Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Mini-Review of FileBoss

Welcome to the site Dexter, and thanks for the constructive clarifications -- it's always nice to see an author stop by

Bleh.. popularity is not the goal.. i'm not making a special version for that purpose :)

FARR already has a default beginner options mode anyway.

I think there are lots of ways to improve the usability of FARR, lot's of ways to make it better, etc.  Let's not worry about popularity of our programs and just concentrate on making them the best.

As a meta comment, here is some advice to lifehacker and other websites that conduct polls like this:

If you want to know which programs are the most popular among (registered) users of your site, then it's fine to ask your users what they use and like.

If you want to know which programs are "best" -- then you have to make an effort to ask people who have tried all/most of the programs and have an informed opinion about which ones they prefer over others.  If you feature one program over and over on your site, you shouldn't be surprised to see a heavy bias among your users in favor of the one you've been talking about -- since for many of your readers, that's the only launcher they've ever tried (based on hearing about it from your previous stories).

Anyway, that's not to say that Launchy isn't excellent or that these people voting wouldn't prefer it above others if they tried.. It's just that there is a certain flaw in the logic of conducting a poll of this sort.  It's also why we need more sites for informed comparative reviews rather than popularity polls.

It's kind of sad how little mention there is of Find and Run Robot in that Lifehacker poll.. I'm a little taken aback..  :(

Find And Run Robot / Re: Running multiple commands with one alias
« Last post by mouser on May 21, 2008, 07:42 AM »
ok putting this on my todo list.
23331
Wow Launchy is completely dominating the comments.  Haven't seen a blowout like that in a while.  Can't tell how much of that is because it has gotten so much attention on lifehacker in the past, and how much of it is from people who have really tried everything and decided they like Launchy the best.  Strange.

I appreciate vitalyb starting this thread -- If you use Find and Run Robot and like it, and prefer it to the others, it's nice if you say so.  At least a few people who read into the comments will learn about FARR for the first time.

Yes i keep meaning to fix this in some way -- changing the label to Opacity is a good idea and i'm going to do that, sanks for suggestion.

I haven't heard it a thousand times but it is a running joke around here and on the web.. It's not the first time my bad spelling has proved to be a public embarrassment.  :P

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Configuring user tools

rjbull got it right -- there are no predefined user tools to download, it's a mechanism for configuring your own commandline tools to work with CHS.

thanks for the nice example rj, i might put that in the help file if you don't mind

Thanks for the info johnny, i'm going to try to address the browsertrayswitch soon i just have to handle a few other more pressing matters first.

As for the FF3, that's not good.. looks like css stylesheet is not being used properly.. i'll have to try to figure out why.

Ah.. very cool..
So now we can add custom reg keys, so things like the borland/codegear package lists, and include/lib paths can be played with.. very nice!!

If everyone feels like they've had their say sufficiently, I'd like to simply remind everyone that this is becoming a political thread, and we've all agreed that we will keep this forum free of political stuff..

that's pretty clever use.. though i'm not sure if you are really creating a 2nd instance of FARR when you do that..
if so then i could easily add code to avoid that and have it just trigger the current instance.

you asked about having farr come up with your custom alias:
  • create your alias of choice and populate its results with the commands you want in your initial "menu" of choices
  • then go to the hotkeys section, edit the hotkey trigger of your choice,
  • and specify the alias name in the "Text for search edit Box
  • now when you trigger FARR up will pop that menu or command, etc.
  • you could also of course make a hotkey that pops up with "pskill " in the text box.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Quick plugin question
« Last post by mouser on May 18, 2008, 04:42 PM »
you need to use a regular expression just as the ld example above, so the regular expression would be
Browse (.*)
and the result would be
Browse C Drive | dosearch C:\ $$1

DesktopCoral / Re: Must close to play games
« Last post by mouser on May 18, 2008, 02:11 PM »
there is no way to do that, BUT it could be possible to:
1) make it easy to manually disable/re-enable desktop coral temporarily.
2) make desktop coral detect when a full screen app starts and disable itself automatically when it does.

another possibility is you can create a custom alias group with your favorite commands, and have it shown when farr comes up.
