Living Room / Re: Timeline Software
« Last post by mouser on March 01, 2008, 12:30 AM »
in all fairness - i've seen a LOT of forums where if an author comes out in a straightforward fashion and says "i think my program would be useful for this, here is the url: ..." then the very next posts are accusing them of being a SPAMMER.

personally i think that's just silly that an author can't suggest his/her own program if it's appropriate, but i've seen it quite a bit, so i can understand authors thinking that they shouldn't reveal any association with their product when recommending it.

but anyway, it's not the case on this forum -- we welcome authors to join and *when appropriate* mention their own software.  it is important that they do so within reason.  no one is going to be happy with someone who is constantly plugging their own software if that's all they do here and they jump at any remote chance to do so.  but as long as you are respectful and not obnoxious you are welcome.

what operating system are you using?
it would be nice to uninstall goscreen if possible and see if that solves it.

f0dder's guess about what is happening is pretty good.
check the search directories for FARR in its options.

you could also try clearing your farr launch history and restarting it and see if the problem is gone.

this would be a good case to use a virtual machine (virtualpc, vmware, etc), let it install into C: as it wants, then copy the raw files to your real pc and see if it runs ok without being formally installed.

as tinjaw says, unlike most forums we encourage software authors to post about their programs when appropriate, we just ask that you identify yourself.

be nicer if it just learnt to avoid dead links or something?
that's what's a little weird -- FARR has code to avoid network links so this doesn't happen, but maybe there is something different about one of your links that is fooling it -- that's kind of why i'd like to know which shortcut(s) are confusing it.

you could have just told farr not to search your desktop.

figure out which shortcuts are causing farr to freeze and let me know so we can figure out what's going wrong.

to help you figure it out, check the option to show subdirs while searching:

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR freezing?
« Last post by mouser on February 29, 2008, 08:08 AM »
Seems to be 'most of the time' at the moment.. Got a feeling it's cos only half my network has been built so far (moved house) so there are dead shortcuts on my desktop etc. Any way I can stop FARR from going for network links?

i believe you have found the problem, why it is freezing.
it's hitting some shortcuts that are not resolving, and the search is pausing as it hits those shortcuts and tries to resolve them.

now, the new version of FARR is supposed to ignore network links, but it's possible you might have links that are fooling FARR into thinking they are local (mapped drives maybe), or some other circumstance that is confusing FARR into trying to resolve those links..

If for some inexplicable reason one decides to try other programs, the FARR help file has a huge list of similar programs at the end of it  :D

very good idea -- does anyone know is there an easy way to open a commandline in a specific directory, or do i need to add a general purpose ability to change to a specific directory when specifying an alias?

its a good idea, but can't be done yet --
i think i'll try to add an option for it if i can figure out a good general way to do it.

Find And Run Robot / Re: sync across machines?
« Last post by mouser on February 28, 2008, 06:20 PM »
FARR uses plain text files to save its settings -- if you add the aliases directory to the list of directories you sync across machines it should work fine.

facebook makes millions on ads.  that seems to be the revenue for 99% of all sites that dont "sell" their users anything.  this is the house that google built, and it seems like its the future for the web.

i suspect its some setting in your ff preferences that doesnt get deleted when you uninstall and reinstall.  try creating a new FF profile or uninstalling FF and all profiles. then reinstalling.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Screenshot Captor License Key Saved
« Last post by mouser on February 28, 2008, 10:11 AM »
if i understand correctly, when you say "Ever since then, whenever I open Screenshot Captor a small window pops up that says License Key Saved", what you mean is every time you restore it from the tray.

that window should have an OK box to close it, try clicking on the window and hitting Enter.

in the worst case, until i fix the display of that box, you should still be able to KILL screenshot captor from running (hit ctrl+alt+delete and find ScreenshotCaptor.exe and terminate it).  When you restart the program you shouldn't see the window anymore.
