If you do give up on it, you might give XnView a look. It is another freeware program with similar functionality.

Developer's Corner / Bored? Why Not Create a Startup Company!?
« Last post by KenR on July 02, 2007, 01:36 PM »
Here's another interesting article to take your thoughts away from important things. This one is a multi-part discussion of startup companies.

In this series of posts I will walk through some of my accumulated knowledge and experience in building high-tech startups...
This series will focus on lessons learned from this entire cross-section of Silicon Valley startups -- so don't think that anything I am talking about is referring to one of my own companies: most likely when I talk about a scenario I have seen or something I have experienced, it is from some other startup that I am not naming but was involved with some other way than as a founder...

Living Room / World of Borecraft: The Trouble with Video Games
« Last post by KenR on July 02, 2007, 01:28 PM »
Here is an article about problems with computer/video games with purported educational value that I thought was interesting. See what you think.

...Any child of the 1980s and 1990s will remember Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing and Math Blaster Mystery: The Great Brain Robbery, games that promised to make skills acquisition fun. They'll also remember ditching Mavis Beacon for something with guns as soon as their parents' backs were turned. Making games educational is like dumping Velveeta on broccoli...

General Software Discussion / Re: Software to AVOID!
« Last post by KenR on June 28, 2007, 07:43 PM »
Ah, isn't that the inherent problem with forums — that guys like me don't pay attention to what's new and just dump everything into one of two sections?! ...

Interesting! I didn't know there was such a section. I assme it's new (?) as there are only a couple threads there. Does this one show up in the main RSS feed? So, thanks for bringing it to my (our) attention Zaine.

Living Room / Re: Humorous, perhaps informative, article on forum trolls
« Last post by KenR on June 25, 2007, 09:38 AM »
I have trolls follow me around on and off for years at a time, just posting insults right after I post something. I work hard to ignore them, but sometimes you have to engage. I've found that more often than not, retaliating got ME banned. So for one particular jerk, I created my own page for him and whenever he posts another slam, I just follow it up with this link: Ouch, the stupid, it burns!  (R-rated for rantly cursing)

Every one of my favorite graphics programs has wound up getting bought out over the years... Probably a lesson for me in there somewhere  :'(  -- maybe why I've given up not ever buying from companies I dislike. I've got & use P/Shop 7, and will eventually get around to upgrading to CS3, but only to preserve my ability to upgrade and pay the far lesser price... 7's the oldest version that qualifies I think, & probably won't for CS4.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing Mikiem - or at least formed the same opinion. However, it might be cheaper to buy a new copy on ebay rather than upgrading from the developers. It's something to check into anyway when you are ready to upgrade.

I just bought PSP XI for a fantastic price on ebay. So, while I like Photoshop, I am going to try to live with v7 instead of upgrading. It will be interesting to see if I need to switch to Photoshop because I can't do something in PSP.

EVERYONE: Thank you very much to all who contributed to the graphics programs threads. The posts has been extremely informative and much appreciated.

After trying PSP XI a little; I didn't notice any severe problems and am pretty impressed. I even created a cool CD image (which I'm pretty proud of) that I'm using for a couple icons in Directory Opus.

I think PSP is one of the most intuitive paint programs out there (I haven't tried them all though, but I'm attempting to). But I must say that I was missing some of the features I managed to discover in The GIMP during it's 1 day on my computer. The most notable would be selection constraints in The GIMP. By holding Shift, Ctrl, and/or Alt you can force the selection tool to be constrained to different shapes/have different origin points. So, if you're using the 'Circle' selection tool, you can hold one key to make the cursor the center of the circle, by holding another you can force the selection to be a perfect circle, and by holding both you can do both. VERY handy IMO!

Hirudin,
Sorry to be sooo late in responding to your post. Your CD images is fantastic. My compliments. I thought that your use of the base image was clever and the various layers showed an impressive understanding of masking.

Second, I agree that PSP has the most intuitive interface. I had not tried any of the programs people had recently been discussing except Xara. So, I downloaded a copy of all of them and tried each (that's one of the reasons it took me so long to respond). I found the UI of PSP far more refined and intuitive than the others, including Photoshop (at least v7 which I purchased).

Very funny comic Eóin. I just noticed it when Nighted's post (I'll never tell :)) called my attention to this thread. I think you're right. It summed it up perfectely!

Just out of curiosity, are any of these programs better than Acrobat? I have Acrobat v7 Standard, which I got with a scanner. Is there any reason I would WANT to use anything else to work with my PDF files?

Thanks, Ken
Ken,

Scansoft's PDF Converter Pro (Current version is 4, though I have version 3) is very good working with PDF files, when it works.  But it is pretty buggy IMO. Actually quite a few users are having ... $300 is too much for me to pay for occasional home use only, so I sought less expensive alternatives.

J-Mac,
Thanks very much for the response. Certainly if I had needed to create PDFs before I got the scanner, I would have bought an alternative too. It's amazing to me they sell any copies at the price they charge.

