Find And Run Robot / Re: add launcher "keywords" to farr?
« Last post by mouser on February 21, 2008, 12:26 PM »
You just add more programs to the same alias group in the same way.
(by the way you can also drag and drop new programs into an alias group dialog as another way of adding them to an existing alias group).

Find And Run Robot / Re: add launcher "keywords" to farr?
« Last post by mouser on February 20, 2008, 04:01 PM »
you absolutely can do this.
here's the easiest way:

first search for the file normally by typing its name, like: notepad.

now if you launch it once, it will get a high score and appear right away in your default list or as soon as you type anything like it.

BUT, if you want to create a special keyword for it, just right click on it and select "Add to Group Alias -> New Alias" and then type the name of the keyword you want to use as the group name, for example: np.

now when you type np up comes your notepad result.

You can also then:
  • put more than one file under the NP keyword -- now you get a menu when you type np of your items to choose from
  • customize the text that gets displayed for your item

FARR alias groups do everything that you can do with keywords for files, while also providing group menus, regular expression matches, etc.

Developer's Corner / Re: Delphi Contest: Create Fancy Applications for Fame & Glory
« Last post by mouser on February 20, 2008, 09:43 AM »
ps. it occurred to me that i should say something perhaps about why i always try to get the coders here to enter programming contests on other sites, etc.

it's not that i really think coders need encouragement to program -- if you like to code, you code, if not then no encouragement is really going to make a difference.

i just think the forum gets better each time a new coder comes by and participates and interacts with the rest of the coders and non-coders on this site.  and so i'm just trying to show some solidarity on DC with coders who have their online homes elsewhere but feel like stopping by here and sharing a bit of themselves with DC, and at the same time encourage DC coders to explore the world wide web outside of DC as well.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Google Calculator
« Last post by mouser on February 19, 2008, 02:36 PM »
it seems like i need to add 2 things:
let user hit enter to activate the plugin (instead of having to type a special character).
and maybe some kind of way to send the plugin a signal after a short delay of no typing, so that plugins like this could query an online source after a short delay so it wouldnt have to check every character, but could still check "live" without requiring enter to be hit.  what do you think?

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR v2 beta behavior with multiple monitors
« Last post by mouser on February 19, 2008, 02:33 PM »
mhermes, I think your second post hit the nail on the head.
FARR remember where it was last displayed -- so if you last used it and had it show on one monitor, and then you disconnect that monitor, when you bring FARR back up, it will be located OFFSCREEN, and so won't be visible.

I'm adding to my todo list to make sure FARR is visible and move it to a visible monitor if not.  I may also add an option to always popup farr on current monitor that the cursor is on.

This looks like a very interesting project.  Make sure to check out the short review at freewaregenius, which is helpful as always, and where i saw this mentioned first.

Want an efficient way to do on-screen reading of web-pages, email, and other electronic texts? Try WordFlashReader -- its a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) program that makes on-screen reading easy. Its free, open-source, and works on both Windows and Linux. Try it out!

This program works best with text files and html files, but can open pdf files as well. WordFlashReader works by flashing each word of the text or book sequentially on the screen (pausing for punctuation). Not only is this way of reading off of a computer screen less straining on the eyes than the normal method, but also after a little practice you may discover that you can read at multiple times the speed you normally do.

Good news for students wanting to develop on MS Windows platform:

How would you like a free copy of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008? How about the entire Microsoft Expression Studio? Not enough...... how about Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and more?   For once, something that sounds too good to be true really is this good and really is true. Starting today (or soon in some areas), students worldwide will be able to download our professional development and design tools for free! It's called DreamSpark and it is upon us.

DreamSpark is simple, it's all about giving students Microsoft professional-level developer and design tools at no charge so you can chase your dreams and create the next big breakthrough in technology - or just get a head start on your career.

Who can get this right now?
We are kicking this off in 11 countries/regions, giving DreamSpark to millions of students in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, China, Germany, France, Finland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Belgium. If you are not residing in one of the countries listed keep checking back, we will be adding more countries throughout the year.

What do I have to do to get this software? Not much really, just select a product and follow the steps below.

Sign In with your Windows Live ID. If you don't have one, go get one here. Pretty basic stuff.

Get verified as a student. The system is linked to schools and organizations around the world that can confirm student status. Simply choose your country and school, enter your info and hit submit.

Download your products. Now remember these are professional tools. This means they are pretty big files so make sure you have the bandwidth and space to bring them to your machine. We support the latest versions of both Internet Explorer and Firefox for your download.

if you bought an extended warranty, there is a VERY good chance that they are just going to fix it for you quickly without question.  so stop worrying.  you just might not want to volunteer that you dropped it.
