General Software Discussion / Re: Favorite ZIP/RAR application?
« Last post by jgpaiva on July 27, 2007, 04:20 PM »
Same here, steeladept.
I've been using AlZip for about a week, and i'm finding it to be better than both 7zip and winrar. (although i have to admit that i first changed because i didn't like the "buy me" message of winrar)

Also, i'm eager to see how will that ALZip Speed Extractor work, it does look like a grand idea.

Renegade: may i make a suggestion regarding that? There's a basic problem with it. As i never know how the inside of the archive is before i open it, i'd never use the "extract here on double click" function, which is the most interesting feature.
BUT, if there was some safety about it, like "if there's more than one file on the base dir, extract to here/ArchiveName", oh man that'd be perfect :D

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: My Windows Cursors
« Last post by jgpaiva on July 27, 2007, 03:34 PM »
 ;D ;D
I just had a few good laughs after setting some of those animated cursors as the default cursor.. Then i wasn't able to click anything! eheh

This got me wondering: You use animated cursors as the default cursor? How about transparent cursors?

I find a bit confusing using anything other than the default black and white pointer (without shadow), but maybe i'm just paranoid :)

Ok... Done.
See the post above for download link.

The default height is 200 pixels, but it can be custumized. Just edit the ini file and change the "dialogheight" parameter.

Repost :)
Looks like this blog sure is getting some atention. See here for a post about the blog itself.

Looks like this was a breakthrough for everyone, thus it's good to call its atention again.

I've locked the thread to avoid confusion. Please post replies at the other thread ;)

edited due to lack of tact by me :)

Right, but perhaps you could not "invoke" the javascript from the ahk if... the height was less than 200px.  Maybe?
Ok, that's simple, I should have it in a few hours. (not that it takes much time, but i've got to go buy myself some clothes now ;) )

(Also, I'm just getting a feeling for things, has this gone beyond the "snack" stage?)
;D ;D ;D You surely haven't seen GridMove's thread. THAT'S gone beyond the snack stage ;)

DC Website Help and Extras / Re: A place to share Cursors, Icons, etc at DC?
« Last post by jgpaiva on July 27, 2007, 12:10 PM »
ICONS!!!!

I'm an absolute atrocity when it comes to art work.
Currently, in terms of imaging we have nudone (which does the all-might cody and most of the artwork images you see on DC) and hamradio (which does almost every icon you see on DC programs / forum).
I'm sure another artist would be very welcome :D

It's good to hear that there's another helping hand around.

As for how to offer your help, i'd say this thread you opened can do (although others might have another idea of a "formal presentation"  ;D)

Now all you have to do is, when people ask for some icon work.. Step up! ;)

« Last post by jgpaiva on July 27, 2007, 10:14 AM »
I see the combination with sweptaway, fritz.. Interesting! :D

About #2: It can be hard to identify those windows. Let's just specify better what you mean by "tiny pop-up" window. I can specify something like: if window is smaller than a specific height, do not tile.

BUT, if that window stays on the screen and a window is minimized / opened / etc, that window will be tiled too, because of #1. I have no control on which windows are tiled, all of the active windows are.

What do you think about this idea?

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Farr Alias: Window Management
« Last post by jgpaiva on July 27, 2007, 09:29 AM »
This alias allows you to do a few things with the active window by typing a command in farr.

Screenshot-07_07_27,15_23_42.png

Here's the table describing the alias:

CommandDescription
WindowManagementList all the commands
MinimizeMinimize the active window
MaximizeMaximize the window
MaximizeHorizontallyMaximize Horizontally the active window
MaximizeVerticallyMaximize Vertically the active window

Note: Everything assigned in bold is a farr keyword. If you find any keyword is too long, just type part of it, then when it's the first result, press tab to autocomplete.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Delete an Alias
« Last post by jgpaiva on July 27, 2007, 09:02 AM »
Well.. If the alias is in "myaliases.alias", it should NOT be read-only and you should be able to delete the entry by right-clicking it and selecting "delete".

