ah.. crosshair nudge.. interesting idea.. hadn't even occured to me.  i'll look into it.

ps. after you select you can nudge the selection left and right and grow it left and right (or expand from center), using the alt/ctrl/shift modifiers with cursor keys.

General Review Discussion / Re: Customised Reviews???
« Last post by mouser on September 11, 2007, 02:10 PM »
I still think that instead of saying this is the best or this is the worst, you should just focus on what features the program has and comment on whether those features are implemented well or not.  Let the reader decide on what is important to him, and choose based on that.

This is much of the motivation to moving to a new kind of review system.

It's a bit ironic since when i started DC and started doing reviews, one of my motivations for the reviews was to be more decisive in recommending the best programs, since i found that too many reviews left me with a feeling like "how do i choose between programs?", and i wanted to help save people some time by saying "ok we've tried *everything* and here is what we recommend."

but looking at the reviews it's clear that often there is no way to recommend a single "best" program -- you may be able to identify the top 5 but after that it's really hard, and as these programs improve the ability to distinguish the rank of the top 5 or so becomes even more perlious.

so this dilemna is part of what has motivated the thoughts about writing a new review system.  i'm not quite ready to get into detailed discussion about features, but rest assured that when we begin serious planning, everyone on the dc forum will be asked to help us figure out the best design choices to make.

I completely understand why you need this, and we need to make sure such things work, so please don't give up getting it to work.
(you can email me at [email protected] if i don't keep following up and making sure this will work).

I think you should be able to write simply like this in your alias results and search folders:

\Portable Apps\Open Office Portable\

or just add \ as a search directory

that really should work and refer to the root drive where FARR is running, BUT if that does not work, i can either:
1) make it work in the next version
or
2) add a new macro variable like %FARRDRIVE% which refers to the drive that farr is running from.

i think #1 would be preferable.

the mousewheel scrolling might have been an ideal case.. having 2 global hotkeys to enlarge or reduce the size of the circle would be almost as good.. just an idea though not saying it's a critical feature.

This is one of the kinds of things being considered for the big review system we are considering implementing.

Congratulations App, that's just wonderful and well deserved

Every time I see InstantBoss mentioned somewhere I get a smile because it's a perfect example of one of the things that makes the DonationCoder.com forum so fun.  For those of you who don't know the history of this program, it started as a request on our Coding Snacks section, which evolved based on user suggestions to the program you see today, and was a fun experience for everyone involved.

If you are a user of InstantBoss, please consider sending app a couple of donationcredits to say thank you:

email me so we can try some stuff and then post what we find.  even in the worst case scenario, as you said deleting the database files and restarting should unquestionably fix the issue and not result in any of these errors.

this looks like it could be a great alternative with some extra functions -- plus it offers multiple margins which is something people have asked for in the past.

I could add #1 quite easily.. though keep in mind that PNG is lossless so gives you no degradation with small screenshot size.

For #2, i'll look into how fast i can make it, though if you really need to capture fast changing screen, you should probably use a screencast tool (see our review of such tools here: https://www.donation...enCasting/index.html).

This is something that could be very useful to you if you have an ftp account somewhere, because it automates not just the uploading, but the generation of links to share with others.  A great alternative to using a free (image) hosting site if you have your own ftp.

It's also got some very useful options like automatic thumbnail construction, and more.

This is a donationware program, so if you use it, please consider sending the author a donation to support his work!!

ps. this would be a perfect program to use with Screenshot Captor -- so that you can upload your images to an ftp simply by right-clicking on the images in the thumbnail browser.

RightLoad is a small program that allows you to quickly upload files directly from a Windows folder to your server. Instead of using a complicated FTP client just to upload a few pictures, you just right-click on the files, select the server and target folder and RightLoad will do the rest for you. When all files have been uploaded, RightLoad will automatically generate a list of different links to the files, ready to be copied into your post or website.

Options:

  • When file exists: Before a file is uploaded, RightLoad will check if a file by that name already exists. If this is the case, you can either overwrite the old file, rename it or cancel that upload. If you do not want RightLoad to ask you what to do every time ('Ask') you can set a default action here.
  • Use passive mode with FTP servers: This is a recommended setting, as it avoids problems that may occur with firewalls or routers. Passive mode prevents the server from trying to establish a connection back to you when uploading.
  • When I'm uploading a picture...: This is the default action to be taken when uploading a picture. Use this to disable the thumbnail dialog and always/never create them.
  • Thumbnail width/height: Here you can set the maximum dimensions of generated thumbnails. The original image's aspect ratio will always be kept, so the actual size of the thumbnails may differ.
  • Show image dimensions in thumbnails: This will add a white bar at the bottom of thumbnails, in which the dimensions of the original image will be displayed.
  • Frame thumbnail: This will put a 1px wide black border around all thumbnails.
  • Show RightLoad in context menu: Here you can choose if you want RightLoad to show up in your Explorer's context (right-click) menu. If disabled, you can only use RightLoad via the Send To menu.
  • Create log file: If you are experiencing problems with RightLoad, this option might help you find the cause. It will log all uploads to a file called log.txt in the program directory.
  • Don't show URLs, just close when done: If you don't want RightLoad to create links for you, you can use this option to make RightLoad close itself as soon as the upload is completed.

1) When selecting from tray menu, the selected menu text is left on the screenshot - see screenshot002

yep, this is a known problem i will fix in next version if i can remember -- doesn't happen with hotkey trigger.

2) "delete object" in editor objects menu is always grayed out,

i'll check into this, as you probably know you can use delete key but yes the edit menu needs to work too.

3) undo and object selection are still poorly implemented
undo for object is not great, i admin, i'll see what i can do.  ps. if you are in non-object mode and want to select an object you probably know this but if you dont, you can either double click an object to switch into object mode and select it, or press the object button (arrow with O on toolbar) to switch into object select mode.

4) cursor "nudge" was (I think I read) fixed but still doesn't work here
it works in non-object mode on region size and position -- looks like i need to add it now to object manipulation mode.  good idea

6) the "hidden" selection modes under "edit" - why no toolbar button with "multiple choice" like the "resize image" button

good idea, i'll add it.

one thing that might be really cool for these programs is, scroll wheel to zoom size of circle.

DesktopCoral / Re: problems
« Last post by mouser on September 11, 2007, 01:02 AM »
as far as resetting it's size -- it may be that there is a bug that is causing it to not save settings until it is exited, and that a system reboot/shutdown isn't triggering this.  try setting the size as you want, and then exiting the program completely, then restarting.  that should solve the problem of it remembering size.  maybe trying running it as an admin once to do this.

as for the other bugs, do they only happen in vista?

sorry you must put your alias subdirectory inside one of the 2 aliases.  For normal users they should put it in the "AliasGroups\Installed\" directory.  For you, the author, you could put it in "AliasGroups\MyCustom\" so that you can edit it.

the reason for these two different alias directories is to distinguish alias files that should be updated on install or upgrade, and alias files that the user may customize and so should NOT be updated automatically.

yes you need to restart farr -- or just open options and close options.
i'll be adding a simpler way to tell farr to rescan alias files, like from the tray menu, etc.

yes, you've got it.

(and of course if you wanted to use the alias dosearch trick, then your fos.alias file would have 2 aliases in it.)
