Living Room / Re: chrome browser is so nasty
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 20, 2015, 03:09 PM »
If Chrome works for you, by all means be happy with it. It isn't a bad browser at all.

I don't use it because of all the "We're watching you" stuff it comes with, just pointing out anything associated with Google, (Picasa, Google Earth, etc), is going to install that updater service.

Supposedly the chromium open source version has the monitoring removed or can be neutralized with about:config or command line switches.  I've been back with Firefox for awhile so this could have changed somewhat.  I was more concerned about the number of processes.  It seemed to like to launch something around the number of open tabs plus 4.  But there is a command line switch to set the max.  It seemed to run just as well for me with 1/2 dozen instances as 12.  But I don't put that much of a load on browsers.

I think of all the chrome variants chromium is most likely to have the monitoring stuff pointed out by users as some compile it themselves and look through the code.  Also there's an active discussion mailing list.

I believe Shades is correct about fast booting.  Also it may be helpful to post here:

I'm sure many there have put W8.x on W7 boxes with custom builds and huge drives.

I used chromium snapshots on Windows for a couple of years.  It was pretty well-behaved.  Best method is to download the win32 zip.  Even though these are snapshots many are quite stable.  The trick is, when you get one that runs well, back up the settings/profile folder and the one the executable is in, before trying a newer version.  The reason is, if a newer version introduces a new variable, then you run an older version without restoring the profile, it will give an error about unknown or corrupted data in the profile.

Chromium worked well for me.  The main reason I went back to Firefox is I missed certain AddOns.  Here's the link to the snapshot list:

http://commondatasto...index.html?path=Win/

Afa getting rid of old settings one thing you can try after uninstalling is run CCleaner Registry clean and fix all issues.  Make sure to save the backup as offered before fixing.  I think I only had one build of CCleaner that had a Registry Cleaner bug but it's a good precaution to save the reg file.

(I'm assuming you are talking the Windows version of chrome browser.)

@Deozaan  American actors from Raymond Burr on, should not be in Godzilla flicks.  Toho should make them themselves.  At this point, since the first Mathew Broderick version tried to make the thing "realistic" by spitting fire but no Heat Ray(tm) I have lost interest in any Godzilla produced in the English language.

The American flick has apparently served a purpose by nudging Toho to realize there's still a market.  Toho is supposed to pick up the series again.  I'll wait for those to be released.

I enjoyed Godzilla Final Wars.  There was a bit too much Alien fighting kung fu mumbo jumbo.  Those scenes reminded me a bit of the flick Wicked City  But City did it better.

As far as plot holes or logical flaws, I can't even bring myself to watch the video you posted since G 1998 had the bit with helicopters following the monster up and down streets instead of flying over the buildings.  Whenever I see that I want to switch ithe movie off right then.  I should have,  :)

I look forward to the real Toho releases to come.

The more I look at where Microsoft wants you to "go today" after Windows 7, the happier I am I made the switch to Linux. 8)

I noticed an article, 3 Ways to Run Normal Linux on a Chromebook

Maybe some people who would not ordinarily try Linux will come in through the back door if someone sets it up for them.

I want to give it another go when I can set up some desktops.  I notice just from playing in VMs it's not as frustrating as it used to be.  Some key bindings like for copy and paste are the same as Windows etc..

It has been my contention for some time that many quotes attributed to Albert Einstein were created by surreptitious government types in an effort to influence the behavior of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sixpack.

Putting aside the obvious examples for the moment, I have pasted below several quotes whose authenticity is suspect:

"No good weed goes unpunished."

-- Albert Einstein

"Where d' white wimmin' at?"

-- Albert Einstein

"Because that's where the money is."

-- Albert Einstein

"Bling goes better with Coke."

-- Albert Einstein

"I know what weapons the Third World War will be fought with.
But it's classified."

-- Albert Einstein

"Whistle while you work."

-- Albert Einstein

"She doth teach the torches to burn baby burn."

-- Albert Einstein

"Double your pleasure.  Double your fun.
With Doublemint, Doublemint, Doublemint gum."

-- Albert Einstein

"Talk's cheap.  I want action."

-- Albert Einstein

"No money.  No honey."

-- Albert Einstein

Also I have it from a reliable source that anything witty longer
than 2 sentences was actually penned by Professor Irwin Corey.  The
World's Leading Authority.

The therapeutic value of dark humor:

Why you would need the word when a speeding vehicle with flashing lights is behind you I don't know.

I have had a seriously fucked up day, but that darkly keen observation actually made me laugh for the first time today.

Thank you.

Thank you for the kind reply.  :)

I don't think an idea by itself has much effect.  It's not only what is said but who said it.

