if you run it, configure it, then exit it manually, then restart.
does it remember it's settings then?

there is a known issue where settings are forgotten at time of reboot -- which is why manually exiting once can solve the problem.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: FillCD equivalent
« Last post by mouser on March 18, 2008, 06:16 PM »
Since most cd burning programs allow files to be dragged and dropped from a file explorer, perhaps the most efficient interface for such a utility would be if it presented the file lists for a cd in a form that supported source-drag.  in other words, the utility should present the list of files for a cd so you can simply select them and drag them to your cd burning tool.

Free Software Magazine is a very nice website that discusses mainstream open source developments and issues, and frequently writes about funding issues for small open source developers.  Here's a nice piece on funding of larger projects.

... Myth #4
“Free software is great, but some projects take real money. There’s no way the community can raise those funds.”

The truth is that it is hard for the free culture community to raise actual cash for projects, but it has been done. And there are parallels with mainstream culture that suggest it can be taken even further.
Starting commercial with Blender

A number of large-scale projects in the free software world—such as Mozilla, Zope, OpenOffice.org, and Blender—started out as fairly standard commercial/proprietary development projects. During their incubation phase, the simplicity and structure of a commercial environment with capital investment and salaried programmers made their development fairly straightforward. It was only after these programs had released operational software that their supporting companies made the decision to go to free software distribution.
...
Communities certainly can raise funds if the community is large enough and there is a high level of trust that the contributions will produce results. The free culture community has about an order of magnitude to go to catch up to such mainstream funding levels, but there’s every reason to believe that the potential for that kind of growth is there.

it's been generally agreed on this forum that we would avoid political arguments, no matter which side you are on.
i'd like to ask everyone to respect that.
political debate is healthy, but this forum is not the place for it.
if you see a thread in the future that you believe is going against this policy please feel free to message me.

tinjaw you arguably started us off with your first reply on this bad path, you should know better

The theory of Long Tail Economics is an influential idea that deals with finding a large enough audience that are outside of the mainstream, and the increasing degree to which technology is making is feasible for people to make money in that niche.  In a real sense, DonationCoder.com lives in the long tail area.

Here's a nice piece by Kevin Kelly discussing some specifics of how artsits might approach trying to make a living in the Long Tail marketplace by focusing on "True Fans."

But the long tail is a decidedly mixed blessing for creators. Individual artists, producers, inventors and makers are overlooked in the equation. The long tail does not raise the sales of creators much, but it does add massive competition and endless downward pressure on prices. Unless artists become a large aggregator of other artist's works, the long tail offers no path out of the quiet doldrums of minuscule sales.

Other than aim for a blockbuster hit, what can an artist do to escape the long tail? One solution is to find 1,000 True Fans...

If you like the Knytt games, check out "Pieces" which has a lot of fun personality and a female protagonist.  i especially like how she discovers new abilitities.

well delete = quarantine.  it auto deletes the file but keeps a copy in its quarantine safe that you can restore (but only after the virus update declares it clean a few days after the original detection).

but the main thing that needs to change is:
1. the antivirus programs have to be honest about how confident the program is that it has found something dangerous
2. it has to give the user useful info and allow them to decide what to do.
23868
Hi Peter,

Welcome to the site, and welcome to the club of coders who are having their reputations damaged by this outrageous behavior.

This episode was particularly grevious because not only did it tell people that there was this virus but then automatically deleted files without warning or question.  Can you imagine if the program was actually performing some critical function? Not cool.

The only think I know to do is try to get information out there to the users so that the blame and anger is properly focused on these antivirus companies and not us!

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR- how do I do this...?
« Last post by mouser on March 17, 2008, 03:22 AM »
easy solution here, though its something most people also don't know how to do:
  • put the exact list of programs you want to show when farr window pops up inside an alias of your own creation.
  • i.e. create a new alias and add the programs you want to it (there are a couple of ways to do this, by right clicking in results, or dragging and dropping into the alias window, or browsing, etc.  see help file for more info).
  • you can reorder the items in an alias however you want, and you can even provide custom captions for them.
  • ok now you have an alias with the programs of your choosing, in the order of your choosing.
  • so now to make it show in the farr window each time farr is brought on screen, go to the hotkeys tab and edit the hotkey trigger you normally use (or make a new one just for this), and put the name of the alias in your "Text for Search Edit Box" field.  You probably also want to choose "Highlight search edit text" to make it easier to overwrite this default.
  • all done!

I will note one thing that has been suggested by others and which i want to add.  This method fills the search box with some starting text (the alias name), and then highlights it so you can start typing a new search to override it right away.  while not functionally different, some have requested (and i concur) an option that doesnt actually show the initial text in the search box, since that would be a bit cleaner looking.  it's on my todo list.

let me know if you get this trick to work!
it's actually a really fun trick to use with FARR if you configure different hotkeys to bring up different starting lists.

ps.
for reallllly advanced FARR users, you could even make an alias show initially which just acted like a list of submenus, each of which showed another list when triggered (see the dosearch special alias command).

The Rockford Files and Baretta were great.
BUT there should be a law against mentioning those in a post and not mentioning "Starsky and Hutch" which as even better.

i think you have a good point.  maybe i'll move what is #1 to maybe #3 and add a couple before it like:

Assignment 1: make a button that can be clicked.
Assignment 2: make the button move around on screen and play a sound when clicked.

To follow up, it looks like McCafee pushed out an update as promised that stops labels the programs as having generic.dx infection.

McAfee users can now reinstall the same programs, or even just restore them from quarantine area of McAfee control center (Restore->Files).
