General Software Discussion / Re: Do you use Desktop Widgets?
« Last post by mouser on November 11, 2007, 04:04 PM »
launchy and Find and Run Robot are not really widgets, at least by my way of thinking.
i was really thinking about desktop things that stay on screen and are usually part of a family of such things where you can choose which widget toys to show and where.

WorkCoach! that's the other dc one i was thinking of!  Yeah manuall switch would be nice -- through a tray menu perhaps?

And thanks Dormouse - i have ToDoList installed but haven't gotten around to using it yet -- didn't realize it could do this.

By the way this would be the perfect kind of utility for someone to code for the GOE Contest this month

I knew there was a dc small utility to do this but couldn't remember which.. there might even be another from the NANY project.

Actually TaskLog is very close to what i'm looking for.

TimeSnapper is indeed a nice looking program.. i keep wondering if i should make a similar simpler program out of my screenshot captor code.

However, i think that would be more appropriate for someone wanting to see a complete look at how they spend all their time.. I'm more interested in something where i can quickly click on tray to say "i'm working on project X now" and then "i've stopped working on project X" etc.

To help clarify what i'm interested in.. im more interested in properly billing people for time, rather than in figuring out what kinds of things i do on the computer.

I think this has come up before, but i couldn't find a good thread on it.

I want to do a more orderly job of tracking how much time i spend on each project.

  • I'm not really interested in a program that detects which programs i have open and assigns specific programs to specific projects
  • I am interested in something that lets me really easily manually switch between projects
  • Something that gives me good visual feedback about what project i am working on.
  • Makes reports suitable for text copy and paste

Any suggestions?

ProcessTamer / Re: Boost forground after taming
« Last post by mouser on November 10, 2007, 05:31 PM »
i think i understand what you are saying.

it sounds like a flaw in process tamer where it should boost it to high priority when in foreground but gets confused after taming it - i shall fix that.

I wonder if also it should ever tame a foreground process if you have foreground-boost enabled.  it seems to me it probably never should.

Living Room / The Dvorak Zine - fun comic telling story of the Dvorak keyboard
« Last post by mouser on November 10, 2007, 02:37 PM »
The history of the bad Qwerty keyboard we all use today is wonderfully bizarre.  It makes for great dinner conversation and is sure to boggle the minds of small children.  Here's a fun comic about the more logical Dvorak keyboard which tells that history and how the Dvorak keyboard came about.

The Dvorak Zine is a 24 page zine that uses the power of Comics to promote Dvorak. It is broken down into three chapters: 1) The history of the typewriter and the development of the QWERTY keyboard; 2) An explanation of the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard layout and its many benefits; and 3) Easy-to-follow steps for setting up Dvorak on your computer and tips on how to learn it!

Living Room / Re: To wide-screen or not to wide-screen
« Last post by mouser on November 10, 2007, 09:39 AM »
i think the point is valid though.

normally i think to myself: "the only thing i would want widescreen for is to watch movies, which i hardly ever do, so i don't need a widescreen display"

but now i see i should consider also the possibility that docked sidebars could be put in that extra space (whether they are ide sidebars or desktop sidebars, etc.).

id still rather have 2 monitors than one big widescreen any day of the week.  you have to actually use two monitors to see why maximizing apps on a single monitor is so important etc.  its not just about the extra screen real estate, it's also about having two independent desktop areas.
25065
barring such a program, you might be able to condigure a manually run sync/incremental backup tool using a shortcut to do almost the same thing.
25066
this is a terrific idea as i understand it.

something in between a program that automatically monitors and creates copies of changed files vs. a program that only checks and makes backups when run manually.

so it would always be monitoring.. and maybe show an icon when you could quickly bring it up and say "go" when you want, with easy ability to quickly mark files as not to be backed up, etc.

Living Room / Re: To wide-screen or not to wide-screen

I wonder how many of the resident "widescreen-haters" here uses applications that has sidebars/panels, like oh I don't know, just about every IDE available? Because if you do, I don't understand how you can stand using such programs on a 4:3, or even worse, 5:4 monitor. A dual-monitor setup can't help you with such things either, so a widescreen is the only reasonable solution.

really good point.. one of the reasons i dislike these new sidebar widgets is because of the screen real estate they use.. but i can see how using a widescreen monitor could basically eliminate that problem.  food for thought and good point.

Mobysaurus / Re: Too many synonyms, too many not relevant
« Last post by mouser on November 10, 2007, 07:40 AM »
cool idea.
i agree it would be nice to have some way to separate the higher-relevancy synonyms from the rest.
one way would be if there is another thesaurus database you could interface, and then mark works only found in one differently than those words found in both.

« Last post by mouser on November 09, 2007, 10:14 PM »
However, when I press ctrl+1 and I expect it to open C:\Program Files, it acts as if I pressed ctrl+2

Confirmed -- that's a bug.  Adding to todo list.

What it should do it autocomplete #1 if you havent fully typed it, OR open it if you already have the full text of it in the search box.  I'll try to have this fixed in a minor update next week.

I understand he is going to be in the hospital for a couple of weeks, so all postcards sent in the next week or so should get to him i think -- but i'll find out and update this post to make sure he will get them if they arrive within the next 3 weeks.

He will be in the hospital until December 1st, so if you send a postcard in the next week it will get to him fine.

Developer's Corner / Re: Implementing VoIP to a simple program...
« Last post by mouser on November 09, 2007, 05:17 PM »
There are some voip components for delphi/bcb and activex, but i don't have any experience with them:

http://www.vclcompon.../catalog/Delphi_Voip
http://www.torry.net/pages.php?id=207

I'd think hard about coding your own vs using an existing free tool, unless you really want to learn how to make such programs.

Oh the problem is incredibly real.
It was a terrible mistake to use the word "and" in a program name.
It's not clear whether its "Find And Run" or "Find+Run" or "Find&Run" etc.  Just stupid.  Not only that but i did it to 3 of my programs ("Clipboard Help+Spell", "Drag and Drop Robot").  And my lack of consistency does not help matters.

A version of this idea has been suggested a couple of times, but let's try to put it into practice now.

We have (another) one of our dearest members (especially if you visit the irc chat channel), JoTo, who is in the hospital recovering from a serious health scare.

So now is the time for all DC visitors, readers, lurkers, members, etc. to send JoTo a postcard:

Katharinenhospital
Jörg Töllner
Haus 7, Station C5, Zimmer 667
Kriegsbergstr. 60
70174 Stuttgart
GERMANY

ps. please write in large letters as he has diminished vision.  you don't have to write much more than "Hello" and it doesn't matter if you don't know him.  the point is just to bring him a little happiness with a postcard.

ps2. should we reply here after we have sent?

i think it's too late to rename these.

however, i agree that all future program names should be first vetted here or better yet, put to a vote.
