one thing we won't do is have top donator and top coder lists.
the spirit of this site is that each of us has different resources, different gifts, different lives, and different ways of adding to the community -- we don't want to start making lists saying who has contributed more than others.

there is an option to have it start minimized -- the problem you are having is no doubt the same one as IvkovicD, which is that when you change the settings they aren't being remembered.

one workaround until my next update:
log in as admin, change the settings as you wish (set it to start minimized)
 then exit
then restart (as normal user if you don't usually log in as admin).

i think the default should be to start minimized, i'll make that the case in next release.

tpreal,
if you make a new project, as small as possible, that does nothing except create a window as you describe, which exhibits the error, and send me the code, i will investigate it and try to find your problem.

How do I renew my License/Subscription? Once the one year subscription period is over, you will have to re-purchase the software.

personally i find this outrageous and i completely agree with you tinman with your comment:

If I had of seen this subscription notice I would have thought it would be for future updates.

if a company wants to charge for major updates, fine.  i have no problem with that.
and if an antivirus company wants to charge a yearly subscription to get the latest antivirus definitions, fine again.

but to make a local desktop program like this STOP WORKING after a year and make you buy another subscription -- i would run as fast as i could away from such a company.  not cool.

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 9.1 released
« Last post by mouser on December 09, 2007, 01:20 AM »
Far be it for me to bring this up since i happen to think Directory Opus is an outstanding program.

Butdo we need to have some kind of informal understanding about when it's appropriate to post about a new release of a program?  I ask only because i'm slightly concerned that everyone is going to have their own favorite programs (and authors have their own programs) and they might feel like they want to post every time their is a new release.

I guess my first instinct is that we should discourage a new thread being started each time a new release of a program comes out.. If there is something important about it, or if it's a major new exciting release of an important program, etc. then that's a different matter.

Just my 2 cents, nothing more.

hmm that is not quite what i thought you meant seedling :)

what i thought you were suggesting is
for each of the tasks in HowLong2It that counts how many days have elapsed since you last did something, add the ability to specify a "too long" alarm.

in other words, let me add a task like "Water the Plants", and the program keeps track of how long its been since i did that.  Let me set an alarm so that if i go past 7 days before doing it again, it should show me an alarm saying its been too long since i did that task.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: 1 Terrabyte Western Digital Drive for $264 USD
« Last post by mouser on December 08, 2007, 09:42 PM »
I'd think twice about buying a terrabyte drive. That is a lot of data to lose if it crashes.  I think it'd rather have two 500gb drives or four 250gb drives.

get an external enclosure, put a rack in it, and you can swap out drives at will and move them around to dif computers, etc.

as tpreal says you may need to download that library zip linked to in his post.

but tpreal, why not build it as a static link so no one needs the libs.

Living Room / DonationCoder celebration ideas and requests to help
« Last post by mouser on December 08, 2007, 04:39 PM »
We are going to have our yearly celebration and fundraiser in January.  Seems to me that we bucked the odds by surviving and flourishing for 3 years now.

I don't know if anyone feels like helping out but i thought maybe we could start a thread where people could post ideas of things we could do and people who want to help and participate might find something they are willing to do to help.

One thing i thought might be nice is, sites often have a page with awards and quotes from users and links to reviews and writeups, etc.
I used to try to keep track of such things, and i made a (sometimes funny i hope) page of quotes here, but i've not updated it in years and i never got around to making a page linking to reviews and awards, etc. It would be a big big job to try to collect links and excerpts and screenshots of reviews/awards/blogposts/quotes, but if someone was willing to take on this job it would be a wonderful thing.  Anyone?  Contact me at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer.  Be warned it will be a big project as the aim is not just to have a list of urls but to have a nicely displayed page with links, a text excerpt, and a little thumbnail preview.  In other words a page people will enjoy browsing through.

Any other ideas of things we could do to celebrate?

General Software Discussion / Re: process tamer idea/question for gaming
« Last post by mouser on December 08, 2007, 09:55 AM »
you can't quite do this currently.
you can tell it to normally tame a program if it uses too much cpu, but NOT to do this if it is in the foreground (ie if you are playing it).. so this would do what you say but it would only reduce it to low priority if you are in another window AND the game is still trying to use a lot of the cpu.
