FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: TodoTXT
« Last post by mouser on April 25, 2008, 10:21 PM »
the first thing im going to add to the next FARR release in the next couple of weeks is that  plugins will be sent special keypresses to react to if they want (Enter, tab, pageup, pagedown, alt+# keys, etc).  this will allow advanced plugins to do better stuff. i think i'll also try to add a "idle" signal, so that a plugin will be notified when the user hasnt typed anything for 500ms or so, in case they want to do a background update of memo contents.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Slowed Down My PC
« Last post by mouser on April 25, 2008, 09:06 PM »
It can't be Screenshot Captor that is causing this problem.  The program simply does not install any system files or services or anything that could possibly do it.

I don't doubt that you are having the problem but it can't be related to Screenshot Captor.

See if you can't figure out if there is a single process causing the slowdown (hit ctrl+alt+delete and sort the Processes list by the CPU column and see if you spot something using up a good chunk of the cpu).

It could also be your antivirus or firewall, since these are programs that are always running and tend to auto-update and so problems can start spontaneously.

One thing you could try if you suspect its a firewall or antivirus issue would be to disconnect from the internet and uninstall your antivirus and firewall, then see if the speed problem is fixed, and then try installing different ones.

Also make sure you allow your laptop plenty of time to start up before you start expecting it to behave at top speed -- windows needs some initial time to load everything into memory, etc.

i dont think its clashing with sqlnotes.  it's clearly something in the recording of the timestamp on clips.
if nothing else then maybe i can build some logging functionality that will help us track it down.

let's talk in private message and try to work this out rather than doing it on this thread.

Ok i've resubmitted another request to mcafee.. it may be that they fixed it for Screenshot Captor but are using another signature that is still alerting on CHS.

I think i'm going to write up a little blog entry and suggest that we start a boycott campaign against McAfee until they put in place some better procedure for vetting new virus signatures.

Developer's Corner / Re: SkyIDE - Latest Release Information
« Last post by mouser on April 25, 2008, 04:19 AM »
You took on a HUGE project -- amazing what you managed to create.  And no doubt you learn a hell of a lot.

I do think you should take a little break and step back and figure out where you want to go with this, and how much work you really want to continue to put into it and where you want to go with it.  It's one of those projects that seems like so much work given how attached people are to their existing IDEs.. Consider how much pleasure it brings you to work on it vs other projects you might work on if you put SkyIDE down and pick up a next project that might not be quite so huge.

in all fairness, i don't think you are the only one with this problem -- the download link is sort of "hidden in plain sight" and many people expect it somewhere in the main panel.

Official Announcements / DC Server Accessibility Problem - April 24th 2008
« Last post by mouser on April 24, 2008, 06:37 AM »
Some people are experiencing problems reaching the DonationCoder.com website today (April 24th 2008).  Pages are only partially loading for certain people or just hanging and timing out while loading.

It's not actually a problem with our server, but seems to be some kind of internet routing problem effecting only certain people (including me!), and affecting only certain routes of information transfer on the web.

We will update you as soon as we learn more.

It seems to me that the Free Software Magazine website has started to turn out more interesting and relevant articles recently.

Here's a very readable piece on the newly announced Google App Engine, that takes a decidedly balanced and middle-of-the-road look at Google's policies and aims.

Make no mistake: Google App Engine is designed to make Google profit, not serve the public good. They could have based their service entirely on free software, and contributed any improvements they felt were needed, back to the projects that have supplied them with the tools for economic success. But they haven’t provided such a fully-capable system in the GAE SDK. So they’re not making it easy for you to deploy elsewhere—they definitely want deploying on Google to be the path of least resistance.

Is that “evil”? Well, no, not really. But it isn’t exactly “good” either. Which means, if you’re a developer, you have to make the same tightrope decision: will you choose convenience and merely try to “not be evil”, or will you choose freedom and try to actively “do good”? I can’t condemn either option, but you should make the choice with your eyes open.

BTW, Is the site having problems tonight?

Yes!
But it's not the server.. It's a much larger internet backbone that's gone down.  I suspect we'll all hear more about it in the morning but there seems to be a fairly large outage on the internet tubes.  We've just spend an hour in our irc channel (#donationcoder on efnet) talking and investigating.

This page shows a little bit about the problem: http://www.internetpulse.net/

Maybe this entry of our help desk will help:
https://www.donation...er.com/Help/entry/1/

It sounds like you aren't sure just where to put the license key, if so:
  • Start screenshot captor.
  • If its in the tray, right-click the blue monitor icon and choose the "About (Enter License Key)" menu item at bottom.  Or you can bring up the main window and choose this menu item from the Help menu.
  • Then click the button on the left to Enter New License Key info.
  • Paste your license key in and click Accept button.
  • All done.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Hotkeys/keyboard macros??
« Last post by mouser on April 23, 2008, 03:43 PM »
I think i understand what you are asking..
Do you mean you have some clips with some of your own boilerplate extra text, and some embedded date info, and you want to be able to easily paste those?  Ok let me think about that.  It's definitely in the realm of what the traditional text-expander programs do, so we are starting to blur the lines here between a clipboard helper tool and a text expander, that's the only issue to be concerned with.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: QuickNote Add???
« Last post by mouser on April 23, 2008, 03:38 PM »
The reason i never really got around to adding it is because it became clear to me that CHS should not try to compete with the hierarchical notetaking applications.  I originally thought i might make it a combo cliptool and notetaking app.

However, thinking about the issue a little more here is what i was thinking:
What if i added a kind of reduced functionality quick-add clip feature.  When triggered it just lets you paste in some text, and it copies this text to the clipboard and adds it to the recent clips group.  So basically it's just a really quick and dirty way to add a clip to the list.  Maybe with checkbox to flag it as a favorite.

Thoughts?

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Opening CH+S From Systray? Hotkeys?
« Last post by mouser on April 23, 2008, 03:34 PM »
Well i think it would actually improve things if there was a hotkey that:
1) brought up the main window
2) focused cursor in the search window
3) cleared any existing search text.
4) closed when you double click a clip item to paste into your last application.

The idea being that this hotkey would be used to facilitate quick search+paste.

I will think about the ability to assign hotkeys to certain clips.
As for pasting dates, one of the features that got added to CHS in the last release was date/time formatting pasting menu items:
Screenshot - 4_23_2008 , 3_23_11 PM.png
In the options you can even specify a completely custom date/time format, and choose where the data/time formatting presets are displayed.

Does that solve your data/time request?

My online test at VirusTotal shows mcafee not reporting any problems, so i think they have fixed their signatures.  If you are using the latest update from mcafee you shouldnt have any trouble.
