Screenshot Captor / Re: Printing a Screen Capture With Screen Captor?

you can set it to not stretch from the print preview dialog, which you will see ONLY if you use the File->Print command and not if you use the quick toolbar button.

i will put on my todo list the ability for sc to REMEMBER which stretch setting you had it at last, so that once you configure it once, it will remember for when you use the toolbar in the future.

Hi T,

You did everything right -- i just got backlogged and sometimes it takes me a bit to send them out.. I really have to automate it more (or completely).

You should have it by now -- if you don't, drop me an email.

Living Room / Re: Best Of 2007
« Last post by mouser on December 21, 2007, 01:28 AM »
YES!
I've set up the mechanisms for presenting it.. now i need to find some volunteers to scour the year's posts and choose which are best for 2007 and what categories they go in.

It's not quite as bad as it sounds because you don't have to go through ALL posts -- but basically go through the past years BLOGGED items, and mark the best of those as best of 2007, since those already represent the first cut for the list.

Still, that's 1000+ blog items to review and choose from.

If i can get some trusted volunteers who are willing to take this seriously, i will "train" you on how to use the blogging system and upgrade you to perform this task.

I'll have a beta up tonight for those who want to help make some Item Definitions for it.

General Software Discussion / Re: Software Ethics
« Last post by mouser on December 20, 2007, 05:36 PM »
Let me mention another thing which i think is going to hurt software quality.

Every day we are seeing more and more the push towards advertisement-based software.

This is the Google effect -- everything becomes "free" with advertisements.

It's strange that there is almost universal horror at the idea of "adware" on your desktop, but no one seems to mind much that the entire web is becoming adware, and as applications move more to the web, adware is becoming the norm not the exception.

I think one of the consquences of the googleification (adwareification) of sofware is that something profound changes in terms of the motivations and incentives for software developers.

It seems to me that the incentives shift much more to attracting eyeballs and new visitors, rather than providing a sustained quality product.  Sure, products will still need to be good and get a good reputation to compete, but i think we are very much likely to see much more of a focus towards attracting new visitors rather than keeping happy "customers".  And companies won't have a paying userbase to answer to -- they can always just say "hey it's free (and beta), what do you want from us?! stop complaining and watch some more ads."

I really can't say i like the direction that google/adware is taking us.. I hope there is still room for other kinds of software that people are willing to pay to support, so it won't be dependent on advertising, but i fear it's going to be an uphill battle.

the intention with dc license keys is that you should be able to use our programs wherever you go, etc. so there is no reason for you not to use your license key on the office computer.

but if it bothers you or them to use your license on that computer, just email me ([email protected]) for a license key that has different info.

some things i look for in a name:

1) if you tell someone the name, they should be able to do a web search based on what they hear and find it easily.
this means that many names like points2progress are troublesome because you might thing its "points 2 progress" or "points to progress" etc.  i think always prefer something that has an intuitive way to spell it.
2) if there are too many hits in search engine thats not great.. better to have something unique and easy to find.

looks like it might be a skin issue..
one solution is to go to FARR options, and switch to "Plugins, Updates, Fonts" tab, and check the "Override default font settings" and put in custom values for result height, etc.

Have online leader boards and all that jazz. Make it a competition to be productive.

I was really conflicted about whether to make this an online application with such features, vs a desktop application.

I went the desktop app route, and i think i won't be adding online features to it.

If it proves to be something people are interested in it might be nice to make an online version (anyone want to try? it would be nice to share the same xml format files for describing activities, etc.)

General Software Discussion / Need help with a name for my new NANY program
« Last post by mouser on December 19, 2007, 07:24 AM »
As most people agree my skills at naming programs are, to put it most charitably.. uneven.

I promised recently that i wouldn't try to name programs any more without getting suggestions first.

So I have a new program which will be my submission to the NANY 2008 programmingchallenge.  I should actually have a beta version available for testing in the next couple of days for anyone who is interested.

The current *working* title for this program is "Points Into Presents".

Screenshot:
pip1.png

What it is:

It's a motivational program.. You can create (and share with others) lists of activities and assign them points.  Then when you perform an activity you indicate that and it gets logged, and you get the points associated with that.  There is also a "rewards" section where you can "buy" things with your earned points.

So a student might set up various activities like homework, reading a book, writing a paper, with various points.  Maybe a parent would set up the point system and promise certain rewards, etc.

So, what would be a good final title?

Another possible name i thought of: PointShop

remember that users have to sign up at the forum to download a long-term free license key, so most users sign up for that reason.

still.. it's enjoyable to see a new person post every once in a while who has just been a quiet reader for a while and suddenly gets inspired.  usually that happens when the newsletters go out..

hmm.. in general the answer is always that, all things being equal, go for the faster hard drive.
having a faster hard drive will noticeably speed up your computer use.
i dont know about battery and heat though.. but for me, even though i agree with lashiec that performance isn't usually the end-all be-all for notebooks, i'd still go for the faster hd.

The fundraiser is coming up in only 12 days!

Please give me some more suggestions of things we can do to encourage people who have signed up but not donated or not participated in the forum to take the plunge. And suggestions for ways to thank people who have already donated.

(note that per our long standing policy, we don't want to do anything that would make people who donated say in december think that they should have waited).
