N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Pledge: Photo Q&A Site - askapic.com
« Last post by app103 on December 26, 2010, 09:48 AM »
I would probably limit it to public domain/creative commons only, and make the user fill out a credit box with creator info (name, url), and let them check some boxes for the image's license type: BY, NC, ND, SA, PD/CC0 (some of these can be combined, some can not)

This would allow your site to become truly useful as a repository of free images with open licenses and cut down on the legal worries associated with allowing users to just upload whatever they please.

It would be great if people could tick a box which would apply a particular license. I dont know if that's even possible - BUT the reality is: if someone really wanted to post something they would lie. So I think the Terms have to place the responsibility on them to NOT upload copyright material.

It would be great to have a repository of free images but I dont think it's feasible in this instance - I mean, how can people really prove that an image is theirs to license? It may be possible, but I cant see it being easy....

The form isn't so much for enforcement as it is to remind users of the site's policies with regards to licensing of images, what is allowed and what is not, and making it easier for the user to comply with existing licenses by giving credit to the source of images that are already CC licensed, and renewing the agreement to follow the rules each and every time they upload something.

Yeah, sure they could still lie, but if they do and you get a takedown notice, you just delete the image (and ban the user if it is a blatant violation of the site's policies).

App, what program did you create the icon with?  I don't know much about this, but I assume you set white as the transparent color, and that's what helps make it look good on the form's title bar?

I have never done my icons completely in an icon editor...always did the art in an app more suited to creating art and then importing it into the icon software. There was no setting of any color as transparent.

I used Paintshop Pro v7 to do the actual image, starting with a transparent background and building everything in layers on top of that, saving as a png (auto-merges layers, preserves transparent background), then importing the png into IcoFx

IcoFx is free, and you can use whatever art program you prefer (Photoshop, Gimp, Paintshop Pro, etc).

i'm used to using tab mix plus... I see that it's not compatible with it.  did you ever use it, and which would you say is better?

I use Tab Kit too, and primarily because it does a lot of the stuff I would have used Tab Mix Plus for, but unlike Tab Mix, it's compatible with most other extensions. Tab Mix Plus has a long history and reputation for not playing well with other things, and I didn't want to take a chance that it would break stuff I want to use.

mouser, it could be a page where one enters the info for all their accounts, and instead of displaying it on profiles how you do now in a big long list, use just a row of icons like at the bottom of my profile.

Attached is a big list of profile urls for various sites, and their icons (was for a project I never finished). I included a better explanation of how to format it on both edit profile and the displayed profile pages.

WTF?

I like my about:blank page...

What's that bar on the left?

Vertical tab bar.

Here it is as .ico (zipped because I can't attach .ico files)

By the way, this wasn't as much work as it might seem, since I already made the hand vector ages ago, for the purposes of using in screenshots, instead of arrows. I had it added to my shapes library for quick & easy drawing.

How's this? I tried it at 48x48 with text in it and it looked horrible at that size. Then I thought about it and came up with the perfect round object to stick in the center...the dc favicon.  :D

How about something like this, pointing fingers of blame in every direction?

excuses.png

I am not sure what to put in the center, though. Has to be something that will look ok when icon sized.

(this isn't anywhere near finished, has some minor flaws that need to be filled in with color, but not till after all vector work is done)

Living Room / Re: Tags for multiple users - problems (& solutions?)
« Last post by app103 on December 23, 2010, 05:02 PM »
Just be warned, that when you allow people to tag stuff with anything they want, things like this can happen.

One of the ways to try to get around this is to consider tags in 2 groups...personal and community. Personal tags are tags applied by a single person. Community is tags in which at least a certain number of people have mutually tagged an item as something. Last.fm requires at least 3 people to tag an item the same before a tag shows up in the community list.

This will keep out a lot of the irrelevant tags a little more than using all tags submitted by everyone. It will also allow users to tag things for their own personal use, to make finding select items easier for them in the future. A user could tag items related to a personal project with the project name, and this tag would only be accessible to them. It would never show in the community list.

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Trout (audio player)
« Last post by app103 on December 23, 2010, 04:32 PM »
...and here's a request :D

Please make the random option even more random: when I close and restart Trout, it plays the first file in the list - every time I restart Trout. Only when I click the "next file" button, the random mode really kicks in.

I get around that by using the "Remove track after playback" option found on the List menu. That way it can't play the same files over and over, even when restarting. After playing the first file, it's no longer on the list to be played again. This ensures no repeats as long as there are still files in the list. When the list is empty, reload the folder and begin again.

Re: terms and conditions, one thing you definitely want to make clear is copyright. Essentially, anyone uploading an image should, by doing so, be stating that they either own the copyright for the image, have explicit permission from the copyright holder to use it in this manner, or it is an open/creative commons/otherwise not copyright controlled image. These kinds of Cover Your Ass (CYA :D) terms may be critical to the long-term survival of such a system as it could otherwise be easily cut-off from web hosting without warning, or be the subject of a lot of DMCA/take-down notices (at the least).

I agree. In fact, I would probably limit it to public domain/creative commons only, and make the user fill out a credit box with creator info (name, url), and let them check some boxes for the image's license type: BY, NC, ND, SA, PD/CC0 (some of these can be combined, some can not)

This would allow your site to become truly useful as a repository of free images with open licenses and cut down on the legal worries associated with allowing users to just upload whatever they please.

