Screenshot Captor / Re: can't grab region on secondary monitor
« Last post by mouser on August 21, 2007, 06:11 AM »
I'm afraid this is a known bug not yet resolved -- these two modes only work on the monitor your mouse is on when you trigger them.. you have 3 options until it's fixed:
  • go to second monitor and then trigger the hotkey to capture region
  • go to options and choose to use the alternate redbox capture mode for regions
  • capture full screen or workspace and crop

Living Room / Link Story: 100 things you can make yourself
« Last post by mouser on August 20, 2007, 10:17 PM »
I don't know about some of these things but I used to make my own beer quite regularly.. great stuff.  Only the cat used to love to steal the fermentation lock thing that bubbles on top of the fermenting beer quite a lot.  And one of the items here is making your soap, which reminds me of michelle's favorite laugh line, which is when i tell here how i bought one of those science kits to "make soap your own soap" and realized half way in that the ingredients were basically already soap.. i.e. i was making soap out of soap..

Convenience is certainly…well…convenient. Take a trip to just about any type of store and notice how everything is packaged and prepared. It seems the more we advance, the more stuff is done for us. I don’t mind letting someone else do all the work for me, the problem is of course, that convenience is expensive and we’re getting really lazy. I started thinking about all the things we can make ourselves if we put forth a little effort and found lots of cool instructions online.

Oh, and I think Website Watcher can also be set up to watch specific words, but it costs money.
Well i already own website watcher and love it, and use it for my daily reading, but i don't really think it's best suited for this.

The intermediate RSS services you listed seem like they might be just what i want, i'll go have a look.
25830
I'm looking for a very specific kind of RSS reader and i'm hoping i can get some recommendations.
I do not want an RSS reader to do daily reading of lots of feeds and sites.

I'm more interested in being able to quickly add tons of feeds (I'd be really happy if there was an easy way to add hundreds of feeds that other people have collected), and then have them monitored for keywords of my choosing, and then only show me items that match one of those feeds.

For example, i'd love to be able to monitor every programming-related rss feed i can find for references to specific tools i care about, etc. (or monitor for rss feeds mentioning donationcoder, etc.)

I don't really care if its a website service or local windows application.  Any suggestions?

General Software Discussion / Re: How do this in a screenshot?
« Last post by mouser on August 20, 2007, 05:48 PM »
You can do this pretty easily in Screenshot Captor (i've done it before), but it's definitely not a one-click proces..  i'm open to the idea adding some helper stuff to make it easier, though i'm not sure if this isn't yet another case where you are better off doing it in a real graphics editing program like The Gimp, Paint.net, etc.
25832
ps. on another note, one theoretical issue i have struggled with and haven't come up with a good solution for, and which i think is a really important issue to solve in the open source funding world, is how to divide up donations fairly to multiple de-centralized developers on a project.  This is a really tough academic problem and i'd love to see someone tackle it seriously.
25833
I think this is fascinating stuff and I really like the thought you've given this stuff.  It's actually probably a good subject for a dissertation in game theory and it will be fun to see how projects develop.

I know it's important to keep things as simple as possible, but i wonder if it might be interesting to consider a kind of sliding scale where you related percent complete to percent of pledge money available non-linearly, to really encourage completeion.. For example:

  • At 50% completion the developer is entitled to 10% of the pledges
  • At 70% complete they are entitled to 20% of pledges
  • At 80% complete, they are entitled to 30% of pledges
  • At 90% complete, they are entitled to 50% of pledges
  • at 95% complete, they are entitled to 75% of pledges
  • at 98% complete, they are entitled to 90% of pledges
  • at 100% complete, they are entitled to 100% of pledges

I think you'll see my point -- it expresses the fact that a 50% complete program is not half as valuable as a 100% complete program, and strongly incentivizes finishing the program.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FarrUninstall plugin - v1.02
« Last post by mouser on August 20, 2007, 04:40 PM »
great, the update file will be included with the next farr version so anyone can install/update the plugin from the updater.
25835
There is nowhere to download these plugins?

