Another outrageous scam targeted at people who don't know any better.
I would avoid purchasing anything from such companies if at all possible.

This is a known problem with game capturing, whose solution is probably to use a different program for such things.
See these for suggestions:

As f0dder says, your circumstance as you describe it, is not going to be helped by this program.  It sounds like you have a different kind of problem.. someone is getting hold of your credit card in some other way -- using this program is not going to solve that.

ps. Even if they are getting it from your computer, it's not through any means that this program will help -- it's more likely to be because you have some trojan program or something installed on your computer, which this program will not find -- you are better off making sure you have a good antivirus tool.

Just speaking from my memory of this program, I think i remember that it is a reasonably good program [see SKA's links below].

HOWEVER!!!

It is insanely priced and looks like they are marketing it as something special.  It's really just one of a lot of tools that do the same basic thing, none of which are anywhere near that price point.

And the web page is really hyping it.. But notice there is no forum, no information about when it was last updated, etc.  I wouldn't consider buying it myself.

For a similar free program: http://www.ccleaner.com/
And also: http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/

The one piece of criticism that i have is that the images could be more professional..
I know it sounds trivial but in the modern day these things sort of jump out at people and can lead to a snap judgement about whether a site is professional or not.

I would try adding drop shadows to them, and see if you cant make the stuff on the right look a little more professional, while still being fun for kids.
25157
That's very messed up.

I found this a nice summary from a developer's perspective about the security of sessions and cookies..
It's focued on PHP but is relevant no matter what web language you use.

One of the most vast misconceptions in the PHP world is how sessions really do work. I'm fairly confident most of us know how to start sessions, terminate sessions, regenerate session IDs and easily pass data from 1 page to another. But do you really know how they work inside out?

25159
I think the point here is to help you create a standalone application that you could give to a client or a worker, so that they can use your tool like a standalone application without being overwhelmed.

Developer's Corner / Re: Best way to start learning C++?
« Last post by mouser on October 27, 2007, 06:42 PM »
But if you take away the VCL (Visual Component Library, the GUI component library, for those that aren't familiar with Delphi and BCB), not many advantages are left - and the VCL isn't something you want to start with if your goal is to learn the C++ language and become proficient in it.

agreed 100%.

I dunno if VCL can even be used with other C++ compilers than Borland's?
nope.  and this is a real downside to using it.

Veign wrote on his blog today about a super cool roundup of 100 photoshop brushes, as listed on a site called PhotoshopRoadmap.com.

When i went and checked out the site I found a bunch of great tutorials and resource collections.. Even as someone who doesn't use photoshop I was impressed.

There you are, traitor.  I can see you now.

hahahaha great line!

Ralf you might need to make a website and a blog so you can share more stories and stuff. I really enjoyed it.

Wapache is a software that lets you to create desktop applications using web development technology. It combines a modified version of the Apache 2 HTTP server with an embedded Internet Explorer web browser. Requests to the "web server" are handled internally. Data does not travel through the networking layer, ensuring quick response and reliable operation. Wapache also lets you control various browser settings, such as window dimensions and Javascript availability, giving you a consistent runtime environment.

I happen to love Borland's C++ Builder, which now goes by the name CodeGear's Turbo C++ (confusing history of name changes) which is basically C++ with a layer of GUI components that make it an extremely enjoyable way to build very substantial windows applications.

The one thing that was mentioned above and needs to be emphasizes is that this visual component system is a windows-only solution.  Which is a terrible shame and should give you pause before learning it.  wxWidgets and Qt are the cross-platform equivelent, although i don't find them nearly as enjoyable to use, nor are comprehensive.

I'm not sure i would recommend any of these to a new learner -- better to focus on the core C++ language and now mess with any of these GUI libraries are first.

It's a good point carol.  In fact in the corporate world this "trick" is employed so much it's kind of sick.  If a company's reputation suffers too much or they need to do something against previous promises, OR if the CEO massively embezzles stockholder funds, the solution is usually to change the name of the company, merge into another company, or replace the CEO and say "that was the old Company X, we are now company Y and we don't have any obligations or responsibilities based on what company X did.  Quite a nice scam they have going.

Anyway, no big business has ever contacted me expressing interest in buying DC and it seems very unlikely that something like that will ever come up. DC doesn't make enough for anyone to care, and i don't want to sell it.  I have too much fun with you guys.  If anything, I think there is a good chance DC will apply for official non-profit status in the future.

