Scott Hanselman writes a pretty nice and lighthearted blog on programming tools and related things.  He's recently been describing his new home networking setup, and it's a good read because he goes into some real detail about choices he made and issues he's solved..

I posted earlier about copying files across my new Gigabit home network. I was getting about 10 MB/s (that's MegaBytes) between two laptops and I got responses like these in the comments that shook my confidence. Here's my thoughts after each interesting comment that appeared in the previous post:  "You should be pushing at least 100 megabytes per second with gigabit ethernet."

Added: Failed install - Installer is not valid Win32 Application

this error happens when for whatever reason the browser didnt download the complete dcupdater installer program.
this seems to be happening quite a bit, especially with internet explorer.  i don't know why. i don't know anyone that does.   >:(

If you just want a one-way edit of the text that's actually pretty easy, i can easily make and option so you can edit stuff in that memo view or another, as long as you dont mind that if you change a checkbox afterwards, etc, then it will revert.

you are really using tflm for some interesting stuff.. the more i read though the more i think that what you need is another program, similar to TFLM but more designed for your use.. like using nice plaintext files for variables so you can easily create and edit them using a standard text editor, etc..

« Last post by mouser on November 30, 2007, 09:33 AM »
in one case, farr tells windows to run the shortcut -- which windows should figure out how to decode and execute.
in the other case, farr reads the shortcut info inside it and executes the program itself.

i'm guessing that some firewalls are blocking one of these modes on people's machines where the problem is occurring, but it could be something else too i suppose..

Hi Kim,

I'm very glad to hear that the last version was an improvement.

Making the main editable directly.. it's not impossible but it is quite tricky because whenever you check a box it recreates the message and so all changes you make would have to be remembered and associated with a particular node in the tree.

Right now you probably know that you can edit the currently viewed contents on-the-fly so to speak by selecting a node and changing the text in the upper window.  this actually changes the tree *temporarily* which is how its able to remember your changes even if you check and uncheck other items.

What i could do i think is making it so that when you click anywhere in the main text, it JUMPS to that node in the tree on the left and the upper window -- at least then you could find what node was generating any text instantly.

As for the variables --
i think one of the problems is that i really don't use them much at all myself, so naturally they got relegated to second-class status.  i can think of some improvements like HIGHLIGHTING them in the main text window and letting you click on them there to fill in the values.

And as you say maybe they could be shown in a better way in the list with user ordering.. but i guess my problem there is just that i don't have a good feel for how more people want to use these variables and i don't have an understanding of the philosophy of their use so it's hard for me to get a grip around what the ideal user interface would be.

« Last post by mouser on November 29, 2007, 09:52 PM »
I have to admit to having a kind of opposite view of the cybernet defense of vista.

My view is, i don't like vista -- but i hate to see people piling on too much and i don't think it's fair to keep beating a dead horse or jump on the bandwagon..  So i find some real comfort in the cybernet news people standing up for it.  Call me strange but i think it's sweet.

try to go into options -> general and check the toggle mark for "Always launch shortcuts directly"

whatever it is change it -- see if that helps.

it would be very useful to have a generic plugin designed to search in simple file lists.
ie a file containing a list of other files
or a an xml file where farr is told which items should be searched for, etc.

i do have plans to write such a plugin if no one else does.

DC Website Help and Extras / Re: Request: where to put "Tiny Tips"?
« Last post by mouser on November 29, 2007, 10:34 AM »
i think general software or living room would both be fine.

just add something at the end like:

Do you have any other tips for renaming pictures?

then the thread is opened up for others to chime in.

and make sure you name the topic something related to your tip so people can find it again, like
"Useful tip for renaming photos based on EXIM information" or something like that..

I think it's nice when people share their tips, large or small alike.
