@40hz - Yepper scares me to.

Apparently Mohoro will be a way to use the Windows desktop in a software-as-a-service way, dubbed "desktop as a service."

Behold! ...Windows DaaStardly.

It's more amusing, in a sad sort of way, when you have the ads turned on and see this:
...

Yeah, I agree, hence my efforts in in the other thread to develop new ad ideas.
PS App what is your oDesk handle and how much do you charge?  :)

On another topic via ChrisG and you if you made a pre-priced app, it's not that $6 will break the bank, it's about trusting the payment mechanism. I trust DC (via that other payment processor I can't recall the name of!) and I trust oDesk.

I also like "Demand Draw" ads - consider for example all our random advice to each other! So then work backwards, contact those companies, and inquire about ad campaigns that *inform*!

You could have a list of "supported products/companies" and then you click your desired ad!

So basically "push ads" are so passe!  8)

Now ^that's^ an interesting idea! Players could then stop at various points to watch an xSec "commercial" to gain life/energy for continued game play.

Broadly, I kinda feel that ads are still so "20th century".

Give us a nice playable game that yes, Features the Product, but then that's the point, no more psychological warfare with what the ad is for! Just to list the screaming example, Mouser, precisely what brand of car is that? Then contact the company and see if you can get a little bit of Co-Branding deal!

After all, to abuse all the old 50's slogans, "If it's Good Enough For Cody, It's Good Enough For Me!"

So while I wouldn't ask (but would giggle at!) anyone to do it for real, let's hold at least a Thought Experiment Contest (with bonus something!) for a game made specifically to be an Ad, up front and on purpose, but playable as a game in the best sense y'all as Developers can make it! P.S. Never underestimate the power of Viral Cult Classics! (Suggested programming tip - structurally lay out the Ad Space, but leave it blank with a little melodramatic overselling Your Brand Here as the proof of concept that we can submit in stage 1 when we contact the companies.)  My theory is it's the same little games that are fun for five hours are in fact also easy to program, and because they are so small, that's what makes them candidates for Silly Viral Gold. Bonus points if you can get Cameo Permission from a 2nd or 3rd rate former viral star! In a retro-looked game I'll always have a soft spot for Numa Numa Guy!

Then I would be willing to make at least a couple of calls to see if I can find an adventurous company to chip in a small deal just to show that "outside their multi million dollar campaigns, they are modern enough to have a little fun with their brand, upon reasonable proof that it's not slander". (For example, to avoid simple cranky flamebait jokes at their expense.)

For example, while of course 30 years too old to be playable, Nintendo once had a hand held game where you had to keep the bottles in a bottle factory going without dropping them. In general I can see Coca Cola all over that one, upon a submitted copy to show that it's just a game, branded however they like, etc.

Car Companies might be picky with ultra AAA levels of gameplay for their cars, but I could see for example John Deere having fun with a branded version of a Dig Dug clone. (Who wants speed out of a backhauler? Geek-racing aside. It's just a backhauler. It digs. Go Go Dig Dug.)

A judge having fun issuing a case ruling:
http://www.opposingv...-tops-v-pasties-case

“The court infers plaintiffs fear enforcement of the ordinance would strip them of their profits, affecting their bottom line,” the opinion states. “Conversely, the city asserts these businesses contribute to reduced property values, violent crime, increased drug sales, prostitution and other sex crimes and therefore need to be girdled more tightly. Plaintiffs, and by extension their customers, seek an erection of a constitutional wall separating themselves from the regulatory power of city government.”

The judge also wrote: "To bare or not to bare, that is the question." In the opinion, he encourages both parties in the case to "navigate the peaks and valleys of litigation, perhaps to reach a happy ending."

I'll try a different track:

I took a sample small directory set and did a filter for "New Text Document.txt"

Karen's Dir. Printer produced the following:

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Desktop\Data\New Text Document.txt
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Desktop\Data\Processed\New Text Document.txt
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Desktop\Data\Mon\New Text Document.txt

Aka it dug up only the copies of your file, and left the rest alone. Is that what you wanted?

Great points Vlastimil, and I'll even speculate that CNet "grabs" versions all by itself and packages them without a developer even knowing! (No proof, just guessing.)

I do think I have seen CNet often outranking the original sites because CNet has lots of tasty Backlinks, and the original site might not be optimized at all, and just be a "lonely page".

Ok let's turn the tables on these scammy ads and turn this experiment into a public service  :P

I've modified the ads now so that they are prefixed by this text (subject to improvement):

"During May of 2013 we are experimenting with showing automatic google ads on our forum threads to visitors who are not logged into our forum. The following ad was not chosen or endorsed by our site, but *might* be useful to you.

Be smart and ignore ads recommending some junk registry cleaner or computer speed up service, or ads claiming they've detected something wrong with your computer. When in doubt, post a question on our forum and get real advice from real people!"

If you have suggestion for better wording/warning, let me know.

That's rather interesting! Does it violate Google's TOS to disparage their ads!? What about going further and hiding it behind a javascript frame or something that does various things to discourage clicking on the ad?

Wow, this is really becoming the "Teh New Hotne$$". Twitter has a decent reputation with me, having passed a "privacy standards survey" recently. Those other companies are all known for highly unclear privacy abuses! Now look who joins the party - Paypal!?
 :o

And it feels different this time, that they won't (very many of them) just fade away, they're getting "locked in" to the tech landscape. So someone somewhere definitely earned their consulting fees! But it's at the expense of the "freedom" of computing!