Keep in mind that there are additional concerns with images beyond license type, with regards to signed model releases for images containing people's faces and signed property releases for some objects (like visibly branded items, trademarked items, some buildings, photos of artworks, etc.)

If you only let the uploader assign tags, then you will run into the problem you described.

If you let everyone assign any tags to any image (multiple tags would be best), then each person will use what they want. Eventually, with enough people, every image of a pig will be tagged with all possible tags that could be used to describe it (pigs, piggy, piggie, pig, piglet, swine, hog, sow, babe, wilbur, etc.), including misspellings, and fuzzy searching will become unnecessary.

If it uses JavaScript, can't you code something up that erases the variables/object used by it? As I understand it, that's one of the major weaknesses of JS, there isn't a way to make objects/variables that can't be accessed by any other JS code on the site.

Wordpress.com doesn't allow users to use any code outside basic HTML, CSS, and approved preinstalled scripts (in the form of widgets)...so how do you propose this be done without using any javascript?

Nope, it's still there on your site as well as all other Wordpress.com blogs. They have not removed it at all.

Post their screw up to Lorelle. If she screams may be higher powers tell the happy engineers to read and understand notes from 3rd party suppliers, like change of TOS.

I did give her a link to this thread in my original email to her, inviting her input if she knows anything about this issue.

comScore is a known spyware company with a number of shady tracking products, among them browser plugins that present a security risk to the user, and scripts to track behaviors of your site visitors, not just across your site but other sites as well, with the data being sold to other companies. They are not new to the world of controversy, they don't always get the user's consent for tracking, and their privacy policy is not known to be too good. They have lobbied the anti-malware companies trying to get a new category of spyware to be recognized, calling it "researchware" in order to get their spyware products whitelisted. The anti-malware companies are not falling for it.

Information Week: Is ComScore Trafficking In Spyware?
SecurityFocus: comScore receives spyware allegations
Computer World: Sears/Kmart spyware scandal (and Falkirk Wheel)
Beta News: Sears found to be using spyware to track visitors
University of Maryland: Google to partner with researchware firm comScore
The Register: How ComScore can track your mouse clicks
ComScore Doesn't Always Get Consent

There are plenty more, but the ones from TechRepublic, Forbes, and the Washington Post won't load for me.

Just do a google search for "comScore spyware" if you want tons more reading material.

The fact that Wordpress would willingly team up with this shady company is disappointing, to say the least.

I checked and the code is gone. Looks like they've gotten rid of it.

Glad to hear that, but keep your eyes on your page code from now on, any way.

Just got a reply from Lorelle:

"Lorelle has contacted WordPress.com as requested details on this
issue and will get back to me. Until we hear directly from
WordPress.com, Lorelle has told me that she thinks this is just code
debugging and WordPress.com working with that service for surveys or
tracking, a non-offensive bit of code."

Edit: Lorelle contacted me again and was a bit upset that I quoted the text of her email and stated that I should have paraphrased her, instead. I promised I would change this post and I included the suggested paraphrase, quoted from her most recent email to me.

Just took a quick look at a number of different blogs hosted at wordpress.com. They all have this code at the bottom of every page, including this rather famous blog.

That simply stinks of WP being hacked. I can't see them being dirty as they have a good name.

That's my thoughts, as well. I have contacted Lorelle, since her site is affected and if anyone can make WP take this issue seriously and investigate it, I know she can, pretty quickly.

I don't believe your computer is infected with anything, and this is why...

This is very clearly at the very bottom of your page code:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://b.scorecardresearch.com/beacon.js"></script><script type="text/javascript">try{COMSCORE.beacon({c1:2,c2:7518284});}catch(e){}</script><noscript><p class="robots-nocontent"><img src="http://b.scorecardresearch.com/p?cj=1c1=2&c2=7518284" alt="" style="display:none" width="1" height="1" /></p></noscript><script src="http://s.stats.wordpress.com/w.js?19" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
st_go({'blog':'17744093','v':'wpcom','user_id':'0','post':'0','subd':'drinkthekewlaid'});
ex_go({'crypt':'RDZ8LFkxbXFNLFlqbmNuOUklLytJVjAuaD9Xa1RJL2tfLixtbVZqSlprY3Byem0yVVBQJWtna1ZTZ1ZdalMuTFQmNjJ1ckYrbVVKcE1zVklXS0VobDg2cXQtR0Q4L3JiOXBXLFA4MzFxXWdkQVRYd3xWYVJQVWpwZFdTSyslJjlsai01L25PaW40ZG5kRGx5cm50NVI9THE5b0NoSmFmWz9UfkZFaVVZUiU2QmUsNzUxc20yYkVXQm1oV0JCXUN+Q1lJQXpBMU9IKzFr'});
addLoadEvent(function(){linktracker_init('17744093',0);});
</script>

Wordpress does not allow users to insert javascript code into pages. The only javascript that should be in your page code should be either code that is part of Wordpress itself or code from widgets that they approve and make available to users.

In other words, unless this is some feature you selected from some menu, preapproved by Wordpress, then Wordpress had to have added it without you knowing, or Wordpress itself got hacked (not just your site) and someone has inserted it into their wordpress code that is being used on all sites they host.
