This is a really great idea..

But it's not yet usable for the reasons discussed here:
https://addons.mozil...hp?DiscussionID=7897

So i recommend people not use this yet.. Anyone know of a similar extension without these problems?

Do you know the following scenario? You hardly managed to fill in a form, but before being able to send or save, your text gets extinguished because of some computer problem. This extension will prevent such annoyances by saving your text with every keystroke.
An own cookie will be used to save your input data. Hence it rests you to decide about the time of final deletion.
With version 1.06 it possible to use local files instead of cookies. This may be of advantage because cookies are limited to 4kB.

wonderful.

this is a really great one.

it might be nice to be able to skip having to put the "" around the text.

this translate plugin really deserves its own thread so im going to split it off into a separate thread if you don't mind.

Living Room / Re: Article: The Economics of Open Source Donations
« Last post by mouser on February 02, 2008, 07:00 AM »
I think it would be good form if all these publishers and authors who make a nice living writing books about open source projects would donate/contribute to said projects.

I really agree with this, and i don't think it happens much.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Suggestion: arrow keys to scroll result list

one thing i was thinking before was if there are a lot of items, make the last item in the result list be something like "More items not shown (122).." which you could click to show all.

Looks like a nice new blog
I don't say that because you mention DonationCoder -- any site doing honest software reviews is a good thing in my opinion.
I'm going to bookmark it and put it on my regularly visited list.

Is this a sign that it's days are counted?
very likely.
sounds like the hard disk is dying -- get all important info on it backed up somewhere else.
can you open it up and replace the hard drive?

Thanks for posting that seedling

FIRST: BACKUP your file now in a safe place so you have a copy of it as it is now.
THEN: Go to Tools menu -> Maintenance Operations ->
and do "Cleanup unused.." and then "Remove all but.."
and do "Cleanup unused.." and then "Remove all but.." again (only because i dont remember if one depends on the other for maximum cleaning!).
and then "Refill tree icons.."

then save (save as new file if you want to be safe) and then exit and restart and see if its fixed.
please don't skip the backup step before you do any of this -- because it woudl help me if you sent me the bad file so i could see what might have caused it.

I'd use a proper word processor, no question.

Wiki's are great for when you have multiple people editing, or you want to do detailed history of revisions.  And things like WikiPad may be very useful in keeping heavily hyperlinked notes.

But for preparing a nice business report, where formatting and printing and layout are important -- no question I'd use a word processor.

The fact that you're trying to excise a message saying "this has been stolen" suggests that it has, in fact, been stolen.

in all fairness -- this may be a message meant to show when one website embeds a flash created in another, so that the thief website can get all the credit and visitors.  if you are downloading it for your own private use on your pc this may not be an issue.  don't know about this particular case, i'm just pointing out one possibility.

i'll see if i can reproduce and fix.

General Software Discussion / Re: Digital ink/tablet pc: worth the effort?
« Last post by mouser on February 01, 2008, 08:10 AM »
there is just no way taking notes with a pen on a tablet is going to be used over taking notes by typing on a keyboard, unless all he does is draw diagrams.

I think your gut instinct is right.  Unless you have a very good real reason to want a tablet kind of laptop, i doubt you will actually use the feature.  Furthermore, you are going to pay more for it and it will make the laptop bigger.  So i say that unless he has a really good specific reason to want a drawing tablet, don't get it.

The real first decision i think to make is:
Does he want a big heavy laptop with big screen and big keyboard, or a really lightweight smaller laptop.

I tend to favor a lightweight small laptop, just because it makes it so much easier and funner to carry around with you.  It really does make a difference.  But if his eyes aren't great, a bigger screen could make a big difference.

I just wanted to post a quick tip that i discovered yesterday.

My Internet Service Provider is being bought out by another company and it seems they are doing some behind the scenes work on their end.  My internet connection started acting up and then suddenly completely stopped yesterday.

After 30 minutes on the phone with tech support the conclusion was that something was wrong with the router. When i got off the phone I was left with one pc connected directly to the cable modem and my router completely out of the loop; tech support told me to contact router company for a replacement router.

Of course i never believe anything tech support people say, so i did some experimenting.

The router was not retrieving an ip address for some reason.

What i tried, which worked instantly, is to go to the router settings and CLONE the MAC address of my pc.

So i guess for some reason they were blocking my router from getting an IP from the network, and this tricked it. I'm sure the experts here could provide a better explanation, but I thought i would post it just as something to try if you have a similar problem.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: New FARR Plugin: FCalc
« Last post by mouser on February 01, 2008, 06:18 AM »
regarding #2, you are saying that home+end should go to front and end of the edit line is that right?

it's not just a farr issue, its for any plugin that uses the richtext/memo display mode to display a file or info, so any decision we make applies to all of them.  i could use ctrl+home and ctrl+end to go to begining and end of the memo though, and use home and end to go to begining and end of the search box if people prefer.

there are several scripts that allow you to easily edit your website pages online without using a content management system, as you seem to be asking for, but i don't know the names.. hopefully someone will post.

yes i will be very interested in hearing what they come up with.
i just hope i can read their stuff without gagging on their normal "this is the most revolutionary idea in the history of the universe" vibe that i got from their previous work.

Thanks for the feedback Richard -- I should add that whenever i find an article about micropayment systems I post it on the forum, and there are some interesting web articles and websites that have come out since then.  Anyone who finds a useful paper or blog post about the issue, please do post it.

I voted "Yes, and i would like to help".

This is in fact one of the main uses planned for a Tag system.

Right now we are using a very primitive "tagging" system using the blog engine i wrote for the forum, to permanently create special pages like:

But a more powerful tagging system could help us provide some content-organized sections easily, to supplement the pure search-based methods of finding stuff on the forum.
