In an age of information overload, a site like this which focuses on a single good overlooked book/movie/mediaitem, seems like a great idea.

Very Short List (VSL) is a free, daily e-mail that points to excellent new (and sometimes vintage) entertainment and media that haven’t been hyped to within an inch of their lives. Each weekday, we tell our subscribers about a single recommended gem from among the vast pile of feature films and documentaries (in theatres and on DVD), television shows, novels, nonfiction books, magazine articles, Websites and services, CDs, radio programs, and more. The focus is on products that really deserve attention but haven’t already been subject to giant media pile-ons.

Or, to put it another way: We write about things we’ve discovered that please us so much that we can’t wait to tell other people about them.

Newsletter for April 23rd, 2008
Codename "Summer Feathers"

"If you read nothing else on our site, read our BLOG"
(new rss feed with images)

1. Newsletter Editorial

Hi everyone and welcome to another edition of the DonationCoder.com newsletter.  It's been almost a month since the last newsletter so there are a lot of noteworthy posts to tell you about (we'll be resuming our twice-monthly newsletter schedule soon).  I've been working on freelance projects for the last several months to pay the bills, but my plan is to spend a couple of months starting at the end of May working on new software updates and releases for DonationCoder.  Until then, maybe we need to figure out other ways to encourage the programmers who hang out on the site, and new programmers who haven't found us yet, to participate and share some of their creations.  If you have any ideas for how we might do this, or any ideas about how to improve the site in general, please let us know.
-mouser

2. Your Input Requested

A warm welcome to all the members that have joined over the last month.  Here are some good topics to make your debut post on.  Don't be shy, just jump right in, we are always happy to hear from new people.

3. April 2008 Discounts

Because of this month's late newsletter, you only have a week to take advantage of the 30% discount on Linkman and other Outertech.com products.  Check out the minireview by DC member KenR to read more about the program.

4. DonationCoder.com Software

Lots more new Find and Run Robot plugins to tell you about this month, and a couple of coders on our site got some recognition too: Skrommel's utilities were mentioned in a PC Magazine article, and mouser's Screenshot Captor get recommended as best Screenshot Tool for advanced users. Woot!

5. Mini-Reviews by Members

Mini-reviews are a great resource for people researching software solutions and may be found on a dedicated Mini-Review Board.  Please remember to acknowledge the efforts of the reviewers with a few donationcredits if you find their reviews interesting and/or helpful.

6. Fun, Games, and Humour

One of the things that makes the forum a nice place to hang out is that there is a good balance of serious expert discussion and just plain silly fun.  There are always a few truly sublime discoveries posted by DC members every month, and this month was no exception.

7. Living Room

The Living Room section of the forum is where we discuss general issues that don't belong anywhere else.  It's kind of a catch-all section -- lots of website discoveries and recommendations, etc.

8. General Software Discussion

Almost half the posts on the forum fall into the category of general software discussions, questions, recommendations, etc.

9. Specific Software Discussion

This section of the newsletter draws some attention to a few noteworthy specific programs mentioned on the forum since the last newsletter.

10. Developer's Corner

A pretty thin set of posts in the Developer's Corner section this month -- why is that?  Remember that this section isn't just for computer programmers, it's for entrepreneurs of all kinds to discuss the issues involving creating things and running a small business.

Image Manager Shootout / Xnview vs. IrfanView - integrity issue examined
« Last post by mouser on April 23, 2008, 11:00 AM »
irfanview was alone at the top for a long time with speed and power that just knocked your socks of, and is a fantastic achievement.

xnview is a great program and I remember that when Nudone was doing his massive review of graphics management tools, xnview and irfanview were neck and neck in terms of recommendations.

Both irfanview and xnview continue to be updated regularly.

It's clear from using the programs that xnview is certainly not a clone of irfanview.  I don't use either program all that much, so i can't really address the issue of options dialogs -- it's possible that xnview may be leaning on the work of irfanview too much in that area, i can't say.