If you can't, please check farr's directory -> AliasGroups -> Installed, and check if myalias.alias is there. If it is, please move it to AliasGroups -> MyCustom.

All the aliases under the "installed" directory are read-only, maybe that one ended up there by error :)

Here edbro:

Replace the following command line:
Music album search $$1 | dosearch -alias +folder_music +open_winamp +\ $$1
with
playlist seach $$1 | dosearch -alias +folder_music +open_winamp *.m3u +sall $$1

:) That should do it.
I replaced the "+\" which means "only seach for folders" by "*.m3u", which means only seach for playlists.
Also added "+sall" so that all the hits are shown.

« Last post by jgpaiva on July 26, 2007, 03:31 PM »
What does the js file do anyway?
The js file is what actually tiles the windows. As ahk doesn't have any code for this, and it'd be quite a pain to code, i used some "help" ;)

Glad to know it's working for you, fritz :)

Oh damn... Do you get that error when you try to run the windowtitle.js included in the zip, nite_monkey?

That's a javascript file, but i supposed it was somehow installed on all windows instalations.

Does anyone know how this can be solved?

OK thanks.  I sort of figured things out after tinkering with a couple of new grids.  So it would seem that any formula involving width or height should always have the left and top variables in the formula to establish a baseline offset?
Yep, that's exactly it.

1) I am having trouble with template cycling.  I created two templates, and placed them in the cycle order, but when I right click to cycle to the next one nothing happens.  The grid goes away, and it seems like gridmove deactivates.   If I then go into the template list, nothing is checked (which explains why nothing happens).

I assumed this feature would cycle between all listed templates with each right click (and roll around). Note that both templates work if checked individually.

2) The help for that dialog (template cycling) refers to a specific list of templates that are available.  Does this mean only these can be cycled?
The thing is: there are 2 representations of grids: the initial (which sucks, and is hardcoded in the code and i still wasn't able to remove), and the ones in .grid files. On that dialog's default configuration, there's no example of how to include the former.
You have to do like i have in the folowing screenshot:
Screenshot-07_07_26,20_22_04.png

This means: place your custom grid on the Grids folder and then refer to it on that dialog as:
Grids/NAMEOFGRID.grid

3) Why do the items in the list have a comma before and after the list?
Well... That's sort of a workaround to get the thing to work. You don't have to worry about them, though. The first comma and the last don't need to be there. They'll reappear when you get back to that dialog, though. Just don't worry about them, it's an explicit example of how i suck at coding :P

General Software Discussion / Re: Encrypt single file?
« Last post by jgpaiva on July 26, 2007, 10:37 AM »
I don't know il alzip can do it, dhuser. But i ended up solving that problem with 7-zip, which can make self-decompressing encripted zip files through command line :)

I just gave up using it for regular use, i've kept it in my file management alias for find and run.

Ok... Let's see what you think about this.
Just unpack the attached zip, and run "AutoTile.exe". (or AutoTile.ahk, if you have autohotkeys installed).

added window height check and fixed misspelling

Yep, it wasn't the greatest of ideas.
I had no knowledge that 7zip couldn't handle winrar archives.
I've changed to Alzip, which feels better than winrar and 7zip (i like the tree view), and has the added bonus of having sexy icons.. eheh

Well, that's as far as i can go, but hopefuly, mouser will get here, read this, and come up with an immediate explanation :)

tablaji:
I'd hardly say that's a "very very minor" problem. Let's try to figure this out:
Was it like that when you installed farr? Or did it appear after you changed the size of the text?
Do you have any program to increase the size of the icons somewhere? (like a desktop enhancer or something like that)
Does the small icon view in farr also have icons too big? (to see that view, just add "+sall" to your search)

I've attached an image of my windows explorer with icon view. Could you please check if your icons have the same size? How about the icons on your Desktop?

