the best idea i can think of is to uninstall winpcap and try different versions of it from the winpcap site. if you could find another winpcap program that does work that would tell us a lot.

Joel is a very good writer but it seems in the last year or two the only thing he ever writes about is pure self-promotion. i miss the more general insightful posts he used to make but at this point i don't even bother checking out his blog.
at least he hasn't gotten as bad as robert scoble yet

ps. We owned that 300 baud acoustic modem pictured in the first post, and it worked great. you dial the number with your phone, wait for it to start whining "eeeeeeeeeeee" and then mash the receiver down onto it. to my eyes it's a beautiful thing.

In all fairness to Ron, it can be so much work responding to requests and posts on a forum. One can understand how it would be a difficult choice between closing a forum, which obviously upsets some people vs. keeping it open but not having the time to reply to everyone's request for help - and therefore leaving the impression that the company doesn't care.
Of course it would have been good to give the forum members a generous advance warning about the change, then at least people would have had time to adjust to the idea and not assumed the worst.

I think veign makes some great points. This is one of those cases where the extra work up front both serves to protect you *and* will convey to the other person that you are a professional and know what you are doing. You may increase your price based on preparing a proposal or quote, but it's bound to be worth the time.

i've got 30 todo cards for FARR in front of me, so i'm working on it (except when cat tries to scatter them onto the floor); i'm trying to get a last set of bugfixes and updates this week.
