thanks for the report about what worked -- (sorry you had to solve it on your own!)

thanks everyone for the advice -- the next time it happens i will now be able to see it since i changed the reboot switch, and thanks to you guys i now know about the dump files

ps. i guess the auto reboot could be useful if its a remote pc or something.  a MUCH smarter choice would have been to ALWAYS PAUSE on a blue screen for a few seconds.

well cloq has a point though, that although you are right about the problem, a fix might come from any of:
  • motherboard bios update
  • mouse driver update
  • windows update
  • buying a new mouse

nice idea jabberwock, i wonder how hard it would be though.

so basically having read it, it seems the article is not really in favor of software patents, it summarizes the cases for them, and then puts forward cases against them.

and my reading is that they are basically come down against software patents, though in a very round about way.

then the article concludes by basically saying nothing and taking no point on the matter.

my summary of the article:
1) read it for the interesting pro and cons
2) ignore the title, ignore the conclusion
3) ignore houseteirs comments about the article and especially the title of his post, which really confused me.

ProcessTamer / Re: ProcessTamer Tray Icon does not display in Vista
« Last post by mouser on February 24, 2008, 07:10 AM »
thanks iycgtptyarvg -- i think i may just add code to my programs to force a delete/add of the icons 60 seconds or so after startup, good idea.

i wonder if when this phenomena happens where the icon is not shown (either at startup or on explorer crash), whether it's possible to DETECT this condition.  that would be ideal -- then you wouldn't actually have to flash the icon if it wasn't needed.

while it's hard to reproduce the startup with windows rare case where icon doesn't show -- it's easy to reproduce the explorer crash situation.  any idea how one would check for this scenario and check whether your icon became missing from the tray after an explorer crash?

That is very surprising to hear.  Software patents are extremely controversial, and as you say, the free and open source software advocates are rarely in support of them.. I'll have to read this (and the comments to the article) closely.

I think it's important to say that this is an article by someone at the magazine making a case for Software Patents -- I don't think that it represents an "official position" of the magazine.

i guess i was confused by the title and housetiers comments about the article which i took to be saying that the authors were actually making the case for software patents.  it seems they are not taking a position but just putting forward some arguments on both sides.  if anything, they are NOT in favor of software patents.

i suggest you borrow another mouse from a friend and see if it sleeps ok.  if it does, get a new mouse.

yep, it was an oversight -- i'm usually pretty good at making sure we dont have direct links in the email newsletters but this one slipped by me.

gadget discussion has always been welcome in the living room section (where you posted it), so i think this is a good place for such discussions.

(though i do always encourage people to attach screenshots of the objects in question!!)

people, if you post an affiliate link, which we discourage here, you at least need to say clearly that you are making money from people visiting with your link.

If I set the jumper to cable select then everything works as it should.

that's weird but... why not just leave it on cable select then?

This might be a fun thing to do weekly --
like every monday start a thread where people are invited to post their plans and goals for the week.

This is rightfully something that would belong in our Getting Organized Experiment section.

you are mistaken.

hibernate is complete power off and memory state is saved and restored from disk.

s1 and s3 are both low-power sleep modes which keep the ram active.

what you want to try is the sleep mode that keeps power to the USB devices.

i mispoke before -- you are using currently S3 mode it sounds like.  and you want to try to force it to use S1.
