Find And Run Robot / Re: Alias with a space in the name not working
« Last post by mouser on June 08, 2008, 07:55 AM »
im afraid this is true, farr does not match alias names with spaces properly.  i have on my todo list to decide how to handle this, but you can use regular expression match as nitrix said to get around the limittion for now.

Find And Run Robot / Re: How to increase scoring of item ?
« Last post by mouser on June 08, 2008, 07:53 AM »
So I type +200 in "IE" score, that sticks but I realise it's not enough so I again type +200 but that doesnt make any difference.. On next farr launch I type +200 again for IE - again it doesnt stick - so I type +2000 and that sticks.

i think your problem may be in a misunderstanding of how this is working.

when you add a score in this way, what's happening is the FARR is simply helping you make an entry on the tab called "Pattern Scoring" in the options.  so go check out that tab to see what your scoring patterns look like.  you aren't adding 200 each time, you are setting it to 200 each time.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Today is release day !!!

indeed i will release a new beta version today, though you shouldn't expect much excitement unless you are a plugin coder.  but it is significant in the sense that it marks the start of me jump starting farr development.  updates should start coming much more frequenlty after today.

Site/Forum Features / Re: Nofollow tags added to all external links
« Last post by mouser on June 07, 2008, 09:19 PM »
After some discussion in the chat channel, I'm thinking of the following compromise based on the comments in this thread.

After some number N posts (maybe 25 or so), all links in a user's posts will no longer have nofollow attribute.  This is a reflection of that fact that after that many posts the user is not a spammer and the links they post are likely to be relevant to the forum thread/page.

Maybe a manual ability to add nofollow to a link should also be possible, though im not sure what the point of that would be.

Links in signatures will always have NOFOLLOW attribute, based on the fact that such links are not likely to be relevant to the thread, and based on the fact that people with large numbers of posts will basically be creating large numbers of links that are not relevant.

EDIT: I wouldn't be surprised if google hadn't already figured out that links in signatures or on forums should be disregarded in terms of pagerank stuff, so this whole idea may be moot.

Find And Run Robot / Re: How to increase scoring of item ?

you are just adding a score for the item, not setting a fixed score for it regardless of what you type.  but it should never ever result in a reduced score.  try setting it to something very high like 5000 and see the effect.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Before you write a Mini-Review Read This
« Last post by mouser on June 07, 2008, 08:06 AM »
Some guidelines:
  • Please use the mini-review template so that your mini-review is formatted nicely.
  • Please attach images rather than linking them offsite
  • Please read our policy about ensuring no conflict-of-interest between you and the company you are writing about.

Conflict of Interest issues for Reviewers:
  • We will not tolerate anyone getting any payment in return for writing a review.  If we find out that someone on our forum has been given some payment in return for writing a review we will take every step possible to call out the company and writer and make sure that the consequences outweigh any possible ill-gotten benefits. [important note: as discussed on the forum several times, we do not have a problem with a reviewer getting a free copy of the program being reviewed for their own personal use, as this does not present an incentive to write a good review of a bad product and seems fair].
  • We will not tolerate any pressure on a company to give a discount in order to get a positive mini-review.
  • No one with any other conflict of interest or relationship with a developer that would bias a review should be writing a review without clearly stating their relationship and biases up front.

23160
Good point.  Let me clarify my thinking on discounts for reviewed items:

It's very common for us to contact a company that has received a positive mini-review on the forum to see if they want to offer a discount to DC members, since it's likely to be a program that forum members may want.

What we do not allow in any manner, shape, or form is:
  • We will not tolerate anyone getting any payment in return for writing a review.  If we find out that someone on our forum has been given some payment in return for writing a review we will take every step possible to call out the company and writer and make sure that the consequences outweigh any possible ill-gotten benefits. [important note: as discussed on the forum several times, we do not have a problem with a reviewer getting a free copy of the program being reviewed for their own personal use, as this does not present an incentive to write a good review of a bad product and seems fair].

Just to be realistic, I don't think there is a chance in hell we will make this list.
I think the real goal is just to try to make some little progress towards getting PC Magazine to realize we exist.  Every little bit helps.

i may have fixed it in the new not-yet-released version and not rememberd that it's only recently been fixed.

i contacted them a while ago and asked for (and got) a discount for dc members after i had such a great experience with the program and bought my own copy at normal prices.  so i finally got off my a** and wrote the minireview since i thought i better explain what this program is for otherwise no one would even understand why i asked for the discount :)

Intro:

WebDrive is system utility which allows you to connect to an ftp server and map it to look like a local drive on your PC.  This let's you use any program on your PC that works with local files work with your ftp sites even if they are not internet-enabled.

sssitemgr.gif

Who is this app designed for:

This is a program that will only appeal to a small number of people with specific needs for interfacing to an ftp site, but it is an incredibly sophisticated and well-designed application, which can be a life saver if you have a use for it.

I came across it while looking for a way to use a file/folder comparison tool (Beyond Compare) with an ftp server.  Although the comparison tool I use supports connecting to ftp sites directly, it does not support FTPES, a more advanced encrypted ftp protocol.  WebDrive does support FTPES as well as SFTP and others.  Not using encryption was not an option, so I was desperate for a way to interface my existing tools with the ftp server in a secure manner.

WebDrive allows me to use this file comparison tool to compare and transfer changed files with ftp server in a completely transparent way, and was the only tool I found that could do the job well.

