Living Room / Re: DonationCoder powered by logo's
« Last post by mouser on January 06, 2008, 11:06 PM »
One of the things that i'd love to see is a logo that donators can put on their website that says something reflectoing the idea that donations to the site actually help fund software development.

"I Fund Software at DonationCoder.com"
or how about
"I Fund Freeware at DonationCoder.com"
or
"I Fund Software Development at DonationCoder.com"
or something similar.

Should we have a logo development contest?

Best logo wins a mug!

Find And Run Robot / Re: can't manually add plugins
« Last post by mouser on January 06, 2008, 09:40 PM »
as lanux says its probably just a matter of exiting and restarting farr, or type: rplugins from farr to have it rescan them.
the updater does nothing but copy the plugin files there and trigger farr to rescan for them.

Living Room / The Rule of 3 Drives: How to Build your Next PC
« Last post by mouser on January 06, 2008, 03:20 PM »
After using a 3 drive setup for a few iterations, i'm convinced it's the way to go.

I thought i'd post about it for those who are building new PCs.

The idea is to build your PC with 3 hard drives in it:
  • The first, the C drive, will be the system drive which will hold Windows should be as fast as you can possibly get it.  I recommend a 10k rpm raptor.  These are pretty expensive (close to $200) and top off at 120gb or so.
  • The second, the D drive, will be a nice big 500gb or larger scratch drive and backup drive.  You can use this for storing lots of backups, temp space, etc.  Just get a normal 7200rpm drive here.
  • The the third, the E drive, is for your data.  Make your own MyDocuments folder here and store your own data files here.  Use a fast 10k rpm raptor 120gb if you like, or a normal 7200rpm drive.

Some key points:
  • Having a large backup drive in the pc, independent of both the windows system drive and your data drive, is wonderful.  Makes it so easy to backup and restore quickly and gives you plenty of space to do so.  Also gives you great space for any temporary stuff.
  • Upgrading to a 10k rpm superfast C drive which holds windows and your program files, feels like buying a new computer.  the speed difference is remarkable.

As a bonus, I highly recommend getting one of the pass-through sata rack systems for your C drive, and getting a spare HD.  If you ever want to experiment or install a different OS to experiment with, you can swap out your main OS and swap in the alternate.

Living Room / Re: What kind of tagging system would be appropriate for DC?
« Last post by mouser on January 06, 2008, 03:00 PM »
i think tagging should be as unobtrusive and invisible as possible, except when you explicitly need it.
you dont need to see tags when reading posts, and a very small place to optionally fill in tabs on the post form should suffice, with some nice javascript to help you select appropriate tags IF you choose to tag your post.

i really do not want to add any noise to the forum, so i see no reasons to be displaying tags when you browse the forum normally.

maybe where tags can play a more robust roll is if you explicitly want to browse or search by tag labels by going to a special page.  the blog system will be moved to use the new tagging system, so that we can blog items by tagging them with specific tags.  (because of this it means there have to be some tags that only moderators can set).

id also like to make a way for some users (moderators only?) to be able to list threads that have not yet been tagged and let them easily tag threads in bulk.

Before this thread veers off too much, maybe it's time to wrap it up.. Definitely one of the fastest growing threads on the forum, and lots for us to think about, but we might all be getting a bit redundant at this point?  Let's all just try to direct all of our energy into hounding Wordzilla to write the tag mod for the forum and see how that goes.
24460
put the .alias file in the main zip right alongside the plugin and farr will find it.
also: maybe make a .dcupdate file for the plugin so farr will check for plugins.
24461
i could add commandline features to add points so it could be scripted.
24462
That makes me happy to hear :)
If people use it, I think we can come up with a lot of fun stuff to add to it.

« Last post by mouser on January 05, 2008, 07:17 PM »
I have an idea, let me post it and see if anyone is interested..
What about a mod for Smf Forums, DC forum in particular,
which generated a kind of view like this city thing, EXCEPT:
the forum user name is the name of the building
the size of the building = # of posts
geographic location = either geographic location as configured in signup OR alternatively, maybe draw the city as if you are drawing concentric circles, where user #1 is at center, and then the circle goes farther from the city center as member id#s increase.  OR you could use the same concentric circle idea except use # of posts to determine how close to center of city they are.
you could include only people with more than a few posts to keep it from getting too busy.

Anyone want to try to make it?
you could ignore the SMF mod aspect of it for now -- just make a general purpose php (or whatever) pretty city generation service, and worry about querying a list of users, userid#,postcount values later.
24466
psionics, can you elaborate on how you'd like to use it?
kittynn, what problem are you having downloading it?

If you find one you like (to do ignore threads or anything else), post a request to have us install it.
Better yet, send a message directly to wordzilla.

I am looking for the same thing. How do I stop new replies to certain topics from showing up in the "Unread topics" section of dc?

can't be done yet, but i agree it would be a nice thing.

I think the key is the context..  this forum is mostly about software and technology and things like that.. if someone has a post on sexuality and technology, or a post on politics and technology, that may be relevant and worth discussing here.

The avoidance of general religion and politics on this site is simply an acknowledgement that such discussions can often get extremely heated and antagonistic and tend to devolve quickly.  Personally I think that everyone should be debating religion+politics, the question is only whether we need to discuss it here.  In the same vein, this isn't a site for discussing your favorite porn links, or for arguing whether porn is ok or not.

However, if there are interesting articles dealing with the technology and software of politics or sex, then i think that's fair game.  just my 2 cents.

i wonder if one possible solution is to add some extra ?cruft to the download url to prevent ie from cacheing it?

nosh, that's a great find -- that's definitely the problem and it's nice to read someone's attempt at diagnosing it.
bad news is.. he never found a solution.  :tellme:

Living Room / Hack your cooking with Christopher Kimball
« Last post by mouser on January 05, 2008, 01:19 AM »
I've recently caught a little bit of a cooking bug.

But as enjoyable as the cooking is, i'm more of a reader than a do-er, and i'm really truly loving reading Christopher Kimball's books.  Basically he takes an experimentalist/scientific approach to these things.

He analyzes and compares ingredient/temperature/method variations as if he was looking for the cure to pneumonia.  It's really fun to read about him analyzing minuscule changes and the effects they have.  You also learn a ton about why recipes tell you to do different things.  Very fun reading.. I almost feel like i don't have to do the cooking after reading him talk about it.
