General Software Discussion / Re: GemX - missing in action
« Last post by Josh on October 11, 2007, 02:37 PM »
It seems to me they removed the forums so no one could see the many negatives being posted about their software. Thats fine, if thats their choice, however, I am moving to letting download sites hear my wrath about them. I am updating sites like betanews.com, download.com, cnet.com, etc and will let my words be heard there. Since they seem to ignore paying customers via their touted DSM product, maybe this will get their attention.

I really dont think that online applications will ever, truly, replace desktop based applications. Gmail is nice, but I prefer to have my email stored locally as well as remotely. I cannot do this with gmail unless I use pop, which is a pain in the butt and quite an old/outdated protocol. I love IMAP. If gmail supported it, I would gladly move to it permanently, however, I cannot since IMAP has become quite a necessity to me. As far as other online apps, I still think a more full featured desktop application would be preferrable to an online version which is just ok.

I ask again about XYPlorer, is there any way to make it intercept explorer calls (I.E., start - run commands, shell commands to open a folder, etc)? If not, then its useless to me.

Living Room / Riaa juror speaks out about case
« Last post by Josh on October 09, 2007, 10:22 PM »
It took the jury in Capitol Records v. Thomas only five minutes to find that 30-year-old Jammie Thomas had infringed recording industry copyrights on 24 music tracks, according to the first juror to speak out on the verdict.

The remaining five hours of deliberation was spent debating the appropriate financial penalty, with jurors haggling for both higher and lower awards, before settling last week on the final $222,000 figure, according to juror Michael Hegg, in an exclusive interview with THREAT LEVEL Tuesday.

Living Room / Nasa to build gigantic roller coaster for astronauts
« Last post by Josh on October 08, 2007, 01:08 PM »

Let's hope that nothing ever goes wrong while astronauts are preparing to launch on their Ares 1 rocket - the new vehicle that will replace the space shuttle. But if there is a problem, and the astronauts need to escape right now, they'll have a fun ride down - on the 3rd tallest roller coaster in the world. It's called the Orion Emergency Egress System, but really, it's a roller coaster, designed to get the astronauts away from the vehicle and into a protective bunker in moments.

Take a good look at the image that goes along with this story. See the bright yellow rails over on the right hand side of the image, dropping straight down from the gray platform. That's the escape system. You'll note it goes straight down.

It is official, 12OCT2007 will be the last day for employee's Scott McGregor and David Bienvenu at Mozilla Corporation. Both of these employee's are the two lead developers for the thunderbird project. What does this mean for the project's future?

Mouser has had me hold off on removing it since he is posting in the "Announce your site" section. However, it would be nice for him to post about himself, his affiliation with the site, etc.

General Software Discussion / Re: XP or Vista user — take the poll!
« Last post by Josh on October 07, 2007, 11:22 AM »
Now, you say turn drm off. How exactly do you turn it off? I dont see a "DRM" service or anything similar. DRM is for MEDIA (Music, Video), not applications.

VS6 is also outdated, no longer supported, and this is probably a good reason that it doesnt work in Vista.

Restrictive? People keep talking about this. I have not once had a problem playing any content on my computer. No problems with copy protection, no problems with DRM, nothing. So if someone who HAS HAD THESE PROBLEMS, not read about them, could post, I would love to hear what exactly is going on.

I registered with microsoft and as such was entitled to a free copy of Win2k3 SBS with 5 CAL's and office 2003. I've gotten several small tokens for registration on various products. Its paid off for me several times.

Darwin, I hope they come back online just so that I can express my distaste with their current method of handling things. I havent been ignoring your PM's, merely waiting until I could gather more information. I really wish I could find more, but without an international telephone line, I cant call them to try and reach them.

Their beta team doesnt have any contact either. I am part of the beta team and the latest release I have was a 3.09 beta release which "fixed the reminders bug", although it really didnt. The way they are handling this is going to shoot them in the foot and IF they ever open their forums back up, I plan to voice my disapproval very vocally.

Yes, but does that mean they should disappear like they have due to the number of bad comments? It seems to me they took on more than they could chew. Instead of focusing on core functionality, they kept expanding and adding new things to the program. While this is a good approach in one aspect, its a poor one in the fact that they neglected several major pieces of functionality which should have been fixed (Reminder bug anyone?). As I've said before, if they cant handle the heat of the software world, they shouldn't be baking a product like Do-O.

tinjaw, the only issue I've seen with outlook 2007, if you are using this version, is some compatibility with VBA macros from previous editions. I had a macro in the 03 edition which caused 07 to crash. Other than that, I have seen no real issues with outlook 2007.

Yes, I agree with Curt. Everything and its mother has been implimented for outlook 2003 or 2007 as a plugin, addon, or what have you (EXCEPT FOR THE BLOODY WAY TO SAVE THE FOLDER LIST LAYOUT AND NOT HAVE THEM AUTO-COLLAPSE ON RESTART!!!!!!). Outlook offers so much power that it is perhaps the single most USEFUL tool int he office suite.

So, has anyone found a good replacement for DO? I am tempted to swap to outlook 2007, if i can figure how to keep the folder list expanded when restarting outlook.

Are you using FF? or IE? I am willing to wager they have a page designed for users of firefox that shows its download dialog.
