educational Software reviews?

I'd love to see more educational/school software reviews, at all levels from preschool to post-graduate university stuff.

If this wasn't too difficult to add, should i add the ability for Screenshot Captor to capture desktop screencasts (movies)?
The movies would be in standard avi format, and i wouldnt provide any editing functionality in SC, you'd have to edit them in another program, and youd have to convert them to swf or whatever if you wanted, using another tool.

Can i see a show of hands regarding who would want this? or should i just leave this to other tools?

wordzilla is a true gentleman, he really worked hard to get it in shape so others could benefit from it.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Skin
« Last post by mouser on August 12, 2007, 12:06 PM »
Is there a feature to highlight search terms results ?

he means like if you search for note then in results you would see like:
notepad.exe
mynotes.doc

there is no way to do this currently.

Are there no skins with the FRR icon ?
no but someone could make a custom skin with a farr icon, or make one with cody.  :)

General Software Discussion / Ed Bott Vista Tip: Login Automatically
« Last post by mouser on August 12, 2007, 11:49 AM »
As long as you understand and accept the risks, here’s how to enable auto-logon (these steps work identically in all Vista editions, including Home Basic and Home Premium). These instructions assume you are using a workgroup configuration and not logging on to a Windows domain:

1. From an account in the Administrators group, click Start. In the search box, type netplwiz and press Enter. This opens the Advanced User Accounts Control Panel shown here. (Update: If you’re trying to accomplish this in Windows XP, click Start, Run, and type control userpasswords2 in the Open box.)

... continues ...

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR finds but can't open?
« Last post by mouser on August 12, 2007, 10:06 AM »
i have to tell you that i meant to remove that option a long time ago.. i'm still not 100% sure why your computer is not letting farr launch shortcuts directly -- my best guess is some security software on your computer.  well next time someone tells me to remove some options i'll point them to this thread.

ps.
i think we need to nominate CleverCat to find us some more smilies for the smilie page when people post -- we need another 100 small smilie images so if you have some good one please send me.

You know it might be nice to collect lists of the best learning resources for each language to put in our programming school sections: https://www.donation...index.php?board=77.0

If anyone wants to take on that project it would be welcome.

if you find F+R slow to come up after it hasn't been used in a while, you could choose "Stay in Memory Longer" on the General tab option for "Inactive Memory Use".

CleverCat i notice you are having some trouble with these launcher programs.. I wonder if you have some antivirus or firewall or security program which is blocking them from launching shortcuts to programs?

Drag&Drop Robot / Re: ConfigFiles path screwed up
« Last post by mouser on August 11, 2007, 03:03 PM »
That is really strange.. almost as strange as hearing that someone else besides me used Drag+Drop Robot  ;D

I'll look into the code and see if i can figure out what is going wrong..
Question if you do File-> Open Configuration file and browse to one of the files in the ConfigFiles directory, does it work ok after that?
25943
Wow! very cool!!!

Works great by the way -- just remember to invoke the refresh/update repositories before searching for the first time.

very very cool.  i've also added this to my list of related programs in the dcupdater help file.

Really extremely cool.  :beerchug:

Interesting idea.. More formal version of the kind of thing we do in our Coding Snacks section.

Have an idea? Just need funding? Want to join with others to support to an idea? This site is for you.

They also have an interesting fee system that encourages open source software development, and seems like a reasonable approach to me.

How much do I have to pledge?
As much as you like. On projects with a proprietary license, the developer may set a minimum.

Is microPledge really free?
Yes, our service itself is free for open source projects: we don’t take a cut. Plus, any open source product that is produced is free to the world. This is because we want to encourage others to give stuff away free, too. However, for closed source projects we do charge a small fee. Unfortunately, the bank charges a small fee for processing your credit card that we simply can’t avoid. We charge this straight to you without adding our own margin. For more detail, see our fees.

Can I get my money back?
You’ve only pledged the money. It remains yours until all the pledgers agree by vote to pay the developer. If the developer doesn’t do anything, the pledgers won’t agree to pay. You can get your pledge back when the developer’s quote expires or before he’s started developing. Do this on your profile page under your current pledges.

How does payment work?
As a pledger, you have a say in the project. When the developer completes all or part of the project, he will post an estimate of his progress. Now you get a chance to review his work and vote on whether you agree with his estimate. You will be emailed to say that the developer has posted evidence of his estimate on the project website (unless you chose not to be emailed on your profile page).

After the vote, if the majority of pledgers agreed that the project is done, then the developer will be paid your full pledge. If the pledgers vote that the project is only partly done then you will have to pay for that part.

SUMMARY:
Open source license: Free.
Closed source license: 3% of each progress payment.
Proprietary license: 6% of each progress payment.
Quitting a project early: 10% of your earnings so far; microPledge will pledge the fee to the project so it can be earned by any subsequent developer.
Refunds: Unless you are doing open source, you must refund all your earnings back to pledgers if you don’t finish the project. Either that or you must release your source.
Incubator: $20 basic fee. Challenges cost $60 per hour of arbitration after the first hour.

They also make some interesting points about donations vs. pledges which is worth thinking about for people at donationcoder, especially for larger projects:
Why does pledging work better than donations?
    * You either get the software or your money back.
    * Software completion time is estimated by the developer.
    * The developer has the assurance the funds are available – as long as he does the job.

They seem to have thought out the system quite well and there is a fair bit of documentation and explanation for how everything works (developers see this page).

Anyway... I plan on requesting a member kit.  Can you tell me how much it is though so I don't have to feel bad that this makes the 2nd time I'll be receiving it?

The point of the member kit is to spread a little good karma.  It doesn't cost enough to worry about. in fact given the current dollar-to-karmapoint ratio i'd say that every time we send one out we probably make a net profit in terms points on the old mystical scoreboard in the sky, so go ahead and request another.

good idea i think.

if you were installing over a version of farr that is older than say 2.0.100 or so, then you have to exit farr from the tray before installing the new version, since older versions of farr won't exit themselves.

Again there are a few extensions to do this but this one looks good (haven't tried it yet!)

The Shareaholic extension for Firefox makes it easy for you to submit the web page you're viewing to digg, del.icio.us, facebook, google bookmarks, reddit and stumbleupon. If you prefer, you can also e-mail the web page to a friend.

Bonus feature: Real-time statistics from digg and del.icio.us
Check whether the web page you're on has been dugg, and how many times it has been saved on del.icio.us. Stats displayed in your browser, at your request.