I suspect during the 50s and 60s in an effort to impress certain advice on people, many quotes were attributed to Albert Einstein.  It stands to reason that if other geniuses, like Woody Allen or Yogi Berra, only produced a dozen or fewer really pithy sayings, it's not likely Einstein uttered all that stuff under his name.  The name was synonymous with genius in those years.  That was promoted and exploited.

As a simple example, somebody came up with the idea to paint the word Ambulance backwards on the front of same so that drivers would see it the right way around in their rear view mirrors.  Why you would need the word when a speeding vehicle with flashing lights is behind you I don't know.  But I know if I thought of doing that everyone would say what a really stupid idea it was and not paint any ambulances as described.

Perhaps the person had an automotive painting business?

My guess is they don't bother to add another interface since you can open in a new window or tab, then drag from the addressbar to desktop.  I think there was a Firefox AddOn called DeskCuts or something.

I'm not sure how old it is or if it still works:

So...who owns the shark?

The FBI says it's North Korea.

Yes, and - being under alien (mind) control - they used alien technology to HacK the shark and make it attack the cable.

 :D

From the still I thought it was how you made a shot on a really large pool table if you don't have any hands.  ;)

It's unclear to me:
does it do dual-pane - or are the multiple panes always showing the same location?

Explorer windows get multi-tabbed, is the main feature.  I tried a mod version done by the other guy some time ago.  It seemed stable enough.  But the main thing that gripes me with these single pane multi-tabbed deals is I try to drag a bunch of files to another tab and they disappear into a random subfolder, if there are any, in the target tab.  Then I have to hunt them down.  Not really convenient.  I feel more comfortable with dual pane multi-tabbed.

I downloaded this one and tried to get it going but it seemed to be hosed by the fact I had Classic Shell installed. I could not access the Folder Options down arrow to enable it.  I had a tough time uninstalling both.  So I went back to classic shell since I'm on W8 and I'm used to having it.

@TaoPhoenix I can see that such a clip might be ironic and make a point. But I'm not really out to embarrass them.  They know me as I've been going there every day for some months and allow me small favors.  Plus they are open 363 days a year.  Only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.  It seems cities these days don't want to maintain public rest rooms.  Those on the street have to depend on the largess of stores and restaurants.  I don't know why it's so difficult to have clean decent public facilities.  When I went to West Palm Beach the day I was evicted there was a public rest room at the AmTrack Station.  There were cameras trained on the entrance.  That and the occasional foray by a security guard or policeman seemed to be sufficient to keep everything ship shape.

Since most of the people working the Publix checkout knew I'm homeless I have to assume the surprise came from the fact that by asking that question it indicated I expected the effort to be something other than PR.  I think it was more like a "what are you nuts?" reaction rather than hostility.

The other thing I don't understand is now and then they get on a kick of asking if you want a bag when you buy stuff.  Like, at the volume they buy that stuff one of those plastic bags must cost them a percent of a cent.  Can they really enhance the bottom line that way?  Maybe it's some PR about avoiding litter or land fill issues.

More frustrating than any PR campaign for me is the lack of any affordable storage for homeless people.  For my needs a locker about double the size of a high school locker would be sufficient.  No matter how clean you or your clothes are, walking around lugging all your possessions marks you as homeless.  Many of the guys who drink and mainly just have a change of clothes and some blankets hide them in a bush someplace.  They figure if it's ripped off they can go to a church or shelter and get replacements.  That doesn't work for me.  People fear catching homelessness from you like it's some contagious ailment rather than the lack of an address.  It's weird.  But fear is not rational.

It would be nice to walk down the street without hearing "Casa" everywhere I go though.

Non-Windows Software / Re: Tempered Glass 2 Gnome Theme

If I had better video the black background might be cool.  But I admit I'm a sucker for transparency/translucency.  I don't mind a fractal flame wallpaper.  But for window elements opaque doesn't grab me.

I remember there was a theme for OS/2 that was so 3D that dialogs were not only beveled, but riveted.  :)  Funny how styles fluctuate.

Edit:  I've gotten lazy and left icons on my desktop.  ( A W8 Laptop btw.  )

Speaking of donations, often when I check out at Publix they ask me if I wish to donate a dollar to help feed the homeless.  Sometimes I point out they could bypass the bureaucracy and just give me the money, since I am homeless.  The reaction is always pretty sour.  Never even a chuckle.  :(

I wonder if the number of contributions justifies some kind of filtering software?  Like if the amount is less than 3 times the cost of postage, send an email only?

Or perhaps they have some experience that if a small donation is acknowledged in a classy fashion it often provokes a more generous one in the future?

Just speculating.  :)

Torture porn?  You mean when the talent tries to read their lines like it's Macbeth?   I hate it when that happens.  :)
