General Software Discussion / Re: What would your ideal Operating System be like?
« Last post by Darwin on August 20, 2008, 09:27 AM »
PS +1 to point number 8 in nontroppo's post:

Hardware agnostic. Yes, I'm looking at you OS X! Though I don't want Apple to get mired in the driver hell of Windows and Linux, I want to be able to run it where I want. Apple should keep making drivers only for its hardware, and let the hackers do the rest as has sustained Linux for many years.

Nice post, nontroppo  A significant problem moving between OSX and Windows (2k, XP and Vista) is the need to adjust how you think about folder structure, programme installation, etc. The funny thing, as I've come to realise, is that I've gotten so used to the (relative) complexity of the program files folder, common files folder, registry and  various user settings folders in Windows that I get frustrated by OSX - I guess I don't trust its simplicity!

As an extension of the above point, I also find that with OSX it's more a case of the philosophy behind the decisions made about where to locate settings than a case of the settings being hidden or unavailable - I've gotten so used to MS' way of doing things that it's become fixed in my thinking and when I encounter alternatives, they grate. I still get very irritated using OSX, but I am coming to appreciate that it is simply a learning process. Anyway, I wouldn't have agreed with you about the UI on OSX a year ago, but I think you're right now... it's uniform and inobtrusive. I'm getting my iBook back this week (it shuttles back and forth between me and my father and has been gone for about three months) and am looking forward to re-acquainting myself with it - I've spent the last two weeks with Vista (and have been surprised at how much I've enjoyed it -although the UAC, even in Sp-1, is annoying) and XP Pro. I've been trying to give Ubuntu 8.1 and whirl but neither of the ISO's I've burned to disk will run "live" on any of my three machines, so I'll have to install it...

AFAICT there is no RSS feed for the new web forum. Not really a big deal, but still... Anyway, I'll just bookmark it and visit when I have a question. Thanks!

People with thousands invested in programs would be wise to have 1 or more full backups of the entire system.
Worth the price of a duplicate Hard Drive of the same size imo.

Cheeky monkey  ;D I do image my HD daily - keeps me from a lot of grief! Of course, it was a hard-learned lesson... Actually, it was mouser's review of imaging and backup software that brought me to DC a few years ago. Of course, I had already purchased both Acronis TrueImage and Genie Backup Manager Pro and missed on what could have been my first DC discounts! Interesting that over that period of time, Genie Backup Manger Pro has introduced the ability to image a harddrive and Acronis TrueImage the ability to backup individual files and folders... FWIW, today I use Acronis TrueImage and Super Flexible File Synchronizer... GBM Pro has been relegated to the digital scrap heap (for now).

Thanks, Chris (I think  :o)!

Thanks for the link MWB1100! This doesn't bother me that much, either, as I tend to just run 4NT, which does open instantaneously

PS What happened to the jpsoft newsgroup? I used to read it in my newsreader and then it just disappeared about a month ago?

We were certain that it was the chauffeur.

Accomplice...

BTW... I did wind up upgrading to TCC9. As documented throughout this forum, I have a severe case of upgrade-itis  :o PromptPal and PowerCMD have both been banished to my digital junk collection (for now)!
2535
PS I'm sure there is some command line instruction that you can invoke to automate this (ie skip the read-only files and continue with the deletion of everything else), but I'm too rusty on my command line syntax to even know how to begin...

Good luck!

Our current fav is Battlestar Galactica (no spoilers please, we're only in season 2)

The butler did it...

Hi BC5, I'd delete the old files that you CAN delete and leave the read-only ones alone. Unfortunately, this means that you'll have to make a note of each read-only file as the error messages appear and not select them during the next delete run...

Just an update: on my new Vista notebook with 3GB RAM, Take Command Console 9 opens INSTANTLY. There's obviously something wrong with my XP machine (on which it takes upwards of 10 seconds to open). Strange...

Thanks for letting us know, Pierre! Hope he is safe AND enjoying his visit... My father wound up in hospital for a week when he was there (bug he caught in Vancouver, NOT Cuba!).

Hmmm... lately I've been using X1 Pro pretty much exclusively after having been "off" it for about a year - they seem to have fixed the glitches that plagued me earlier and I've had no problems with it over the three or so months since I reinstalled it.

I always find Copernic "ok" - it should be great, but it never really does it for me when I install it and use it somehow.

FileLocator Pro is great for filename searches but on my antiquated notebook it is EXCRUTIATINGLY slow on content searching - it doesn't create an index... It's good for content searching if you really narrow down the search parameters, like only doc files in a specific folder or something, though.

Overall, my suggestion would be to hope that X1 gets back to you, making it possible for you to purchase it. I've no other suggestions, free or in your price range as my experience is limited to: Archivarius, X1 (and Yahoo Desktop Search), Filehand Search, Copernic, Windows Desktop Search (have you tried version 4? People do seem to like it), dtSearch, and a brief dabble with Google Desktop Search.

Funny, I suspect the OP was either spamming this board (to generate some interest in the app s/he was "looking" for a serial for) OR wasn't being that naughty:

Need license key for XoftSpy XE by Pareto Logic...can be a trial offer to scan and clean.

What is interesting about InputDirector is that most of my usb units work on other computer like external usb volume dial and my wacom tablet.

Ooh, aah! Now I can't wait to get home to try it out (if family committments don't get in the way - we're going camping tomorrow morning)...

The nearest academic library is about 40 miles away

40 miles away? Luxury! (My dad is a Yorkshireman... but the blame should really be directed at another Yorkshireman, Michael Palin).

Input Director looks cool... : have to admit that I've always been completely mystified by how these types of applications work - do you need some sort of a physical switch? Does this simply work across a network? Now I see from the FAQ on the Input Director site (can't think why I didn't bother following up on these questions long ago) that it works over a network. Definitely cool, and I'll definitely be giving it a whirl.

Thanks TPReal
