try it with something other than PDF's.

My experience indicates that PDF's are not typically compressible, or at least not significantly so...

finally some movie merchandise I might actually buy

Living Room / Re: External 5.25 floppy usb drive or another way?
« Last post by Target on August 11, 2016, 04:25 PM »
Does someone make a 5.25 usb external drive? seems a waste to buy one just for a single read but...  I guess another option would be try to find some old computer on ebay with a 5.25, but yuck.

try a vintage computer group.  Apparently this a quite a big 'thing' so there should be someone that could help you

or perhaps one of the museums or university's?

What would the website hold?

You can do quite a bit with something like WordPress:
-michaelkenward (July 18, 2016, 04:53 AM)

good question...the old sites long gone and no backups (DOH!!) so I can't say what the content was, but I envision it being a handful of static pages (it could be one page, but that looks untidy for mixed content), and mostly text.

Will look into wordpress as a starting point, thanks!

and have a look in the coding snacks, things like this have been done several times already

Personally I'd look for non-free but cheap. I simply don't trust "free".

A local sporting club might not have a big budget, but wouldn't something like $10/month be possible? That would probably get you pretty far - might even get real support and working backups.

could be, but at the moment I don't even really know what I should be looking for.  The club <i>had</i> a site, but they let it lapse (through inattention), so they pretty much have no public face (and they really need to promote themselves a bit)

Or if you want something a little more involved you can always get a cheap deal on a VPS and run your own web server, which is what I do for my own static sites.

Or possibly get some use out of that RasPi ;-)

this is a good solution, but it needs to be transferrable, ie I can't guarantee that there will always be someone that can manage it (assuming I can )

Free web hosts suck. All of them.

really struggling to see the value here.  If you really want to contribute, tell me what you're experience is, with who, and why that wasn't good.  And while you're a it, some positive stories would be useful too (you must have some).  If you can do that then maybe I can learn something...

I use zoho for small scale free web hosting and e-mail needs. It's similar to google apps.

so what exactly does zoho provide?  i had a look at their site, but it doesn't look like they actually do the hosting part

looking for some advice and/or recommendations regarding free web hosting for a local sporting club

I've done some static pages before, but never had a need for anything like this and I really don't know where or what to look for (or look out for)

I envisage this will be a largely static site, with a members only section for results and the like, email support (for contacting the committee), and probably pretty low bandwidth

any and all advice greatly appreciated

I have created a tutorial website with about 150 articles, so a page at a time just won't work
-HankFriedman (June 28, 2016, 07:50 PM)

you should be able to consolidate all those pages into a single page, you just need to setup the relevant bookmarks and convert the links, and there are probably tools around that will help with that (if not do it for you!)
265
how many pages are there in the site in question?  seems like there are quite a few options that don't crawl, but will do a single pages so maybe consolidating the pages might be an option (this also gives you the option to edit out any cruft!)

Can you not access the store through the client and add it from there?

EDIT: Just click the Install Game button to add it to your account and you'll get:

I could were I not at work.  Tried for ages to get in yesterday but it seemed I don't exist (something about there being multiple accts, depending on how you log in?)

also available thru humble bundle (if, like me, you can apparently only access steam thru the client...)

Yeah I don't get this one. They say it's both more expensive and less powerful than other things out on the market right now... Anyone who is OK with that already owns an Apple product (:P), so why would they go for an Ello?

loos like something that would probably be targeted at schools or colleges.

No assembly required, all the parts are in one place, basic coding and/or electronics on the one platform.

That said, it does seem a little expensive and underpowered for the average tinkerer (horses for courses) but I suppose if you added up all the components and paid someone to build it for you it's probably not far off
269
of course, where else would you mount a switch!

I know you've had it for a while, but wouldn't this be a 'warranty' claim?
270
I was disappointed with the Onion- mostly because I couldn't get it to turn on because of their quality problems with the power switch.  Hopefully this will be better.

presumably the switch is one of those damn SMD jobbies - could you perchance just scrape it off and short the traces?
271
Ello is quite a bit more expensive that most of the other options but interesting nonetheless

at the risk of poking the bear, so far all I'm seeing is people telling him not do something, but nothing that actually points him at anything useful or helpful

There are many (many!) useful tools and resources available (for free!) and rather than pointing out the obvious (which the OP freely admitted to) how about making some useful recommendations

I'm not recommending any of these, they're just some of the results from a google search for HTML tutes (though the W3schools are probably a no brainer)

intro to html - http://www.w3schools.../html/html_intro.asp
HTML tutorial - http://www.w3schools.com/html/
HTML beginner tutorial - http://htmldog.com/guides/html/beginner/
HTML tutorial - http://www.tutorialspoint.com/html/

As already noted you don't need any fancy tools to do this stuff, any text editor will do, though most decent editors will include syntax highlighting that might make things easier for you
273
Of course there may be simpler ways than playing around with Powershell, ie. write the output as a HTML doc then load into Word and save as a Word file.

I was thinking along the same lines.  I have a small script that does pretty much this already, and the output is printed to PDF

trying to understand just what you trying to do here

are you using word, or some other program?  what is the end result (clearly some form of contact sheet, but in what format) and the intended purpose?

so many questions...
