Well...ya gotta do something to justify those multi-multi billion dollar budgets.   :P

Now that most police departments are dressed up like ninja and they all have the latest HKs (and tanks) it's starting to get embarrassing. Especially with US crime rates steadily declining since about 10 years before 9/11.

Even if their use is a special case to some extent, I think a failure rate of over 10% is bad.

+1

FWIW, my goto brands are: Hitachi for 2" and WD (non-green) for desktop or basic server.

For commerce/enterprise servers I tend to stick with whatever the OEM ships with it. Doing so minimizes tech support arguments and warranty claims issues when dealing with the manufacturer - even if OEM-branded disks can (although not always) cost significantly more.

Time is money in enterprise. And downtime is big money!) ;) 8)

It's only a matter of time before one of these self-appointed watchdogs gets hauled into court for defamation and damages.

You can't just label something malicious or suspicious and not take responsibility for your actions. Or in cases like this, not to take appropriate action when in error.

The web was a much safer place when Anonymous was running amuck.

Agree. At least they had no agenda against the people as a whole.

And they didn't have multi-billlion dollar budgets, or armed thugs at their beck and call, to make it all happen. :-\

General Software Discussion / Re: The nightmare of the programmer languages
« Last post by 40hz on January 20, 2014, 04:12 PM »
With DBase it wouldn't make much sense since it's dependent on the underlying database engine which ships with the language.

Best bet is just to replicate the tables, reports and queries in something universal like SQL and recode when it comes to database apps. After that you can export the data to the new database, test, and call it a day.

Bit of a hassle. But you'd only need to do it once.

OK, I mis-read that then! Thanks for the clarification. I was going to lose it if there was actually an author bold enough to remove access to data unless you pay :)

 :beerchug:

Oh...IIRC there have been a few app programmers that have tried that stunt. And anything that exclusively lives in the cloud works that way by default. So if you don't keep (or aren't allowed to make) a local copy - you're SOL. So it's a very real concern you have. Probably more so now than ever.

:beerchug: And next round is on me! ;D

So, wait, I can invest time into a program but unless I pay yearly, I lose access to any data I've stored in the program? No thanks. I should be able to use, without restriction, the version I purchased, even after expiration. Otherwise, I am simply wasting my money.

Likewise, the computer licensing model seems highly restrictive...Thanks, but no thanks.

@Josh - No. You don't. The subscription is to cover software updates to the program. The program itself does not require a web connection to work a la the Steam model. Once it's validated it works forever. And all your data is stored locally.

As far as licenses go, I've seen worse. But whenever you don't like the license or the product you can always vote with your wallet and go elsewhere. I did. I didn't like the changes that were made to the way it worked. And I wasn't crazy about the new licensing model either.

Funny thing is, each time I figure I'll replace all my my collection paper card files with something on a computer, I always go back to using index cards.

Guess I'm still old fashioned enough to just want to get it done with the least amount of effort on my part.

Nothing said? They said they're going to continue.

Nothing done? They stayed the course.

Insubstantial? They affirmed that they're going to continue exactly what they're doing now, but perhaps with a minor tweak here or there.

The speech was supposed to be about reforms and changes to be made to government surveillance programs.

Therefore: Nothing of substance was said. Nothing of any substance will be done. And whatever else was being offered as a proposed course of 'action' is insubstantial when viewed in that context.

Hmm...
I really wonder how this is related to "OS".

Considering the NSA has back-doored Windows - and Microsoft fully cooperates with the US intelligence community when asked - anything involving the NSA is OS related.

BTW... which "Liberal Party" are we speaking about not listening to? There are at least twenty would-be US political parties currently calling themselves that.

Obama's changes to government surveillance
posted by Thom Holwerda   on Fri 17th Jan 2014 23:38 UTC

President Obama announced on Friday that he will place new limits on intelligence agencies' bulk collection of phone call records. But he rejected some other recommendations to rein in surveillance made by a panel of outside advisers.

The NYT lists the changes. It's insubstantial.

Oh well...we can always get this mess straightened out after the "next election" right?