Thanks a lot!

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR V2 core alias tables
« Last post by jgpaiva on July 25, 2007, 03:13 PM »
Here you go, Grorgy!

Glad you like this table :)
2421
The reason for existance of those variables is that those numbers are variable from computer to computer (depending on the resolution), and variable depending on your monitor setup.

Monitor1, is always the primary monitor. Thus, its Top and Left are always zero. Its Right and Bottom are always equal to Left+Width and Top+Height, respectivelly.

BUT, on monitor 2, things don't work like that. That's because Monitor2 is placed on a relative position to Monitor1.
In your case, with 2 monitors, if you have Monitor2 on the right, the Left will be 1601, or.. Monitor1Top + Monitor1Width + 1. The Top will be the same as Monitor1, 0.
If you have it on the left, its left would be -1601, because it'd be Monitor1Top - Monitor1Width -1. The Top would remain the same.

You can now imagine how things can get messy if you'd have 2 monitors with different resolutions, and not horizontally aligned (like i do ;) ).

The idea behind having grids defined like this is that you don't have to do this math, GridMove does it for you. Also, if you use those variables, you can share your grids with others, because it isn't hardcoded for your resolution.

PS: to better understand what i mean, please try doing the following procedure:
Go to "Display Properties" -> Settings tab, then, just click and drag one of the monitors. That allows you to get them on the left, on the right, on top, bottom or even "southwest", "southeast", etc

edbro: from reading that wiki page, i think there's no way to append entire folders.
I don't have jriver, thus can't test it, but maybe the following works:
Play | MC12.exe /PlayReplace "$$1*"
Append | MC12.exe /Append "$$1*"
Back | restartsearch m $$c
So that the command line would be, for example: c:\music\*. Not sure if it'd solve the problem, though.

Find And Run Robot / Re: new launcher just released
« Last post by jgpaiva on July 24, 2007, 06:19 PM »
I think i'll give some help, since mouser is busy right now.

#1:
index: Yep, no index, and you're right as it needs to be done. Still won't be included in V2, though.
  adaptive search: done ;)
non-contiguous search: not done (i also find it a bit confusing), but multi-word works (f f would find firefox)

#2:
better look: I've talked with mouser just yesterday about this. It indeed does make a difference for many people, and it'd probably get more people to use farr, BUT, the time it'd take to change the looks would probably be better spent in improving other parts of farr, at the expense of losing some "costumers" because of the looks.
Also, farr's looks have been dramaticaly improved with the new "large icons display", even though it still isn't as eye-candy as the competitors.
IMO, even more important than the looks, are the webpage and the screencasts, which make a huge difference on first contact with farr.

#3:
  simple/advanced mode: done.
  default configurations:
making google searches, opening firefox/explorer bookmarks, finding start menu items, being able to navigate and find the most important system folders (my documents, etc) out of the box should be a priority.

yep, all of those work out of the box, although the bookmarks part is done through a plugin, which might not be included in the default package (not sure, as this is mouser's decision).
Another way to solve this problem would be to just carry farr on your usb disk, since farr is fully portable ;)

Also, farr can now work as a calculator, a process killer, a clipboard enhancement, a service starter/stopper, program unninstaller, etc etc etc, all through plugins.

As for the name... I do agree that there could be better names, but i think it's a bit late to be changed.

Thank you for your post, amadawn, it has contributed in 2 ways: to remember what else still needs to be done, and how well farr is now compared to other launchers :)
Quoting mouser on our conversation (i hope he won't get upset ;) ):
<mouser> it IS a very huge leap from v1
<mouser> in fact when i think on v1 now i get sick
Maybe you should take a look at farr V2 beta, or wait for its grand launch next week. I think you'll be positivelly surprised :D
2425
Interesting... I had no idea that could be done for usb disks.
Pretty cool solution, PitrPaulus.. Thanks for letting us know! ;)
