General Software Discussion / Re: Ribbon vs. Toolbar, round 2

Thanks Michael. Since version 9 of UltraEdit, it's my primary "word" processor. I cajoled Ian (UltraEdit's developer for those who don't know) into adding and keeping a few text/writer-friendly features in the program. Like you, I compose everything from emails to Word docs to reviews to code in UltraEdit, and then just cut and paste into the container app.

Wow, thanks mouser! If you ask me, websites should have PAD files. As a little reviewer, I love a PAD file because it sorts through the misinformation I might pick up along the way reading everything BUT what the author establishes about their program/s.

I agree. There are others out there, but this one is bullet-proof.

Man, I need these sites, thanks for the links. I'm not a miser, but if I got it, I spend on something, and I always have something to show for it — software, computer hardware, rakes, ladder, tools, whatever. I don't blow it, but I find a place for any extra money I have.

When the Holodeck arrives, sex between bio-humans will be over. I figure most people will choose virtual partners. Dibs on Salma Hayek and Lucy Liu!

Living Room / Money tips for Students — much needed advice!
« Last post by zridling on September 01, 2006, 06:40 PM »
Tired of eating noodles every other week? Too poor to buy that lapdance, or do you find yourself staring at the counter, deciding whether to spend your last $5-spot on candy or fast food? The Get Rich Slowly blog has some solid Money Tips for Students that I wish I'd had back in the day.

It's worth perusing this advice. For people like me who never learned how to manage money (I have no excuse except that I never had any money to "manage" and still don't), I wish I'd known the things this blog dispenses. Instead I was happy to eat one meal a day during college, usually a box of macaroni and cheese, which I inhaled and salivated over like Homer Simpson. As a result, to this day I swear as Scarlett O'Hara:

As God is my witness, as God is my witness they're not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again. No, nor any of my folk. If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill. As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again!

Heck no, it's not cheating, it's modding! Most of the married women I know do consider it cheating and tend to snoop on the husband's computer for any hint of nudity. However, virtual sex (or cybersex) is first and foremost safe sex, assuming you don't meet anyone in person, that is. Porn is mainly a male thing, because it satisfies fantasy needs and is a quick fix. Women generally tend to approach sex through romance, or even the fantasy of romance (if you haven't read a romance novel lately, you'd be surprised how much raw porn occurs in 320-420 pages).

Last note: both my brothers are "not allowed" to have anything sexual on their computers. Their wives think it's a threat to them somehow. If you're not in the chat rooms, or various groups intending to meet someone in person, however, I can't see the problem.

Good find, abhishek_del. Microsoft's Virtual Desktop Manager is on their Powertoys page, third from the bottom, but is limited to four desktops. RJ, PowerPro is a nice and different, more direct approach.

This should be fun, and I'll try to catch up to the August reviewers I promised after running into some unexpected legal costs last month.

Even though I'm told it's a no-no, I love the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. It's updated frequently, otherwise I'd just download and install the codecs individually.

Ken, have you found many downloadable books yet? I spent some time with this today and there was little to be found before 1926. Everything I searched was a link to an Amazon or BN.com book. Why do I need google to look at 3 previewed pages of any new book when Amazon already does that?

Touchè, mrainey, touchè! But you have to throw me a bone on both sources — myself (completely unreliable) and MicroSuck, er, Microsoft (proven instigator and daily agitator).

nudone, have you tried AOL lately or iTunes in the past few years? If not, meet me in the parking lot and let me slam the car door on your hand several times. Not only will you take up loud cursing, you'll know what it feels like to install those disasters on your system.  :D

Renegade, how about an "install/uninstall" section? Oh Vishnu, don't get me started on apps that toss a hundred or more entries to the Registry!

General Software Discussion / Need Virtual Desktop software recommendations
« Last post by zridling on August 31, 2006, 01:32 AM »
Trying to find some good Virtual Desktop apps and am wondering what you'd recommend. Here's the three I've been using:

      — Virtual Dimension (Open Source)
      — VirtuaWin (Open Source)
      — Dexpot (Personal Freeware/Business shareware)

I'm too the point where I need this software! Once you start using it, you can't live without it.

Thanks for the tip on Squeez archiver, Black Mamba! Also to App103. I inadvertantly added a freeware tag to it. I've paid for several 602 licenses, so I know that's not true, but I didn't catch it. Thanks for looking after me.

Received some good feedback already on things to add to the "front page" such as links to download sites and other things.

I blame my dad. I grew up helping him fix the car and every time he'd slip and smash his hand, which was often — he'd bellow out long strings of curses that were musical. Let's say he had good diction to say the least!

Except for live preview, I've yet to see any real advantage to Office 2007, which obscures the programs' power features. Been using the beta since it was released and god I hate the freakin' ribbon. It's like computing for 5-year-olds.

General Software Discussion / MetaLink — another time/space-saving idea
« Last post by zridling on August 28, 2006, 06:01 PM »
If you're not using MetaLink to download your software (if you're a dev), then maybe it's time. What an overdue idea. Torrentfreak has the best explanation:

We’ve all seen those download pages where a couple of http, ftp and bittorrent mirrors are listed. We often just pick one of there, but wouldn’t it be great if you could use them all at the same time?... Metalinker has the solution. It works like this, the .metalink file tells your download manager where it can get the file, and connects to these different sources at the same time.

General Software Discussion / Comparison of Web Browsers (Wikipedia)

Here's a thorough comparison of web browsers at Wikipedia:

Lots of tabled info, included the version or date when lots of browsers died. I was wondering why I couldn't update Mosaic anymore!

Renegade, this is brilliant. I often devolve into cursing on my blog — for example, in this bombastic post — so I'm guessing Shitware will become wildly popular within a year — especially after Vista hits the streets!

You can change it to black or silver, and I think when it's released, several other colors.

I'm sure there's been many of these around, but here is a nice donationware Matrix Screensaver that mimics the one in the movie, even sending you messages if you want. Well done.