You mean (gasp) TUCOWS, softonic, and CNET all include crapware in their software downloads? I'm asking, seriously?

I knew there would be, but it's that there's more and more of it as time passes. Pretty soon it's becoming a game of Minefield just to opt out!

We might have to cut this experiment short (or switch to text ads?), as the main effect so far is having my disgust for google quadruple.

I see these as dangerous because they're items we'd all recommend *against* anyone using

agreed -- i see this as a real problem -- the ads that google most wants to put on our pages are programs that we would normally advise against.. i guess that's the main point of advertising.. yuck.

Well, for most "plebes", it is! But we're Cody-ites! We're smarter than your average birds! ... or something!
 8)

Are there ad services where you can choose and approve a small number of "sponsors" each month, and only show ads from them?

I still think "Gamifying" ads holds promise - make an ad page, encourage people to go over there, vote on ads, get enlightened companies who aren't afraid of a little parody and free speech, and make it a whole "experience". Hand pick only items you/we approve of to be in the "network".

Blah Blah, I know, "too much work", but then is THAT the limiting factor we're afraid of - that Google Adsense was easy!?

I also still like an approach of the coders custom-adding big features onto their existing apps inspired by one member, but then the feature is there for all. See my discussions with Chris G on Scrappy. Then maybe do a Revenue Share?

My biggest problems with AV's are when downloading - they tend to not only check the download but also the contents of the download folder which tends to be over-full - or simply when navigating within any file dialogue (save/open).
I guess those two overlap.

MSE used to really slow things down as per above, but it has improved and stabilised the last few months.

Heh my download folder is empty! That's because I save each and every download to the desktop, whereupon then I process it out and move it somewhere. I never liked a lot of the "standard" folders from Windows - Downloads, My Documents, My Pictures, My ____, and a lot of the weird temp folders.

Wow, thanks for your input! I think I can do most of what you suggested. I have got slammed with work but I will try to get to working on this ASAP.

One of the reasons I did the per-scrub box is because I have done the per session before and a lot of people just leave the system on all the time and since Scrubby is an "always-on" app. Per session for someone who leaves the system on all the time could last months or longer depending on the limitation amount. I may do that but have to take the limit back down to about 14 again. I think that is fair.

Oh, I agree, 60 sessions can get long! So yes, good point about Always On, I don't have a clear answer to that per se. That's another point in favor of Free - Pro ; the Pro feature is "Demand Draw", so it could potentially convert someone far quicker.

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Scrubby
« Last post by TaoPhoenix on April 30, 2013, 01:54 PM »
Hi Chris.

Thanks for listening to my suggestions!

However, I am having trouble using the program effectively. The main key combos that make sense for one handed combos (for me, the left hand) are typically used by other programs to do things too, so for example if I am on a webpage when I try to scrub the text, those ___-V combos seem to bring up the "element blocker" addon for AdBlock, and when I switch over to Open Office Calc, then they seem to pull in "Paste Special".

I'd prefer if there was some kind of "autodetect and scrub" mode, so that let's say I copy a web link with control-c like normal, it "magically" comes out normal text with a control-V paste without extra key strokes (which to me feels a bit like a keyboard version of dance dance revolution!)
:P

Also, the per-scrub box also feels too aggressive, because then it's too annoying to test out! My preferred "limit-ware" method is a *per-session*, and make it quasi generous! For example, just for discussion, 14 sessions (not calendar days!) does one of two things. First the user might accidentally burn a couple sessions per day opening and closing it, or because he (or she or it! hehe) had to reboot, or just turned it back on. Now, if it rockets to become a favorite program, those sessions will go pretty quick. But don't make it like "only five", because at least for me I get turned away when a program feels too aggressive trying to reel in the pay conversion.

In fact, I really like the "Fremium" model best, because I think the modern way to market these little widgets is "mind share". You want that program being used at the free-lower level, because then it's building mindshare. But don't super-cripple it to the point of unusability at the free level! Instead, for me the conceptual perfect middle is simple basics are there at the free level, but then some kind of Oh-Wow feature is in the Paid version that makes your jaw drop.

My signature example I'll quote is that Tree-DB Notes program I use. It works fine all by itself at the free level as an organizer. But the Paid version has a really good exporter (that won the category competition for me when I surveyed 20 of these programs last year!), that takes your entire tree of notes and exports it into a web book.

So for example, it sits there being cute little Scrubby at the free level, but then maybe it can do batch page processing at the Paid level. Take a look at this month's short stories from the SciFi webzine I am involved with:

http://www.aphelion-...sections/shorts.html

One big ongoing project I am into is making author's indexes for that webzine. This involves a lot of copying and pasting (but scrubbing!) those story titles because the web link formatting wants to carry over into Open Office Calc. Far better would be to have Scrubby grab all those links and save out a scrubbed list! (Bonus for grabbing the next line down, and sticking that next to the story title!)

So then instead of copy-paste all day, I just batch process the page. THAT's worth $6.50 for me!

Well, going on the "Violate TOS" lines, compromising your account has been stretched a few times to be a violation of that law (what's-its-name), something like "computer use act".

So that's neat, break the law or get fired! There's a nice choice!