But the main thing protecting you from such an event is that this is a community site -- no big changes will be made without consulting with you guys first and getting approval.  Your email is your own, we have never shared member emails with anyone and won't.

The Free Download A Day Site (http://www.freedownloadaday.com/) highlighted a site that i think we have mentioned before on DC but it's worth a repeat mention as it seems to be improving.

On the site you can download pdf files for all kinds of graph paper, as well as check out a ton of online graph paper creator tools that will create custom graph paper to your specifications.

You'll also find online tools for creating simple calendars or labels.  Nice.

ps. Donations are requested (and deserved!)

there are a lot of disposable email services.
but i think it would be much more useful to have a way of knowing which websites are selling their email lists, as a way of deciding which websites you should trust.

Living Room / Teach Yourself to Program in Our Programming School
« Last post by mouser on October 26, 2007, 02:13 PM »
Before DonationCoder.com ever existed I set up a forum where some very beginning C++ programmers could get some inspiration to keep learning and some feedback on their initial attempts at writing code.

I myself learned to program by teaching myself from books, and I used to love the "teach yourself" series of books, so my aim was to reproduce the fun of those books.

The idea I came up with to motivate them was to design a series of exercises, or challenges, starting simple but getting increasingly more complicated.  Assignments are little self-contained programs they have to write, most are fun little games, and most have bonuses for those who need an extra challenge.

One key idea is that you can't see the next assignment until you complete the previous one, which seems to really help motivate completion of challenges.  In addition to unlocking the next challenge, once you complete a challenge you'll get a little feedback, and be able to see how other people solved the problem, and talk with them about the different approaches.

When I started DonationCoder I created a Self-teaching Programming School section on DC, but now instead of just C++, we have over a dozen different sections on languages from Autohotkey to C# to Delphi to Python to Ruby, etc.  And of course C++.

We will keep adding challenges to any section so you'll never run out.  And we've already had a handful of people who earned badges by completing 10 challenges in a stage and making it past the boss challenge.  It seems that even some experienced coders have actually enjoyed the challenges and seeing how well they can code them..

Anyway, this post is just an invitation to stop by the programming school if you haven't already, and you feel like trying to teach yourself some programming.  Everyone is welcome, regardless of age or ability, and you can simply proceed at your own pace.  Remember that we don't provide actual instruction here, we just try to help motivate you and guide you with some challenges -- the rest is up to you and your favorite programming book.

Find And Run Robot / Re: [bugs report] here is a list of outstanding bugs
« Last post by mouser on October 26, 2007, 12:16 PM »
warning the user for duplicate alias names is not a bad idea, i'll put that on my todo list.

As you saw, Josh took this idea for a summary bug list and really ran with it in a nice way so that now all of my major programs has such a list which can be thought of as a kind of bugtracker (https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=10533.0).

Prism, which is based on (or used to be called?) WebRunner is basically a tool for making a simplified standalone program which is basically a web browser (FireFox) locked to a specific website or service, with a simplified user interface.

It has some interesting possibilities from a developer's standpoint.  Coders have actually been able to build applications out of the mozilla framework, including the browser component, for a long time.. But this seems to be on a course to streamline that process.

My only real concern is the huge memory footprint of firefox and startup time, etc.

Mozilla Labs is launching a series of experiments to bridge the divide in the user experience between web applications and desktop apps and to explore new usability models as the line between traditional desktop and new web applications continues to blur.

Unlike Adobe AIR and Microsoft Silverlight, we’re not building a proprietary platform to replace the web. We think the web is a powerful and open platform for this sort of innovation, so our goal is to identify and facilitate the development of enhancements that bring the advantages of desktop apps to the web platform.

The first of these experiments is based on Webrunner, which we’ve moved into the Mozilla Labs code repository and renamed to Prism.

Living Room / Re: How Google earns money?
« Last post by mouser on October 26, 2007, 04:31 AM »
Sometimes it seems to be that half of the blogs on the internet are devoted to talking about how much money google makes so this is kind of a weird question.

Google makes money as a middleman, by charging companies money to show their ads to people.

PERIOD.

Everything else google does is designed to increase their ability to do just that.  All of their other projects are designed simply to get their advertisements in front of new users, and keep the stock market excited about their products so people will keep advertising with them.

Nothing else they do has to make money as long as they continue to get good publicity and maintain their huge share of the search engine and advertising market.
