Personally I love the basic approach of Outpost, and i just like almost everything about it and i think they've set the high bar in terms of logging, interface, etc.  I just wish they would concentrate a little more on stability and performance.

I finally upgraded to outpost v4, and some of the features are really nice.

However, it frequently eats up half my cpu cycles for no apparent reason and drags my computer to a virtual stand still.  not cool.  i've just about had it with outpost and i'm ready to find something else.

we disabled setting post icons -- this way there is less visual clutter.
but i do agree that maybe poll posts should have a dif icon.

Living Room / Flash Game of the Week: Flash Portal
« Last post by mouser on October 13, 2007, 11:33 AM »
One of the more talked about games recently is a game by Valve called Portal, which is kind of a fps 3d puzzler.

Well here is an unofficial fan-created 2d-version of portal which plays quite well, even if it starts a little slow.

« Last post by mouser on October 13, 2007, 10:57 AM »
Just a note: the word "competition" is a bit misleading here..
The object isn't to try hard to draw the best Cody picture.  The object is simply to participate and draw Cody, no matter how crap your skills are.  Then Cody will pick the picture that means the most to him.

i'll try to fix the bug so it doesn't but try this quick workaround:
Do File->Select printer, and select a printer.  It should be remembered for next time and thus hopefully stop complaining?

Mircryption / Re: Auto Key-Exchange in Query?
« Last post by mouser on October 13, 2007, 05:17 AM »
nice first try!
a problem is that if you speak to someone without mircryption or fish it's going to try to do a key exchange with them every time they say anything.

a nice solution would be to set a persistent variable (or hash entry) like %autokeyx_USERNAME (where USERNAME is the name of the person, i.e. $3) whenever you do the mckeyx in your routine, and only try they mckeyx if the variable for the user is not set yet.  that way, it will only ever try it once per user.

Works and looks beautiful too.

Bug report:
  • The bunny is a little overeager.. the tray balloon saying "TimerAssist is Activated" seems to pop up on its own every 2 seconds or so once activated :)
  • Once I "Activate" it, the Deactivate button doesnt seem to do anything.

I wonder why there isnt any option to delete the previous attachments on a post modify action. I request moderator to remove top two TimerAssist.exe files from my last post.

can't you just modify the post and uncheck the attachments you know longer want attached? that's what i did to accomplish what you wanted.  if normal users can't do this let me know and i'll fix.

destiny_ruler, i love the icon for it, but when i run it i get an error:
"Error reading configuration. Application will close now."

i have .net 2.x installed, not sure of exact version #.

i guess i belong to the minority (perhaps not on dc but elsewhere) who have not warmed up much to this online-application trend.

however, if you look at the trends in online web services, they seem to be quietly doing more and more on your local pc (javascript, etc.).  i suspect that the future won't really be a move from local desktop applications to online applications (the way some people think things are trending), but much more of a transparent blend. doing sort of what java was meant to do but in a more efficient and transparent way, so that most stuff will be happening locally, but the internet enabled functionality will be transparent and offer up new functionality without you even notice its happening through the web.

i think part of this move will happen when we get programming languages that seamlessly bridge local execution with remote execution and information transfer.

General Software Discussion / What are your top 10 Tech/Software Blogs?
« Last post by mouser on October 12, 2007, 10:21 AM »
Martin from ghacks.net (which was awarded our best site of the month in May 2007) has started a little experiment asking his favorite blog-type sites (DC is one) to list their 10 favorite tech/software blogs.

So I thought I would start out with my personal 10, and then we can have a thread here where people can add their own recommendations as well.

My 10, in no particular order:

  • Cybernetnews - one of the absolute best bang for the buck in terms of quality content at an increasingly impressive pace of updates.  right now i'd say this is one of the very top (if not *the* top) software site for Windows users to visit every day.
  • ghacks - similar to cybernetnews in content and spirit
  • Freeware World Team - one of the lesser appreciated sites that reports on a volume of new small indie freeware tools that other sites should be envious of.  i wake up each morning hoping that they are still doing what they are doing - they actively go out and find new small freeware tools you won't hear about anywhere else.
  • Freeware Genius - very nice short reviews of cool freeware.
  • DownloadSquad - downloadsquad has been slacking a bit lately but they are a first class top-of-the-line software blog, no doubt about it.
  • Shell Extension City - a few freeware tools featured each day.  again this is pushing the edge of what would be considered a blog, but it's one of the longest-running most consistent source of finding out about cool freeware for windows.
  • JayIsGames.com - for my daily fix of casual flash games.  i don't really have time to play games but i love visiting jay's site once a day to see if there is something new and fun to spent 10 minutes on.  and i like how they bring attention and offer a platform for indie coders.
  • Wired Blogs - there are quite a few blogs here and they are all occasionally original in ways that most other blogs aren't.
  • Coding Horror - my favorite programming-related blog.  Jeff Attwood is one of my favorite writers in this genre and most of what he writes is for a general audience and easy to read and entertainingly opinionated.
  • Gadgetopia - nice original essays and reporting on software / web services / technology.

So what are yours?

ps. note that i read tons and tons of blogs, and it wasn't easy picking just 10, so if i left you out it doesn't mean i don't love your blog!

my experience has been that you can detect scams on first contact.

in the case of your customer, i suspect everything is fine and on the up-and-up, and you're just experiencing the normal uncertainties and delays of business as usual.

Well i usually write a long expository piece on finding a project to motivate you, etc., but for me the idea of learning a language without using a book just seems insane.  A good book is a good friend.

where there are errors in reviews brought to my attention, i will correct them.
the long term solution is what i've said already, a different kind of review system that makes it much easier to keep these things up to date and free of errors.

Site/Forum Features / Re: DonationCredits Discussion
« Last post by mouser on October 11, 2007, 06:40 PM »
Some time ago we decided to do an experiment an give donors 100% control of their donation credits, and not automatically apply any of it to the site.

When you activate your credits the site recommends you consider giving 50% of your donation to the site account, but it's no longer mandatory.

Enough people give enough to the site that we decided to stick with this method.  It means that while we strongly ask for you to give some of your donations to the site, you are free to make a donation and give all of your credits to dc members whose work you want to support.

In fact, this change was especially motivated by people like you who might make a repeat donation to the site specifically because they want to support members on the site individually

(note that the reason you go $26.61 in credits instead of $28 is because paypal takes their cut off the top).

let's not get into a discussion on how to fix the reviews again here, only because there is a plan in place for how to do reviews 2.0 and there will be a time and place to discuss this as it nears implementation.

A completely new revamped donationcoder review system is in planning stages.  No point discussing it now but it is coming sometimes in 2008.