good point -- i'll make a big download pack where you can grab them all in one big zip.
also the new FARR2 web page will be public shortly and will have links to all known plugins.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FarrUninstall plugin - v1.02
« Last post by mouser on August 20, 2007, 04:32 PM »
page still seems to be for 1.01 and download link is still the old file http://farruninstall...ninstall%20v1.01.zip
25838
Right click on farr tray and say "check for updates", then go to the "Available for Installation" tab.  Click "Check for Updates" on that tab to get latest version info for all plugins, then to install a plugin simply right-click on it and choose to install.

The idea is that now rather than bundling plugins with the installer (making a bloated installer and installing stuff people dont want), now you can easily choose which to install using the updater.  One of the major motivations for writing the custom updater system was support for plugins.

Note you can also get more info on any plugin by right-clicking on it and choosing to visit the webpage for it.

(added) Automatic update checking.
great!

but why not let it actually install the update when a new version is available?
to do so make the following change to your .dcupdate file:
  <UpdateMethod>unzip</UpdateMethod>
  <SignalForUpdate>FindAndRunRobot.exe</SignalForUpdate>
  <CloseForUpdate></CloseForUpdate>
  <UpdateFile>http://farruninstall.googlecode.com/files/FarrUninstall.zip</UpdateFile>
and change your download file to have a fixed name of FarrUninstall.zip (putting version# in the download file will make the download location non-stable so needs to be removed).

I hope you will make this change TnS, since it would then allow me to add FarrUninstall to the tab where plugins that FARR knows how to install easily for new users is listed when people run the update check.

Living Room / Re: How do you organise your 'My Documents' folder
« Last post by mouser on August 20, 2007, 03:09 PM »
I do something that i find useful and could be combined with whatever other approach you take.
I like to keep separate the subdirectories that are automatically created for me by programs and those subdirectories i create myself.

So for example i never actually put my file in the MyDocumentss folder.  I leave MyDocuments alone and i create a MyDocs folder for my stuff.

That means I have a MyDocuments folders, which is full of directories created by programs when they install, etc., and then I have a MyDocs folder which is all my real stuff.  I find this makes it easier for me to isolate my "real" files from files created by programs which I don't really care about.  Note that this means that the "default" folder used by programs to store stuff is not going to be the MyDocs folder so this solution is only good for people who dont mind changeing where programs you really use store there stuff, etc.  i.e. don't do this unless you know what you are doing.

I do a similar thing with:
  • C:\Program Files <--- here is the folder used by all normal installer programs
  • C:\ProgramFiles <--- i created this for any programs that DONT have installers, which i create manually; this helps me easily identify programs which i manually "installed" and keep them distinct from programs with their own installers, and has been a great help
  • C:\Programs <--- some old programs have installers and dont like long paths with spaces, i created this directory for those.

I sold a bunch of stuff and and bought one monkey! It was damn fast.
Then i sold everything else and got myself another monkey.

put that on a bumper sticker or a t-shirt and confuse all your friends  ;D

it doesnt have to be in a subdirectory, i think he was only saying that if his script code specifies its in the subdirectory, then it has to be.  you can put it wherever you want as long as you call it properly.

I care about ken very much and i've talked with him so much on the irc channel for a long time and I have developed an appreciation for his dark sense of humour.  My diagram was simply a tribute to that dark sense of humour.  I'm not cavalier about the situation, only trying to live by the adage that sometimes humour is the best medecine. cya on irc ken

General Software Discussion / Re: Organizing Reviews
« Last post by mouser on August 19, 2007, 08:19 PM »
I have given a great deal of thought to creating a nextgen review system, with a hierarchy of editors and using wiki-like technology.  I'd love to work on it but we are talking about a very big project and i haven't yet found a way to either fund it and i dont have the time to work on such a large project without funding.

JrDebugLogger - The Cross-platform Debug Logging toolkit for C++.