General Software Discussion / Re: What's thrashing my hard disk?
« Last post by 40hz on January 18, 2014, 05:47 PM »
That sounds more like a developing hardware problem than a software issue to me. I'm guessing it's a spindle bearing that's semi-seizing. If it starts binding, the controller will detect it and spin up the drive motor to get it back up to speed.

Check inside and see if the drive casing is unusually hot - or use a drive utility to check the actual temperatures along with the SMART stats. That will at least let you know whether it's a looming hardware issue or not. (See here and here for resources.)

Could also be power manager unnecessarily spinning the disk down then up. It happens. Go to your power settings and check the setting for your harddrive and change or disable to see if that's the culprit.

Luck!

... meanwhile in the EU, the backlash seems to have subsided to a token lip service.

Despite all the high-minded talk, the EU is just as guilty of being seduced by this technology as the United States was.

As Gandalf said to the Council of Elrond in The Fellowship of the Ring:

I read in the US news media in my feed-reader today that Obama has made announcements as to how the NSA problem is going to be fixed.
Phew! That's a relief.

Unfortunately, nothing short of an "American Spring" is gonna accomplish that.  :-\

Living Room / Re: Recommend some music videos to me!

I got interested in the sound of the Hang Drum some time back.

It's a lovely instrument with a unique sound, the broader adoption of which is hampered by the somewhat elitist and precious attitude of its designers. One does not simply go out and order a Hang Drum. (You can read all about how that works - along with some additional faux-mystic blather - on their blog here.)

We have decided
  •    to keep on building the Free Integral Hang. We will practice every day to keep the sensual plasticity from fading and the tonal energy from ebbing.
  •    to pass the traces of this work to interested parties who accept our views and travel on their self-accountable path.
  •    to make the few Hanghang available on the basis of letters and recommendations.
  •    to not keep waiting lists.
  •    to pay more attention to how the Hang is developing in the world of therapy. We are skeptical because we are not convinced that this branch lends itself to a reasonable application of the highly complex Hang. Despite having asked for feedback on this subject, we have received only a few reactions and experiences.
  •    to not turn our attention to the media such as YouTube and CDs. We know that the high dynamic of the Hang sound cannot be captured by microphones, and loudspeakers only distort reproductions.
  •    to inform all Hang players on streets and in parks that we are flooded by letters from people who were deeply moved and also want a Hang from PANArt. We are asking all street musicians to contemplate their mission.

Exactly how requiring a potential buyer to "accept our views" while simultaneously and contradictorily insisting they "travel on their self-accountable path" is a mystery to me.

And sad to say, their reluctance to part with their creations has resulted in extremely high prices  for the very few Hangs that do come on the open market. (There's one 'first gen' model currently listed on EBay with an $8500 USD price tag!) However, rather than acknowledge that maybe, just maybe, their deliberately making it so difficult to get one is driving the price up, they only have this to say:

For years PANArt instruments have been on the market for exorbitant prices and speculation has flourished. We take issue with this situation and our Free Integral Hang is therefore restricted to clients who agree to keep this delicate object from making its way in the popular market.

Insane. But I guess that's to be expected when you're dealing with Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, who apparently believe they have discovered GOD in a piece of metal.

<End of rant>

Anyway, it's still a very nice sounding instrument.

Here's the duo Hang Massive playing their composition Once Again:

Well, for that kind of money I'm expected to be an astute proofreader  :D

And you're only golden till that first mistake which makes it past your keen and learned scrutiny...

Been there so I know. I used to sweat bullets over documentation I'd be hired to review. IMVHO it was far easier to write tech docs than it was to proof them.

Thats a great idea. Especially if you're a habitué of one of those long running TV or cable series. Great way to exercise, watch your favorite show episodes guilt-free, and time your treadmill routine. (I use a Nook I was given plus a Netflix streaming subscription myself.)

Looks like a win-win to me!

I'm just shocked at the idea that so many of the visitors to any site are using adblockers.

Seriously?

Whenever I install Firefox on a client machine, AdBlock Plus and NoScript are the only extensions I include by default. And my clients are glad to have them.