The Good

WebDrive has a lot of options, a big user manual, tons of features, commandline support, and other stuff that experts may care about -- but most importantly is that it works straight out of the box with no tweaking required.  You can map multiple ftp servers to different drives, use proxies.

I want to mention one of the most pleasantly surprising aspects of the program.  After i purchased WebDrive a new version of Beyond Compare came out with built-in ftpes support.  So I thought that I wouldn't have much use for WebDrive after that.  Boy was I wrong.

First of all, ftpes support in Beyond Compare is currently buggy, whereas WebDrive seems flawless.

But more important was the unexpected utility of the cache system in WebDrive.

Basically, WebDrive maintains a local cache on your hard drive of files on the ftp server.  It uses a variety of mechanisms and options to decide when a cached file needs to be re-downloaded.  It's perfect if you are the only person uploading files to the ftp -- if not you have to be a little more careful.

The use of the cache means that most of the time you can work with files on the ftp server virtually, without actually incurring any transfer bandwidth and at blazing speed.  Only when you modify a file will it automatically be uploaded or downloaded from the ftp.  The effect of this on tools like file/folder comparison tools is huge, and it all happens automatically.

Supports connecting to FTP, SFTP, FTPES, WEBDAV, Amazon S3, FrontPage, GroupDrive.

Scheduled file synchronizing

As I noted in my post below, WebDrive also has an excellent scheduled download/upload/sync feature that will connect to an account and transfer new/changed files.

The needs improvement section

This is one of those tools that has a very narrow focus, and does it's job extremely well.  Hard to think of missing features.  I did have a serious conflict with Eset Smart Security firewall in the past and I'm not sure if that has been fixed yet.

Not suitable as a full ftp client because it lacks functions that you would need like permission changing, queuing, etc.  This is a very specialized tool for people who know they need it, not a tool for the average pc user.

Previous versions (version 8) had a truly horrific uninstallation procedure for window x64.  New versions (version 10) are fine.

How does it compare to similar apps

Some similar programs:
  • NetDrive - have not tried it -- just discovered it and it is half price -- worth checking out before you buy WebDrive.
  • ftpdrive - free but not maintained (seems a little bit buggy).
  • SftpDrive - the main commercial competitor to WebDrive, cheaper, available for mac.  Looks good but not as powerful, and less protocols supported.

Conclusions

If you maintain files on an ftp server and would like to be able to interface your windows applications to the files on the server as if they were on a local drive -- especially if you would like to do file synchronization with the ftp server, then you owe it to yourself to check out WebDrive.  It has made my life a lot easier.

To run a batch file, you must start the command interpreter; set lpApplicationName to cmd.exe and set lpCommandLine to the name of the batch file.

ok well that explains some of our crosstalk.. you probably wont be surprised to hear that i do not do that.  i just set applicationname to the batch file name, and the OS is figuring out to launch cmd.exe.

i'll try to get this comspec support in next version, once we decide the answers to my previous questions.

thanks for the sample code, i appreciate it.

right ok, well i'm quite happy to check for the launching of .bat files and use %comspec% when launching them.. the only real question is whether i should just do that always, or do i need an option to let the user say they do NOT want %comspec% being used, and would prefer default of cmd.exe.

second question, assuming i want to just let the OS do it's default when an alternate command shell isn't specified, can i check %comspec% and tell if a replacement shell has been configured.  i.e. if i see cmd.exe file in %comspec% shall i just assume its default and let CreateProcess handle the .bat file normally.

third and final question -- is there any value in letting the user manually specify the command shell to use when launching .bat files instead of checking %comspec%.  this would be useful for people who want to use an alternate shell not configured through %comspec%

Drag&Drop Robot / Re: Suggestion: Use Comspec
« Last post by mouser on June 06, 2008, 06:11 PM »
Just to reiterate in case there is still some confusion.  it's not a matter of me using %COMSPEC% in place of cmd.  because i never use "cmd".  The OS chooses to use cmd and the OS invokes it when i call CreateProcess.

So the solution cannot be to use %comspec% in pace of cmd in my code.  The solution could be to modify the commandline given to CreateProcess and to manually override the OS choice of command processor by explicitly passing something like CreateProcess("%COMSPEC% NORMAL_COMMANDLINE_HERE") instead of the normal CreateProcess("NORMAL_COMMANDLINE_HERE").  If that works without issue then it's a reasonable solution.  I just have to see if that works ok and doesn't break io redirection piping.

The reason that there is a bit of confusion and probably what f0dder is getting at, is the fact that i dont ever call cmd.exe explicitly.

I actually dont use shellexecute either, i usee CreateProcess because it allows me to pipe the output and capture it to be displayed in the program.

So the point is that the OS is the one deciding to launch cmd.exe to execute the .bat files.  Which is i think why f0dder was suggesting that maybe there are other places where you should configure the OS to tell windows to always launch .bat files with tcc.exe.

I could however try to either check the environment and try to launch bat files with replacement COMSPEC or allow an option of how .bat files should be launched explicitly rather than relying on OS to decide which program to use.

Question: Would you ONLY use %COMSPEC% for launching .bat files? or would you use it for ALL shelling of any executable?

PopUp Wisdom / Re: (help!) Unclickable windows

reinstall wont help.

but that's an interesting clue regarding clipboard help+spell having same issue.

what operating system are you using?

the really strange issue is the fact that it was working for you before..

i think the best thing would be for me to rebuild pop up wisdom using latest codebase and see if that doesn't solve the problem.. if not we can investigate other causes.
