Thanks very much, I can only guess at just how much effort must have gone into this painstaking piece. I'm looking forward to the next sections.

I've always been interested in VueScan but never have delved into it seriously.

You'll probably be inundated with questions before your journey is over. May I start? Can I assume that VueScan will handle scans from a sheet feeder?

I'm not a marketer and can't help you construct a working a business model.

I don't know the software market but I find it difficult to believe that there are enough business users (or even potential business users) of CD to carry the freight of your overheads. Presumably, the two of you think there are or you wouldn't raise the issue. I honestly believe that the best thing you can do is to calculate a price and charge it, and charge everybody. Unfortunately that won't stop the copies now in circulation from being passed around.

Your motives for working on CD certainly do not appear to be profit-based. If true (as I believe) the asking price could be quite modest — that, in itself, might help sales.

You cite download figures that are high, and mention the monetary need to support that traffic. I wonder how that traffic will be affected by charging for CD. I assume you have sources at least to estimate what happens when free software becomes paid software.

Others here are far better equipped to comment than I (in the mental arena I fight unarmed) and I suspect you will get some thought-provoking responses to your message.

As a gesture of goodwill, I'd be more than happy to buy a copy and I wager that others here will feel the same — it's a great community. From what you say, however, I doubt that would begin to get you where you need to be, in order to break even financially.

From what you have said, and taking a pragmatic view, it seems to me that you have only two choices.
Either charge a price for (your amended) CD that will cover your costs or close it down.

Personally, I'd favour the former, at least as an experiment. Would charging for CD really yield sufficient income to offset your costs? Can you be certain even of that?

It's irksome to find oneself embroiled in what seems a thankless task — I think many of us here have had that experience. Were it only that, the probable answer would be a change of attitude (and by that I intend no offence, simply the old 'if you can't change the circumstances, change your attitude' approach that helps keep many of us sane). Given that you are not covering your costs, however, it seems that you are faced with funding the project. In that case I'd say — speaking confidently from a base of complete ignorance — given your apparent desire to continue, go ahead and charge for it. Of course that depends on whether you're ready to withstand any license hassles that might surface; if so, full-ahead and damn the torpedoes.