Download from program web page: https://www.donation...buglogger/index.html

v1.12.01 - May 7, 2013
  • Now properly saves time/date stamps by default in output.

v1.11.01 - Nov 13, 2010
  • By default if a relative filename is specified for debug output (-dbo), it will be created in the application directory.  HOWEVER with windows vista/win7 this has become illegal/problematic.  JrDebug will now attempt to use the AppData directory (e.g. Users\Documents and Settings\AppData\JrDebug\Exename) by default on vista/win7 in these cases.  You can specify ;info along with the -dbo to have the directory used output;
  • Added debug directive to disable all windows-specific code, see Application Switch Files and Compile Flags.

v1.10.01 - Apr 7, 2010
  • [bugfix] due to an ambiguous matching of function definitions, dbprintf could result in wrong passing of arguments (only happened with 2 args passed to it, one int and one char*), which could cause assertion fault message. -- thanks ewemoa

v1.09.01 - Mar 27, 2010
  • [minor bugfix] debug messages sent to system were sometimes being split onto 2 lines (thanks ewemoa)
  • [minor feature] added option that can be specified with plain text outputters (including system output) to not show the "MessageType:" prefix on messages.

v1.08.01 - Mar 10, 2009
  • [minor bugfix] Fixed some deprecated compiler warnings generated by the latest gcc. (thanks Gothic).
  • [minor bugfix] added string.h and stdlib.h to compiled-in headers needed to compile on latest gcc (thanks Gothic).
  • [feature] added some documentation about using under *nix build system (thanks Gothic).

v1.07.01 - July 26, 2008
  • [minor feature] added code to add an AnsiString streaming helper for C++ Builder users (nothing extra for users to do, you can now stream AnsiString objects; define JrDebugDIRECTIVE_DontAddAnsiStringStreaming to disable its creation).

v1.06.01 - July 5, 2008
  • [minor feature] put -a at the end of a log output filename to signify it should be opened in append mode (otherwise it will be overwritten).

v1.05.01 - Aug 19th, 2007
  • bugfix -- jrdebug_notcompiled_macros.h had a missing #define
  • added fflush() after each file line output -- ensures file output is always up to date
  • re-ordered this changelog to put more recent stuff at top.

This update includes one bugfix that would cause a failure to compile in some cases, and one very important but minor call to fflush which ensures debug output files are always up to date.  So it it definitely a recommended update.

ps. This is one of my least well known releases, and it takes a bit of experimentation to get used to using it, BUT i personally find it extremely useful when debugging things like dlls are other background processes where showing stuff on the screen is not normally practical.

Welcome to the site berwyn

I should say that generally speaking I think the pricing scheme looks quite reasonable to me.  I particularly like the idea that the open source licensed software is free, and i like how you seem to have thought out the issues involving canceled projects, etc.

With such services and sites my focus is always on the "incentives" of the system -- do the rules of a system motivate people to behave well or behave badly?  Does it motivate them to create stuff that helps everyone involved? Or game the system to take as much as they can and give as little as possible?

And it seems to be that microPledge has set up a nice system where the incentives will lead to good stuff being produced in a fair way, with everyone benefiting.  I hope the project succeeds.  Our own experience with donations suggests it may be a hard uphill climb, but a fulfilling and interesting one.

It will be interesting to see how the thing about leaving a project early or not continuing work on a project works out.. i can see that it might be difficult to say when a program is "done", and i can see differences in opinion coming apart regarding how to decide when someone should be able to receive the money pledged vs. ensuring someone doesn't stop working on a project while there are still deadly bugs in it.  Of course that dilemna is found in all such contract programming projects and is not in any way unique to your system (in fact you may be able to work our a more democratic way to mediate such decisions and thus avoid the worst case scenarios where one rogue employer insists the program is never finished").

I hope you'll drop in and tell give us an update every once in a while

Hi arunpawar,
I think that the developer of SkyIde (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=4966.0), uses the component and hangs out here a lot, you might send him a message about it.
