that is *extremely* cool.
the demo video is very helpful by the way.

yes i want it

ps.
this is one of those things that there are certain people who would really love this, but it will be hard for them to find your tool or know where to look.  you should make alittle web page for it that people can find while searching, and maybe make a pad file for it, etc.

unicode support -- wow!

one note:
before you try to get it to run on startup, just try running it manually after the machine boots and is configured wrong.
then you can at least verify that by simply changing the registry settings the changes take effect immediately.
if not, you may have something else to do as well.

Darwin's suggestion about uninstalling the drivers completely is worth trying if you've so far only tried RE-installing.  Just to be clear, what he suggested is running your computer without using the synaptics drivers at all and just using MS built in settings and driver.  I can't tell if you said you already tried that, or have just tried uninstalling and reinstalling.

one general thing you could do is install a program that can take and compare registry snapshots (there are quite a few of these such tools).

then you could take a snapshot, change the settings, then take and compare the registry.

then you could export the relevant settings to a .reg file which could be run on startup.

wow i didn't notice digit2's request till now -- sorry :(
i didn't even think about adding it to recent.template.php..
but it would probably mean duplicating the post template code which i'm not to keen to do.. maybe there is a better way to do it.

yeah there is no way currently to inline link flash images in a post.

Find And Run Robot / Re: [feature request] quick way to modify an alias
« Last post by mouser on November 21, 2007, 03:30 PM »
it's actually a good idea.. i think i may add it.

i did however add an "explore here" to any alias result, including agroups(!)
so you can right click and then be taken to the alias tab of options with the proper alias file already selected.

General Software Discussion / Re: Tool to migrate Thunderbird e-mails to The Bat!
« Last post by mouser on November 21, 2007, 01:13 PM »
what you could do is:

create a temporary account, import all into that.

then create sorting filters that sent the emails into different accounts based on the TO or FROM fields.

thebat is very, very, *very* good at letting you filter stuff around, and you can create and change filters at any time and then re-apply them, etc.

it's hard for me to see what's going on without more information.
you will have to close the options and specify some text to search for to use with the loc alias.

Living Room / Re: Amazon's Kindle eBook Reader
« Last post by mouser on November 20, 2007, 06:39 PM »
reviews are coming in (let's collect them on this thread):

Amazon Kindle eBook Review (Verdict: Confusing, Expensive...but Promising)
http://gadgets.boing...-kindle-ebook-1.html

It's just too damn expensive.

Worse, the $400 premium just to get the Kindle reader isn't the last fee you'll pay. I'm not talking about paying for eBooks from Amazon, which are priced typically at $10 or less, but for the additional fees tacked onto the data—the words—that are pushed down to the Kindle automatically. Subscribing to a blog via the Kindle service costs $2 a month. Newspapers run around $15 a month. All for information currently available for free via the web and RSS syndication, not from copyright violators, but straight from the publishers themselves. (Boing Boing is also available via Kindle's blog service. We are also available on the web.)

The reason, I suspect, for the nickel and diming from Amazon is the always-on EVDO connection. While some of the cost that must be paid to the wireless carrier are surely cooked into the initial price of the Kindle, the costs tacked on to content subscriptions are an attempt to recoup charges Amazon will incur from Sprint over the life of an active device.

General Software Discussion / Re: Screenshot capture Problem
« Last post by mouser on November 20, 2007, 06:34 PM »
there is defintely something going screwy -- you are not the only person experiencing this.
i think it has something to do with the minimize-to-tray component i use in screenshot captor.

goingtothedogs, if you are willing, please email me at [email protected], and what i will try to do is put out another version sometime in the next week or so, using a different component, and let's see if that doesn't solve it.  i only wish i knew why this problem is only occuring for a small number of people.

Older Newsletters / Re: Newsletter for November 19th - Codename "Postcard Club"
« Last post by mouser on November 20, 2007, 05:46 PM »
I like the format where there are fewer items in each section.

The one thing i'm not sure about is the links inside the paragraph intros to sections.. on one hand it might make the section intros more useful, but on the other hand it makes it harder to find things at a glance -- i sort of have a preference for everything in the newsletter being in a bulleted list.  Anyone else agree or disagree?

It might be nice to have more sections too.. Looks like we forgot to do a "Member Spotlight" this newsletter -- i think we should have one every newsletter; there are enough interesting members of this site to always have an interesting site run by one of our members to spotlight.

GOE 2007 Challenge Downloads / Re: GOE 2007 Programming Contest for November 2007

For people looking for ideas, i'm posting several to the FARR plugin ideas thread.. I'd love to see some more farr2 plugins as part of GOE programming challenge:

Another related idea to FarrTimeZones is FarrDaysUntil:

User would create a text file with events and their dates or deadlines, like
My Final Exam, 12/20/07, 5pm
Uncle's Birthday, 2/24
etc.

Then when you type:
fdu [KEYWORDS]

You would see a display of matching events with the TIME LEFT UNTIL THAT EVENT
like fdu example would show:
1. My Final Exam - 30 days and 4 hours (12/20/07, 5pm)

General Software Discussion / Re: Fixing an XP Laptop, when to give up?
« Last post by mouser on November 19, 2007, 04:41 PM »
Honestly, in everything but the very most trivial easily identified and localized infections, my recommendation would be:
back up all user data files and reformat the hard drive completely.

It's just not worth the risk that there is some infected file you won't find, and not worth the hassle.

Reinstall from scratch, then make an image of the drive in case you have to go back again to the clean state.

Keep in mind however, that many laptops come with a cd that will do a clean format and reinstall of laptop hardware drivers.  Unlike desktops, some laptops have specialized drivers and software that should be installed to get the most out of the touchpad, etc.