It's hard as a programmer to see stuff you've worked on copied by others.. you feel like you've spent a lot of time coming up with such, and then someone just comes along and copies it (and often improves it!).. it can be frustrating.

Steven this is an issue worthy of discussion -- so i'm going to split your post off into it's own thread if you don't mind.

Another useful roundup from our friends at Cybernetnews, discussing a variety of copy and paste helper extensions for the Firefox web browser.  I only knew about half of these and I'll be that commenters will have even more to suggest.

With the help of some Firefox extensions we’re going to demonstrate how something as simple as copying and pasting can be taken to a new level! I’m sure you’ll find at least one or two extensions that can make you more productive. Here are our top 10 Firefox extensions for copying and pasting

Important follow up from the author via a discussion with an artist who is trying the approach:
http://www.kk.org/th...4/the_reality_of.php

Some notable excerpts:
I agree strongly with your basic thesis [of a thousand True Fans], that artists can survive on the cusp of the long tail by nurturing the help of dedicated fans; but perhaps I can modulate your welcome optimism with a light dose of realism, tempered by some personal reflections.

The sort of artist who survives at the long tail is the sort who would be happy doing nothing else, who willingly sacrifices security and comfort for the chance to communicate something meaningful, hoping to catch the attention of those few in the world who seek what they also find meaningful. It's a somewhat solitary existence, a bit like a lighthouse keeper throwing a beam out into the darkness, in faith that this action might help someone unseen.

A further caveat: it's easy to get trapped into the expectations of these True Fans, and with such a tenuous income stream, an artist risks poverty by pushing too far beyond the boundaries of style or preconceptions.

I'm going to have to add a link to this "tutorial" on the FARR homepage.. I hope it doesn't drive too many people insane..

General Software Discussion / Re: Animated Drawing
« Last post by mouser on April 22, 2008, 04:44 PM »
No one has found a program that does this yet?  Surely it must exist.
There are some amazing plugins and graphics programs that will make any photo look like a hand painted piece of art.  The best of these tools do operate by simulating the drawing of strokes of paint.  Surely someone must have taken this to the next logical level and made something that animates the process, no?

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR Plugin with fscript
« Last post by mouser on April 22, 2008, 04:37 PM »
Congratulations on attempting this jpprater!

Your question is very similar to the one raised by kartal here: https://www.donation....msg110539#msg110539

I think what we need is a nice sample regex which can accept any number of multiple space (or comma) separated arguments.  and if its possible to design a regex where double quotes around an argument allows it to contain spaces?

Im not much of a regex expert but i can try to whip something up if the true regex experts dont chime in.

If we come up with a good general purpose regex for this ill put something in the dialog so users can choose this easily.

General Software Discussion / Cool Free Color Picker Tools
« Last post by mouser on April 22, 2008, 12:43 PM »
Cybernetnews has a nice mini roundup of free color picker tools today.

I knew about and like Color Cop, but the other two (ColorPic and ColorMania are new to me).  Also mentioned are a few online tools.

And don't miss the comments for a few more user-suggested color tools, including one by DC member Veign (Pixeur).

the lack of in pane editor was the greatest weakness of version 2, so it's definitely great news.
btw: version 3 will be released for linux, so this is big news for the linux crowd.

Find And Run Robot / Re: How do you pass multiple arguments?
« Last post by mouser on April 21, 2008, 04:34 AM »
Probably regex stuff is very powerful but it makes simple operations complicated  if you do not know much about it. I use launchy as well and I do not need extra expression stuff to pass simple arguments. I wish there was an option for simplified operations like the one I am trying to achieve.

you have a good point there.. perhaps i should include some sample regex that one can select if one just wants to have it trigger on standard space separated arguments, etc.

The addition of secure ftp support is a HUGE addition for me, thought testing in previous versions would crash on me.  Not sure if it's stable yet.  When it is, it will be a great thing.

Don't miss the long review of Beyond Compare version 2 on DC:
