I've separated all the entries for the GOE 2007 Programming Challenge into their own threads, and created a page to highlight them and make them easier to locate.

Congratulations to everyone who participated -- I think it turned out great and we got some really fun entries

Actually you know this was a great little idea.  The days since thing is just nice and clean and simple.  very nice

Freeware Genius reports on a free program called FastKake which basically just creates a bunch of shortcuts to do things on your computer (log off, start screensaver, etc.).

As a commenter on a lifehacker post about FastKake points out, such short cuts are *perfect* for using with a launcher like our own Find and Run Robot (FARR) and others, since you can search for them so easily.

however you have other options if you dont' want to remove the hd.
you could boot with a rescue disk (bartpe cd or ultimate boot disk or something similar), which would let you get to your files.  but then to copy them off your hard drive you would need a usb stick or an external usb drive.

Do I have to remove the HDD from the laptop to do this?
yes.

In order to help encourage some coders who hang out at DC to write some new freeware productivity software, we had a little coding challenge in November as part of our "Getting Organized Experiment."

The results are now online for anyone to download and use for free: https://www.donationcoder.com/goe2007

The challenge was:
  • Write a computer program (or web service) which helps people be more productive with their time.
  • Highest honors go to creativity and uniqueness.
  • This must be program that was not released before Nov. 1st, 2007

We received almost a dozen fun entries, including some really interesting and useful ones.  Check them out and please send a thanks to the authors if you like what they've done.

And please remember as always, if you would like to see more things like this, it's important that you show the authors you appreciate their work.  Send them a thank you, send them some donation credits (just click the gold coin next to their name), etc.  Sometimes just a pat on the back is all that's needed to make one feel good about their work.

Living Room / If you build a new PC, make sure you get 2 HDs: One fast and one big
« Last post by mouser on December 04, 2007, 04:08 PM »
From a recent experience I want to try to argue that when you build your next PC, you do not just go buy a giant Hard Drive for it.

Instead, buy TWO hard drives:
  • One pricey but fast for your C drive (operating system and program files) - The Western Digital 10,000 RPM, 150gb drives are about $180.
  • One cheap but big for your Data and for Backup and Scratch use - Lots of 500gb-750gb, 7200rpm drives to be had for $200 and under.

The reason for this approach is several-fold:
  • The super fast C drive really does make a difference.  I think it's probably one of the most cost-effective ways to speed up your computer in terms of real world use.
  • Having two drives lets you backup from C to D and from D to C, so that your task of performing regular backups is really easy and fast and you can protect yourself in the case that one drive fails.

thanks aifu, i'll message skrommel and get him to fix it.
i think skrommel's page is just getting too big for one mind to control it.. maybe it needs to be split up into multiple pages or reorganized somehow..

Grett,

one issue with the left-hand importance column.
there is text saying it must sum to 100.. but it's not enforced.

the best solution is to not need it to sum to 100 (which maybe you already do), by simply "normalizing" the calculations by dividing by the sum.

wow well that's great news -- i see from the box image that it does indeed support 2.5" notebook hard drives.

you know i have 2 external usb ide enclosures and a sata enclosure, but for some reason it never occurred to me that there would be a connector to connect the 2.5" laptop drives.

for $20, anyone who uses a notebook should buy one of these for an emergency drive recovery should you ever have the need.  great find.

Does anyone else with a program want some web space at YOURCHOICE.dcmembers.com to host your program (and maybe a web page for it)?  Might be more stable and easier than attaching to forum?

ChalkTrauma -- that is a great idea, except:
do these ide-usb bridges connect to a laptop hard drive? i don't think so.

does anyone know of an adapter that will let you connect a notebook drive to a pc via usb? that would actually be very useful to know about.

Nice find, curt.  Definitely interesting to read.

I think it may be a little ahead of it's time in terms of being a better idea than an implementation, but i think the main idea is important.

We all have related data spread out everywhere.

Although this noah seems to enforce a timeline and topic oriented approach to organizing information, i think the future will look more like a dynamic filtering/tagging system, which will basically let you view all your documents in very different ways.  Want to work will all your email, you'll see an email centric approach organized where when you view an email you can related documents on your disk relating to the user your are emailing.  Switch to timeline view to see a timeline with all the documents you worked on, emails made or received, on that date, etc.  Or use keywords to show all data on your computer (and online) relating to your finances, etc.

I came across techlife for the first time today, while browsing the website for the very cool screensaver "electric sheep".

Looks like a really nice small blog focusing on computers, and discoveries in software and on the web. Looks like a new regular read for me.
