welcome to the site vitalyb, and thanks for the nice words.

and if you think this name is bad --- hahahaah wait till you see the names of my other programs -- some are far worse and have become the butt of many jokes.

Just call it FARR (for Find and Run Robot) and life is easier

i still say thats a bug -- you shouldnt have to put any regular expression in there, it should work right away.
and i should make the noresults entry a default in the myaliases file so users can more easily configure it.

thanks for not giving up

nitrix to the rescue.
ok so perlguy for what you want just put $$1 in results, and use what nitrix said for alias name and regex.

ps. i'm going to split off the noresults discussion into its own thread.

ps2. for those who don't know about the noresults thing, it's how you can tell farr what to do when you type something and there are no results and you hit enter.

TucknDar basically has it.

If you look at 2006, you can see back then we were much more "structured" about the GOE, and had weekly assignments:
https://www.donation...ndex.php?board=196.0

But this time it's really about people taking charge of themselves, and spending the next two months devoting themselves to becoming more organized in their life and doing less procrastinating, etc.

all these ideas about ways to prevent being inundated by spam by using different email addresses are good ideas, no doubt about it. and surely we will see more developments in this area in the future.

however i should just point out that i'm really talking about something completely different -- a way to figure out which sites are trustworthy in general by seeing which sites share the email addresses of members.

It's a great lesson in terms of how important it is to look carefully at the incentives that any system provides.

As app says -- the last thing we want to encourage on DC is a kind of competition for "rewards" in whatever form.  That's the last thing we want.

I think we are much more interested in participation and teamwork.

That's why even in the case of the programming challenges I've tried hard to do things where everyone gets something.  And I think we should encourage that as much as possible.  Makes it a funner and better place for everyone.

this is a good idea.

You are definitely not the only person to request this recently.  I will really try to get this done in the next few days.

Before i do however, you might want to check out these similar programs which might already do it and be just want you want:

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2007 / Re: My System - Index Card Centric
« Last post by mouser on November 07, 2007, 10:20 AM »
My current system is that i have 5 of these black boxes that hold the cards (shown and linked to above).  The boxes are perfect because when they open they have a front area and back area which is really a nice way to have 2 sections in each box.

I use the front section to hold the newest cards or the ones im working on at the moment.

One box is just for new blank cards, so i know right where to go when i need a blank card for a new task.  I love these color coded cards but i haven't really developed a system where the colors mean something, though i am trying to shift to that.

I use paper clips to group cards together that are similar.

I originally had sections in one box for tasks for Today/Tomorrow/This Week/This Month/Long Term.  I think this is a nice idea but in practice i don't use it that much.

Instead i seem to mostly just organize things by project.  So i have a section for each of my computer programs, a section for ideas, a box for DC ideas/tasks, and a box for the new job i am working on, etc.

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2007 / Re: Here is my problem
« Last post by mouser on November 07, 2007, 10:15 AM »
My experience is that deadlines are very very important when you actually want to finish a project, so i do think you need to figure out a way to add deadlines to your projects in a way you can live with.

Well I keep thinking about a possible computer version of the card system.
Certainly it would be nice to be able to search and print.

However, having a tactile physical card to hold and organize has a more tangible impact.

My rule of thumb is avoid all combo-accessories (usb hubs, speakers, etc.) they tend to break or be sub-par or become obsolete and then it's annoying to have them attached to the main device.

I agree you should look into using a cms.  Much much easier to maintain.
Joomla and Drupal both won awards recently and that would be a good way to go, assuming you are sure you don't want to go with a blog-centric site.

General Software Discussion / Re: Does reliable PC security have to cost money?
« Last post by mouser on November 05, 2007, 05:43 PM »
Getting back to the original question:

I think your point was key -- an antivirus tool can't be good unless it is CONSTANTLY updated.  That basically rules out all amateur hobby solutions.

So basically if you want a good antivirus you are going to have to go with a product coming from a company that is making consistent income that they can afford to constantly be keeping it up to date at a fast pace.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean that you can't find such an antivirus tool that is free for home use, as some good commercial products make their money from commercial sales (for example AntiVir).

On the other hand, this might be one of those categories of programs where the proper question to ask yourself is something like:  Is it worth a few bucks a year for me to have the best program if it is a commercial product?

For me the answer is yes.  The cost of the best commercial antivirus and firewall tools are cheap enough and the importance is high enough, that i wouldn't take cost into consideration for this kind of product.

I have a pair of Samsung 204b lcd monitors.

Moving to lcds was one of the best things i did -- huge benefit in terms of desk space and no downsides.

I'm very happy with the samsungs, though i have to say after moving them to a new house after a year they both developed little areas of discoloration.

Personally i went for 2 side-by-side normal aspect ratio screens, rather than 1 widescreen.  the trend these days seems to be for widescreen, but i prefer 2 normals.

As far as not having things like usb ports, i wouldn't give that the slighted thought -- not important at all.