Developer's Corner / Here's Why You Shouldn't Program Alone
« Last post by KenR on June 21, 2007, 12:33 PM »
"Is software development an activity preferred by anti-social, misanthropic individuals who'd rather deal with computers than other people? If so, does it then follow that all software projects are best performed by a single person, working alone?"

The answer to the first question may be a reluctant yes, but the answer to the second question is a resounding and definitive no. I was struck by this beautifully written piece which explains the dangers of programming alone:
Some folks have claimed that [working alone] presents a great opportunity to establish your own process. In my experience, there is no process in a team of one. There's nothing in place to hold off the torrents of work that come your way. There's no one to correct you when the urge to gold-plate the code comes along. There's no one to review your code. There's no one to ensure that your code is checked in on time, labeled properly, unit tested regularly. There's no one to ensure that you're following a coding standard...

Have you looked at Serif's DRAW PLUS 8? Not sure it's in the same league as the tools mentioned above, but I've enjoyed Serif software for many years. Url is http://www.serif.com.../drawplus8/index.asp
Chuck

Hi Chuck. I went to look at the software, but I can't find a copy to try. How do you actually GET the software to test/try?

Hey Jeff,

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Please let me know if there is anything I can do. Like you, I too have found the site to be helpful at particularly difficult times. I hope it continues to be a source of friendship and support for you.

Sincerely,
Ken

Ok, this has gotten me curious. What are people using for their general graphics and image design/editing?

Thanks, Ken

Here is a welcome new Windows feature for desktop users that would previously required an interruptible power supply to address.

...–Normal Sleep Mode–
With normal sleep mode a computer will go into standby, which is a state your computer can quickly resume from. It basically keeps power flowing through your memory, but just about everything else is shutdown...
...–Hybrid Sleep Mode–
But what about desktop computers? If you put your computer into standby, and then a little bit later your power goes out, everything will be lost. The desktop has no time to put the computer into hibernation like a laptop would, so you’re left with nothing.
Well, not with the new hybrid sleep mode. With this enabled your computer will store the contents of your memory immediately when entering sleep mode.

Wow. I made a post about this myself (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=8842.0) and guess I should have read the postings first. I see I am not the only one who is upset about Xara. Maybe I should just take the loss and go back to Photoshop.

Hi all.

I purchased Xara Extreme last year. The cost made it seem like a good deal, it seemed like a nice package, and I was looking for something that was a bit more friendly than Photoshop, which I was using at the time.

Now, a year or so later, they are back with an update that cost around as much as I paid for the software originally. Not that it matters, but I think that for whatever reason, I was under the impression at the time that updates were free.

At any rate, I was wondering if people planned to shell out $40-$50 for the upgrade. It seems excessive to me, particularly after the small amount of time, but I wanted to see what others thought.

Thanks, Ken

Living Room / Humorous, perhaps informative, article on forum trolls
« Last post by KenR on May 31, 2007, 05:56 PM »
I hope you enjoy this article about "forum trolls" as much as I did. In fact, I think it explained a few, or at least one, individual(s) I know.

The troll comes to the door of a new forum and sets down his bag of tricks. If he has a grudge against the people inside discussing and debating their passions with a certain degree of amicability, peacability and decorum, he does not show them. He has the cracked, stoic smile of Robin Goodfellow, a Puck with the simple desire to disrupt peace itself. He loves chaos; his bag is full of golden apples he can lob to set the masses squabbling. He has also many masks, smoke bombs, straw men, cloaks, puppets, matches, ethanol, knives, dust, sand, and magicks of the most arcane sort. He knows what he is about - causing trouble. Why?...

Hi Dmitry,

Like many others here, I have been using Website Watcher for a while. I just learned about your program today, so I have just started to evaluate it. Also, I just recently purchased a bookmark manager (Link Commander). Your program would combine the function of these two programs for me. Since I have already bought them though, I would really want to test your program out carefully. On the other hand, if I am going to buy it, I would hate to miss the discount. Do you know when the discount will end?

Any chance of some free copies for giveaway on this site?

Thanks very much,
Ken

Well, I would recommend you to check out Newzie...

Hi Dirhael. Although I use and really like FeedDemon, Newzie does look very nice at first glance. Most feed readers I try are off my computer within 10 minutes. I am going to give this one a good look though. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Living Room / Use this to keep track of all those songs you have been writing
« Last post by KenR on May 29, 2007, 04:09 PM »
I'm not sure if it would be good or bad if I became better known for my music than my practice. Maybe you guys can help me with that!? KR

What's this all about?
Every songwriter I know keeps a record of the songs they've written. Whether it be in a notebook or on the PC, these songs are usually accompanied by other information like chord progressions, tabs, and sometimes a simple mp3 file.
I wanted a way to organize this information myself, and figured there would be a lot of people in my exact situation. With that, the idea for JamJunky was born.
